Make sure your image size is set on 7M
Look at page 15 of the manual for the self explanatory "Mode" settings, including night shots. If your shots are still to dark turn up the exposure (pg 16)

Just test the mode setting with the shot you are doing; shooting at night=night mode + high EV + high ISO
Landscape shot = landscape setting

oh, and one more thing....DON'T USE YOUR FLASH! It will kill your shots.

Kyle, I wish I could just take off and go take photos like you do.  Usually, the weather isn't too favorable for us up here this time of year. 

Yeah I did.  We didn't get any snow this year.  You guys got it all!!    It's either I'm working all the time, or it's pouring out. 

Ocean was a little erie

As the cheese said. The weather up here sucks for photography right now. Anything you look at is grey, grey and grey. Nothing but freaking grey. >:|

I'm in a photography class right now and have been using primarily OLD photos because I refuse to go out and try and shoot something that I'll like, no less the other people in class, with BS weather like this.

Ugh, I hate living in the NW simply because it's 70% crap weather and only 30% good weather. If that.

I'm still struggling with getting shutter speed and aperture to work well together. Nothing ever turns out how I see it or how I want it no matter how much I change one or both of those two particular settings.

Frustrating.

Portland Auto Show few weeks ago. There was a purdy Skyline there.






And I was down at Mt. Bachelor couple weeks ago. Only had my cell phone on me. Way better looking in person but I thought it was a purdy picture.

The Skyline shots look good, could be a little brighter and the white balance needs to be a little bit cooler. I like the shutter speed.
Even the cell pic is good!

Ok let me re-phrase..

For poor/newbie/has no cool stuff photographers....this weather sucks balls.

So Mini, can you give a quick explanation of what filters do what? I've only used a polarizer.

I can give you a quicky of the ones I use.

Red - makes sky dark and skin look flawless (in b&w)
Green - Makes sky and trees light (in b&w)
Blue - Darkens skin flaws makes sky white
Neutral Density - tricks the camera in to thinking its darker outside letting you slow down your shutter speed in sunlight/shade
Computer - allows you to do nearly every filter you can put on a camera, except neutral density.

So is the filter adding or removing the color?

In black & white the filters make some colors brighter and some darker, not removing.
In color they would change the hue of your image.

Here is an example of B&W with a dark red filter, notice the red bridge appears white and the blue sky appears black. The red filter brightens red colors while darkening colors at the opposite end of the spectrum.



Here is a shot with a green filter, the grass and trees are brought out, magentas and purples are darkened.

Kyle, 1972TLC has better options in the gloomy weather.  Since she lives in the Willamette Valley, and she don't get the rainfall that I get right on the coast.  When it's gloomy on the coast, it's usually raining pretty good. 

But I had to work early yesterday, and got off work at 1 pm.  So, we went to the beach, since the sun was out and it was very nice.






The lighting was getting better, but we had to leave, since we had a Conference with our daughters teacher. 



I found out that I need to get my sensor cleaned.  There is a spot that won't come off with the air blow.   The biggest issue with my D70, is the dust really likes the sensor, static issue.  I wish I could get a newer D series, one with the auto cleaner.

Cheese, don't underestimate the rains that happen in the valley. They suck too

I wish we could spray Static Guard in our cameras without hurting it ^_^


ps. Love the beach shots. And agree with simp that the first one needs some darkening love to the sky in PS.
