It is true that if this truck did not have low gearing then it's only choice would be to gun it. This is what the previous half-dozen FJ Cruisers did who were in front of BigMike (this was filmed at a FJ Cruiser event). They hit this short hill so hard most got their front right tire airborne requiring multiple attempts of violently spinning and slamming tires on the slope. All were sliding around and bouncing very hard. As such there was a dedicated spotter and even he said in the video that BigMike needed to backup to get more speed before being proven wrong. What people don't realize who have never driven a truck with a Marlin Crawler is that the Marlin Crawler *provides* the *option* to *try* and Crawl it.With a stock truck there is no such option: You only have High or Low so you must gun it as hard as you can and cross your fingers that you can make it without breaking. By having a Marlin Crawler, you can simply shift one gear lever and become 370% slower and then try to Crawl the obstacle using a number of gear choices all lower than stock (BigMike's first 7 gears are all lower than stock). Some objects do require momentum to get up, however our products educate and change mindsets that it is better to first take it easy and Crawl before risking any damage to your truck, persons, or environment. How else did such a deep grove form on this slope? It wasn't from trucks with Marlin Crawlers. It was from trucks flooring it bouncing around and struggling. This is why the non-profit organization Tread Lightly! (treadlightly.org) uses the famous 1980 "Crawler Truck" (with a 1,148:1 final drive / Crawl Ratio) in their marketing literature because the Marlin Crawler is an industry-leading product at trail and resource preservation. The Marlin Crawler changed the game in 1994 and our customers agree that it is the de facto reason why Toyota trucks are relevant in today's off-road world. Take away the Marlin Crawler and the Toyota truck would be like a Nissan Hardbody or Mitsubishi Montero which fewer than 1% of the USA uses for Rock Crawling. Please understand that this is a gear reduction [235:1] and not a multiplication [1:235]. In fact, we could use an engine much, much, much, much smaller than stock to achieve the same outcome. To illustrate, consider how much torque is being developed from a 2.4-liter carbureted Toyota 4cyl at a constant 800 RPM idle. We'd have the moment of inertia of the spinning flywheel plus whatever trace amount of fuel is required to maintain idle. For argument's sake, let's assume the little 4-banger is developing 10 lb-ft of torque without any throttle at idle. Now take that 10 lb-ft and multiply it by the Marlin Crawler gear ratio (in BigMike's case: 235) and the result is nearly 3 times more torque than a 2017 turbodiesel Ram 3500 HD Dually at full throttle and full boost.......and we haven't even touched the gas pedal of this lil Toyota carbureted engine. This is precisely what the Marlin Crawler enables: In a world that used to be dominated by V8-conversion Jeeps and FJ40 Land Cruisers, we can now take our lightweight, small & efficient Toyota pickup and Tacoma drivetrain and produce torque *vastly* exceeding that of any V6 or V8, normally aspirated or Supercharged/Turbocharged/NOS on the trail today. When you reduce your gear ratio with the Marlin Crawler, you increase traction (static friction is higher than kinetic friction), increase torque, increase control, while simultaneously reduce bouncing, reduce breakage, reduce trail abuse, and reduce risk. And because the Marlin Crawler can be disengaged, you retain your same city & highway driving and same fuel efficiency. Here at Marlin Crawler we truly love to Crawl and we hope it shows! Happy Crawl'n!
