Electric Locker retro-fit questions
« on: Oct 18, 2017, 03:12:49 PM »
Hey fellow wheeling fanatics, I have looked all over and cannot find a clear answer. I have installed E-lockers into the front and rear of my 86 SAS. I have heard that the axles can twist off due to not being long enough... how much longer do they need to be? This way I can buy Marlins axles then cut them to length... any info is appreciated
Your "Jeep" is only as good as the Chevy, Ford, & Dodge parts you put in it.

This is only for the rear axle. You need a housing from an 86-89 IFS truck and shafts from a 90-95 coil sprung 4runner.

Don't know. Makes no sense to pay big money for those shafts when you can get the proper length ones from a yard for cheap. Think I paid $60 for both.

From my experience, just source the right length stock shafts. It's not that they don't break but 9 years of running 4Ds on stockers I have only broken one shaft. I have also noticed that stock most of the time just chip a couple teeth so you can still keep wheeling if you wont. Chromo's seem to blow :pokinit: up when they go.

I have heard of that also,  the 90-95 4runner rear are to be a tad longer than the 86-89 ifs type rear shafts
I actually have them at home,  just never mixed em up cause the 2nd gen 4runnrs have the ebrake cable attached to the backing plates

I'm putting an E locker in the rear axle of my 85 Xtra-Cab's 87 rear axle housing next week and last night my buddy helping with the mods told me about the axle shafts I'm gonna need and this thread answered the questions I was gonna ask.
Thanks fellas, you guys are alright for a bunch of rock stars, I mean rock crawlers.

Just to show you guys that the e-lockers can be opperated with just a simple double pole double throw switch. I’ll try to post the wiring diagram later.
