Rubbing, dragging squealing noise. Help!!!
« on: Jan 29, 2017, 09:06:21 AM »
So the truck is an 89 with a solid front axle. I've had it a little over a year. For about nine months there has been a horrible grinding rubbing noise that sounds like it's coming from the driver side . The noise is only there when I'm moving . I've replaced the wheel bearings 3 different times now in that nine months. 2 time I did replace spindle drove 1 mile the sound was still there. Third time was yesterday I replaced the wheel hub this time cause there are signs of a spun race. Drove it about 5 miles this time. sound started again. When I do replace the bearings the sound is at higher speeds only after a month or two it's at all speeds. Last night I replaced the caliper on that side it was acting sticky on that side and not braking evenly . noise went away for probably 5 miles again. the sound is back but we are braking straight now and not pulling to the right. Could it be that i need to replace the pads and rotors as well?
The pads are uneven on that side from the bad caliper
am i headed in the right direction?
let me know what you think thanks for the help in advance!

Axle could be bent, knuckles may not be centered... just a couple ideas to think about before the gurus answer your question 😀

Could be. Haven't really done anything crazy to bend it. I can throw it on an alignment rack sometime this week to be sure though

Are you greasing your bearings by hand?

I would suggest tearing it down to the axle.  It might be the birfield rubbing inside the housing.

From a bent housing?? Or why would it rub?

No mention of an alignment... have you had one lately?

Being that you said it "sounds" like its coming from drivers side.. get all four off the ground and spin the wheels to find out for sure. Can even put it in 4x4 and just observe the wheels spinning and see if anything wobbles, makes noises, looks out of the ordinary, etc..
