Looking at purchasing a 84' Toyota and I am new to the Cali. emission thing. The truck is out of state which has no emission test. Supposedly the truck has a re-man motor with less than 15000 miles. Truck has a aftermarket Weber crab., some kind of high flow heads and headers. My question is how hard would it be to get the old girl to pass emissions? Would it even be worth buying out of state?
I have an '84 carbed 22r. You can't use a Weber on an '84: '85 had smog legal Weber and header avail, not '84. The cat. convertor is what ages on these motors. Also check your vacuum: should be 19 or better. Look at cleaning/replacing the EGR. Take it to a place that will run a check for free, just to see if it will pass. I went to Mike's Smog, in Indio. A very helpful technician/owner. the sensors for the air cleaner, engine temp and EGR are usually broken/missing: good luck with that!
If a smog legal Weber works on a 81-83 22r and on an 85 22r than it will work on an 84. Whats the difference? A 22r is a 22r, and a smog legal Weber is a smog legal Weber. Just hook up all the vacuum lines and everything else correctly and it will pass, as long as everything else is working correctly. The smog tech isnt going to know any different or even care.
