Title: T100 Family Wheeler. AKA the Mutant Turtle
Post by: ryantowry_81 on Nov 20, 2015, 02:15:58 PM
so this is going to be a REALLY slow build because of work and the holidays and 3 kids but i figured i would start posting pictures of the starting point and the parts as they roll in.

so this whole adventure started last January when i was cruising craigs list for toyota parts as always and i found this guy selling a t100 for parts-$500. so i called him up because he was local and he starts to tell me the rear end is blown and they quoted 3200 to fix it so he is selling it for parts. I ask if i need to bring wheels or a come-a-long with me to get it on the trailer if i come look at it and he says no, you can drive it right on in 4wd. he said at the time it had been only out of registration about 3 weeks!

so i show up to a pretty beat t100 with 366K on the clock but she fires right up and goes though the gears and drives around his yard in 4low just fine. so i give him $460 bucks and start to load up:

so it also had some excessive moisture from the tailpipe and i know these are prone to head cracks so i decided to let a friend of mine tear into it and see.

regardless i think it was a pretty good deal. I have always wanted a t100 and i have always loved the 3.4 and 5 speed combo so with some polish it should be a nice little stock driver......

That is if i could ever leave well enough alone.

so i got tired of only having two seats in my 1st gen crawler and decided it was time for a change. i origionally bought a 99 4runner to build but i have always been a truck guy so when this t100 came around i got to thinking.

i took a big step this Halloween and let the 83 go to a nice home in reno for 3K:
(https://board.marlincrawler.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi.imgur.com%2FyRWtglP.jpg&hash=ff74737678b48828ae4f166ae7f53f8d) (http://imgur.com/yRWtglP)

this left me with a budget to start collecting parts.

i am also a hoarder so i already have a FJ60 front axle with custom bobby long inner shafts and some machined spacers and IFS hubs to get it to 67.5" WMS to WMS, a full float FZJ80 rear, 5.29's for both axles, a Detroit and spartan locker for the axles, and install kits, a set of 23 spline dual cases, some 14" travel 5150's, 350 dollars in marlin gift cards and some old air bumps that need to be rebuilt.

next big step was tires.

picked these up last weekend for 1100. 37x12.5-R17 yokohama geolandar m/t's and some steel 17x9's with the toy bolt pattern, still need to measure backspace but i can work with that.

as for the name, the first toyota i ever built was a 84 extracab that was painted with green rustolium with a roller and when i wheeled in AK most guys had big blocks and boggers but the toyota always hung in there so they had nicknamed it the Turtle, figured since this is green and just bigger it could be the mutant turtle.

here is the link to that build thread:

sorry it is old so some pics have been moved.

so my friend Ray dove intot he motor and found what i had suspected, cracked head on the passenger side. luckily i have another friend that sold me a good passenger side head for 100 bucks.

luckily the compression was still good before pulling the heads so i think the bottom end is still good so we are going to install the new head and do some little maintenance items and button her back up.

now i have to build the widened front axle and setup the 3rds. Find a longer passenger side rear axle for the full float FZJ80 axle to make it 67.5" instead of the stock 63.5", from my reading the short side rear axle is 29" from end to mounting face so if i have one made at 33" and widen the housing 4" on that side i should be right around 67.5"

next i have to figure out suspension. i think i am going to run the 14" shocks i ave and some f150's or 63's for the rea and get some FOA coilovers for the front and build a homebrew 3 link.

hopefully i can find some deals on nthe parts i am still lacking on black friday/ cyber monday.

Thanks man. I am just hoping it does not take me years to build. I am hoping to get the parts collected soon and the. Get her in the garage after the holidays.

Might have to throw some build parties to do tear down and clean up. Help it move faster.

Right on man... Glad to see you stuck with the manual. Just a heads up the torsion bars can be a bit of a pain to get out on the T100's if you take them out whole. I had one adjustment bolt seize and it ended up snapping in half.

Looking good so far. Definitely following your build; love the T100's. Keep the pics coming as you go. Looking forward to seeing her when shes done. Good luck...  :usa:

yeah i had the same happen on the torsions on a 3rd gen i SASed and i just decided to torch them out. made a little pop when they finally cut but i cut them slowly so they were actually twisted some by the time they gave out.

debating if i should cut the whole front frame rail off to rebuild it or just clean it off and go from there.  I want to try and keep this truck lowish.

hoping to use the black friday deals to order my coilovers and adapter plate. thinking of going inchworm so i can clock the t case flat.

well i used black friday discount to order up my coilovers today!!!

went with 2.0-14" FOA remote resi shocks with med/firm compression and light med rebound. most reccomended med comp and light reb but i figure i  would like to try a slightly stiffer shock and lighter tender spring to be able to have a plush ride while still limiting some body roll.

I also went with 250/400 springs to assuming a 1085 sprung corner weight, mounting the coilover right over the axle and only leaned in 10  250/400 gave me a initial spring rate of 154lb/in and initial suspension frequency of 1.160. also a stepup ratio of 260% to hopefully avoid hard bottoming.  I was shootiung for 50 % droop, but we will see if i can really get that type of up travel. might need to go softer on the initial and add droop once i get to start fabbing.

luckily daves offroad has a spring exchage program so i can play with them before driving it too much and see if i need to swap.

shocks, springs, limit straps, and air bump cans came out to only 637 bucks!

now need to buy v6 adapter, rear axle shaft to center the fj80 housing and my triple shifters.

might wait on the triple stick as that is the only slush i have in the budget right now incase i need to fix something else i didnt account for. I do have bucketsw i can install instead of the bench, just dont want to.

also just ordered my v6 to gear case adapter for 318 plus shipping brought it to 338.

I went inchworm for the sole fact that it would allow me to clock the cases seeing as the doubler i have is non clockable.  i have always wanted to flat belly the truck but with triple shifters i dont want to have to redo the whole floor. clocking it should help some, only time will tell.

yeah i had seen that thread when i initially searched for info on them but the GM dealers i have talked to knew nothing about them or how to get parts. I assumed they outsourced them from another manufacturer because they look alot like Race Runners:
http://www.racereadyproducts.com/racerunner-shocks/racerunner-20-bump-stop/

I was going to try and call sway away who owns race runner and see if they can get me a seal kit.

I looked in the 2005 GM Defense LSSV Military Truck Parts Manual, and they don't show any type of rebuild kit, hopefully race ready will have kit, nice find

so bringing back the dead, i finally got some time to work on the axles for this thing this last weekend. I started working on a bucket for my tractor but soon got bored and found my self stripping my front axle to widen it. from 12AM to 6:30AM i went from full axle to fully ground down and knuckle balls off.

here is the machined spacer from LCwizard to make the custom inner shafts work. I believe they are designed to make the axle 2-5/8" wider per side. I will have to measure after i get it all back together with the shafts in to see. I also plan on adding IFS hubs for the extra 1.5" per side and doing the FROR tacoma brake kit.

so weird thing is the passenger side has this sheet metal oil dam in it and the other side did not. anyone know if this is a nessecary part or what it is called? I kinda beat the one i have left while removing the knuckle balls. makes me also wonder what happened to the other one?

not a whole lot of progress because i only had about 2 hours to work on it but i got the bevel ground on the housing and the knuckles so i could put the extensions in and the knuckles back on to see what the overall width is really looking like.
(https://board.marlincrawler.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi344.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fp357%2Fryantowry_81%2FT100%2F046_zpsxw8cgak8.jpg&hash=00bde220758d48308bffdec60f68daae) (http://s344.photobucket.com/user/ryantowry_81/media/T100/046_zpsxw8cgak8.jpg.html)
(https://board.marlincrawler.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi344.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fp357%2Fryantowry_81%2FT100%2F045_zpsvwviyup2.jpg&hash=593d951b827f6bab6c6e0d28fbe0ae9b) (http://s344.photobucket.com/user/ryantowry_81/media/T100/045_zpsvwviyup2.jpg.html)
(https://board.marlincrawler.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi344.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fp357%2Fryantowry_81%2FT100%2F044_zpstf2lh52u.jpg&hash=3a1232d700024f618d6e60317d027517) (http://s344.photobucket.com/user/ryantowry_81/media/T100/044_zpstf2lh52u.jpg.html)

so from CL of trunion axis to the other CL of trunion axis on the housing i measured approximately 54-1/4", and the strait axle knuckle and hub assemble measured roughly 5" from trunion axis to WMS. that would put me around 64-1/4". I have IFS hubs to swap on that should put me at 67-1/4" or a little more if i dive into the tacoma brake swap from FROR or similar.

looks like this axle width should be right about perfect for the T100.

just need to get it all built.  my plan is to cut off the diff cover and re install the 3rd and dry fit the knuckles, IFS hubs and axle shafts i have and make sure my measurements are correct then start cutting the rear apart to widen the FJ80 rear to match. I still need to machine the spacer for that and cut the cut to length shaft from nitro.

after i get both those figured i am going to borrow an alignment jig from a friend and get the whole assembly dialed and caster set to where i think it will be and weld everything but the knuckle so i can fine tune later for the front. Rear i will probably just leave the spring perches off for now.

not a whole lot of progress but i did finally get the t100 smoged and registered last week so she is legal for the street. this is a big milestone for me as i havent wanted to cut anything on the truck until everything is ready and i know there wont be any title issues.

so this sunday night from midnight to 4am i tore into the rear axle to get her stripped down. still alot of grinding left to do but I got the short side spindle off so i can start building the widening spacer. I am planning on taking the 63" wide stock axle to 67.5" just about stock. this means i have to build a 4.5" spacer on the short side. the short side axle shaft measured 28-15/16" so with my nitro cut to length shaft i need to cut around 33-7/16". here are some pictures:

Ive been looking for a cheap T100 myself that I can build.  It looks like a fun build!  I like those axle tube spacers that you have.  I may rethink my setup and go wider now!

Just read your axle thread, looks like we are on similar paths. Looking at your profile looks like you are near me also I live in grass valley near Rollins lake.

I have never heard anyone say they wish their axle was skinnier, especially under a top heavy fj60

Thanks bud. Hopefully I can get some time this week to machine the rear spacer and get that mocked back up and get the axles that much closer to together.

I think after that I am going to build the tcases and bumpers sliders and anything else I can do before cutting the suspension off.

I need to make a orde with Marlin to use some of my gift cards to get some mar joints for the 3 linked

Mine won't be narrower as is.  They'll be the same as the fzj80 rear with spacers up front which is still wider than oem fj60.

sorry, what i meant was skinnier than what they built not stock.  just trying to say wider is better....to a point.

on a side note i went to the dump today and the truck weight with me and half a tank of fuel was 4326 so my 175lbs and roughly 75 lbs fuel would make the truck roughly 4,075 lbs. curious to see how she sits stock.  I am hoping to work on keeping her low and light so the little 3.4 stays happy. i have been driving her quite a bit lately and i am pretty happy with the power with the 31's and 4.10's even woth 370k on the stock bottom end.

Got a little more work done monday night.

cut the diff cover off and assembled the knuckles and spindles to check the shafts spline engagement. i have to move the long side out about a 1/4". i also mocked up a quick tie rod to keep the knuckles strait. not the final configuration i dont think but makes it look more complete. I am going to throw the IFS hubs on after moving the long side out some to get a overall width measurement.

fan support bearing failed when arriving at a job walk with a client. i muscled it into the parking spot (PS went out too) and after ward removed the fan shroud and fan and limped her home from Rancho Cordova to Colfax.

Very glad the water pump is timing belt driven and not by the fan pulley like most or i would have really been stranded.

Ordered one off amazon thanks to Squadoosh's too tall thread and she has arrived today so i should be able to get her installed tonight if the rain behaves some.

not a lot done but i did get the new fan support installed so she is running again and threw on the IFS hubs i had laying under the work bench so i could get an actual width measurement.
(https://board.marlincrawler.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi.imgur.com%2FOcsaHkn.jpg&hash=8a2559ce55731ce079e01445a41f695a) (http://imgur.com/OcsaHkn)

with the IFS hubs and the stock brake rotor behind the hub i am right at 67" WMS to WMS. if i end up going to the FROR tacoma/tundra style brake setup it should add another 1/2" i would think but i think that might have to wait for a future upgrade.

I also decided to do something creative and dug into the scrap pile and made myself a little helper

so not much update right now but hopefully soon.  ordered my barnes 3 link kit with endure joints on my birthday (5/28) and have acquired an alignment jig to use to weld up the axle housings strait. also have the rear axle spacer at the machine shop now so it should be in my hands before the end of the week.  hopefully get some time to burn the axles together some and figure out the steering and pull the truck in and get to cutting!

came out pretty strait. the blue is the alignment bar inside the spindle.
(https://board.marlincrawler.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi.imgur.com%2F2H3KZMt.jpg&hash=d0d7b718658a4cba6b17b7427c604b9c) (http://imgur.com/2H3KZMt)
washed over a weld on the side I didn't cut into to straiten the axle on that side some. not the prettiest but it did recenter the alignment bar in the spindle by about 3/16"
(https://board.marlincrawler.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi.imgur.com%2FlH1qSxy.jpg&hash=06cbdbe7d1f78e4e33c6647301bf2c07) (http://imgur.com/lH1qSxy)

I also stripped the knuckles off the front axle so I can get the alignment jig in there next after I finish welding on the rear diff cover and some bracing.

not too much but considering I went out to the garage at 11pm and only worked until 12:45am it was good progress.

well I got a little bit more done over the weekend.

got the rear housing finished up with a quick strap bent over the diff cover to protect the ring gear and another strap bent across the bottom to help with diff dragging protection.
(https://board.marlincrawler.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi.imgur.com%2FM9kmMUU.jpg&hash=903281f7f05b401001189416a6f0a006) (http://imgur.com/M9kmMUU)
(https://board.marlincrawler.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi.imgur.com%2FOWDUR7M.jpg&hash=1172f4138efbd81c56975a4393ce63f7) (http://imgur.com/OWDUR7M)

I also had measured and cut the nitro cut to length shaft before welding the diff cover back on.
(https://board.marlincrawler.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi.imgur.com%2Fsc6PB7K.jpg&hash=56624513fa6b7fa1f0e96e254b217b05) (http://imgur.com/sc6PB7K)
the nitro is in the middle in that pic with the stock long side and short side on both sides. the custom short side measured out at 33.5" from mating surface to end of splines. the stock short side was 29" and the long side is 36.5". still not a perfectly centered diff but close enough for the girls I run with.

then I pulled the third and alignment jig and moved on to the front. Front turned out to be too bent to get the alignment jig through. so I came up with this:
(https://board.marlincrawler.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi.imgur.com%2FfnL72Us.jpg&hash=f192b63dda0e52a082b937975d15cf19) (http://imgur.com/fnL72Us)
used 2 20 ton jack stands and some scrap metal and a 12 ton jack to bend her back to strait then added heat via TIG welder to keep her strait once the pressure was released. I plan on adding a truss but I want to wait until all my 3 link brackets are on first and add the truss during final weld out.

also finally put my springs on the CO's and started going through my t cases to see if I need any other parts.
(https://board.marlincrawler.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi.imgur.com%2Fg6piMjz.jpg&hash=a0aa2305097dea4fc388298f5d758d9b) (http://imgur.com/g6piMjz)
swapped the 21 spline out for the 23 spline I had lying around
(https://board.marlincrawler.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi.imgur.com%2Fc1wI7B0.jpg&hash=d9e4da61da5a94b426728324b88bf14e) (http://imgur.com/c1wI7B0)
need to remove the interlock pin and buy a double or triple stick for this.
(https://board.marlincrawler.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi.imgur.com%2FSwdTaJf.jpg&hash=b6f65392d3440b9d7fd18af00a881c43) (http://imgur.com/SwdTaJf)

hopefully get the t case together next and then I should be about gathered enough to start cutting IFS off!!!! stay tuned!!!!

used 2 20 ton jack stands and some scrap metal and a 12 ton jack to bend her back to strait then added heat via TIG welder to keep her strait once the pressure was released. I plan on adding a truss but I want to wait until all my 3 link brackets are on first and add the truss during final weld out.

also finally put my springs on the CO's and started going through my t cases to see if I need any other parts.

swapped the 21 spline out for the 23 spline I had lying around

need to remove the interlock pin and buy a double or triple stick for this.

hopefully get the t case together next and then I should be about gathered enough to start cutting IFS off!!!! stay tuned!!!!

What size diameter of solid stock are you using for your front axle alignment jig?  How tight is the tolerance on the knuckle balls?

Thanks,

Burl

I think it is 1.25" but not sure. I borrowed it from a friend who built the jig and spacers for his build.  it is not a tight fit in the knuckle balls or rear axle. I would say their is about an 3/32" gap all around the bar inside the knuckle ball. I can check when I go home tonight.

I need to get a doll house finished in the garage then move the truck in to cut the suspension off and start fabbing.

well guys i have bad news for this project. looks like the T100 SAS will be put on hold indefinitely at this point. as much as i have always wanted a T100 with a SAS i have wanted this more:

it is a 73 fj40 with a freshly rebuilt TBI350, NP465, NP205, dana 60 rear and dana 44 front with uninstalled 4.88's an a rear detriot.

unfortunately the wife will not let me do both projects so i have to make some tough decisions.

yeah i know the 40 parts are more expensive but not much on mine is left fj40 besides the body. and lucky for me my boss is a fj40 geek and has a good stock pile of parts i bet i can talk him into selling to me.
