Title: 1980 Daily Driver/ Mild crawler build
Post by: OldGold3VZE on Sep 16, 2011, 10:13:46 AM
Hello, here is a quick rundown of my latest build, a 1980 4x4 Hilux. I am building this since my last project, a 1988 4Runner was supposed to be just a mild wheeler, but soon became my main crawler and now I need a DD.  I got the truck for $200 with clear title about 6 months ago, and am getting very close to having a nice daily driver that I will still be able to wheel if my runner is down.  Nothing like having a backup crawler that you can still daily drive!

When I brought it home

Fixing the classic floor rust using old body panels from the 4runner.  Even used a body mount.

(https://board.marlincrawler.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi366.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Foo109%2Fsoftcough%2FProject%2520Truck%25201980%2520Toyota%25204x4%2520LWB%2Frustyfloor2wdparts002.jpg&hash=e73f7ee8a6c71142aa75a580de8fc819)

Yes, that's liquid nails.  This is my budget seam sealer.  It holds up nice, and looks good when painted.

(https://board.marlincrawler.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi366.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Foo109%2Fsoftcough%2FProject%2520Truck%25201980%2520Toyota%25204x4%2520LWB%2Fpaintprep007.jpg&hash=b02f0179afa03de89ccec32f1bc031c4)

And here's where I'm at today, with a pretty long list still to come.

Little progress to report while I eat my lunch.  The 2wd front radiator support/body mounts are slightly different, so I have to swap the 4x4 front to the 2wd.  No biggie, just drill the spot welds and pry apart.

Also, got the Motor, tranny, and dual cases (Marlin Crawler adapter NOS from 2006) as clean as they need to be for this build.

why did you use the 2wd cab??
Title: Re: 1980 Daily Driver/ Mild crawler build
Post by: OldGold3VZE on Sep 17, 2011, 07:35:32 AM
I'm using the 2wd cab because the 4wd was lacking many key components, headliner, rear window, intact wiring harness, basically everything in the engine bay, fenders, and because I got such a good deal on it.  Also, I really wanted a real bed, and not a flat bed.  This truck is not getting the classic "bed bob".  I need a good utility truck for hauling yard waste, drywall, lumber, etc, all that home owner stuff.  Plus, I'll be left with a truly stripped down 1st gen cab to use for my next crawler project!

Here's a few shots of the 4runner that was supposed to be a quick SAS and nice daily driver.  I just hope I don't do the same thing to this truck.

(https://board.marlincrawler.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi366.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Foo109%2Fsoftcough%2F102_2898.jpg&hash=cf7e609357dad73e48796415388f1f21)

And one of my last crawler.  I used the entire drivetrain from this rig for the 4runner, except for the fresh built motor, that's in the 1980.

What a day.  Spent the morning with my GF, but was able to (almost) finish the crossmember and mounts.

(https://board.marlincrawler.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi366.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Foo109%2Fsoftcough%2FProject%2520Truck%25201980%2520Toyota%25204x4%2520LWB%2Fcrossmembercompleteaalmost003.jpg&hash=526ca73f545fd8738e3246acee03608f)

Frame mounts with oval cutout for rosette weld to the frame. I accidentally cut the oval in the actual crossmember, it will not be welded to the frame, oops.

(https://board.marlincrawler.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi366.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Foo109%2Fsoftcough%2FProject%2520Truck%25201980%2520Toyota%25204x4%2520LWB%2Fcrossmembercompleteaalmost001.jpg&hash=b947a5e3bdd1a8977df0b28f96bb2640)

I can see why these crossmembers are $300!  That was a lot of work.

Crossmember is done.  My driveshaft angle looks good from here, right around 85-86 degrees on mt sorta level gravel driveway.  Should be fine, my 4runner measures right at 86 deg. with the budbuilt.   You do what you can working out of a 1 car garage!

It took 2 full days of cutting, grinding, welding, lifting, positioning, test-fitting, and sweating to make this piece.  I can definitely appreciate BudBuilt's price now!

I need a MC forum feed back.  I don't really like winch bumpers that stick out all far off the front and, but I don't want to cut up this grill to slam the winch mount back, so I'm in a dilemma.  I just put a winch on my 4runner, and have used it a few times in pretty scarry situations, but always off road.  Since this is going to be a daily driver I'm actually contemplating not building a winch mount at all and just slamming the bumper to the front and call it good.  What do you think?

What about incorporating a hitch receiver into it so you can have a removable winch. Then you can keep the bumper tight, and still have an option for a winch.

X2!  Im all for a tight bumper.  I planned mine tight with a winch in mind.  But I didn't measure for one so if I got a winch I might have to trim to fit.  But a hitch receiver is a good idea all around.

I had a friend with the hitch mounted winch, and it was OK, but then you have to carry it around, it always banged around in his runner, it took up cargo space (important on a dd), and if he ever flopped I'm sure it could have killed a passenger.  This just might be a no winch truck.  At least I got the mount all finished up, either way.

If anyone is wondering. that piece of rectangle is 1.5" x 2.5" 3/16th wall.  Fits the 1980 frame perfectly, and available at my local metal yard.

My buddy had a piece of square tube in the bed that the winch mounted to when not in use, and it doubled as a hi-lift mount. I believe he coated the inside of it with plastidip so it didn't rattle.   From what I got the 4runner is your more designated wheeler, so do you really think your gonna need a winch?

Well, I was originally just gonna bead it up on the welds, but then things got a little too crazy and I ended us smearing it on all the new sheet metal I welded in.  It's just thick enough to give a little bit of a protective barrier, it is paintable, grindable, and literally tough as nails.  I sealed the rear of my 4runner with it after the chop and it's going strong almost a year later, not paint flaking or cracking.  And at $3 a tube it's hard to beat.  I coated the underside, too.  Once I get my vinyl flooring installed it will be like the floors never rusted at all.

winch mount in the bed is the way to go and you can drill a hole in the tube so you can put in a locking pin and it wont fall out if you flop it and it wont grow legs in the middle of the night.

Put the bed on to get an idea for my sliders and rear bumper design.  Time to bend some tube!

I will be keeping the lower bed skirt, or vlance, or whatever it's called.

(https://board.marlincrawler.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi366.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Foo109%2Fsoftcough%2FProject%2520Truck%25201980%2520Toyota%25204x4%2520LWB%2Fbedison003.jpg&hash=3cb1b9c9e16c8cba09bd09f307f0b598)

Also, just as a side note, those are stock rear springs with a 6" shackle.  I'd like to find a set of the 3rd gen 51" springs to get that shackle angle a little slacker, but it's not necessary for this build to have lots of flex, just good ride quality.

Found more rust in the floor, ugggh.  At least it was in a place that required a thick plate for strength (seat and seat belt mount) and it was pretty easy to fix.

Also, got the other slider on.  They are not 100% symetrical, but I can blame that on the yellow yacket sting ;)

Haha, no, keeping this one Marlin red.  I got stung literally right after you pulled out on Friday.  Your back tires might have still been on my driveway.  I'm all good now.  Found the nest and sprayed it good.  Also, got the steering box mounted.  I forgot how much I hate doing those.  At least the radiator support is still removable.  Shock hoops, a rear bumper and this thing can almost be called a truck again!

(https://board.marlincrawler.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi366.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Foo109%2Fsoftcough%2FProject%2520Truck%25201980%2520Toyota%25204x4%2520LWB%2Fsteering001.jpg&hash=76fec3f1f1ba5960a2a1546a8926677f)

Plenty of drag link to tie rod clearance, and I didn't even have to cut out the radiator support.  Definitely didn't need the flat pitman arm, oh well/

Those are the best I could get with my decade old digital camera and poor lighting.  They are 70" long (both main pieces), the bends are 38 degrees, the angle cut to join the 2 is 52 degrees, and the inner supports are 1.5 x 3 3/16 cut to 2.75 on the inside of the radius.  The rear 2 legs to the frame are 6" from the frame mount to the inside of the radius, and for the front mounts, where the frame tapers inward I just took a 1 foot piece of my 1.5 x 3", cut my radius, and held it up to the frame to mark the angle, never measured it.  There is about 5/8" gap to the door when opened.  I wanted there to be a decent gap in case this becomes a true dedicated wheeler and they get bent up, plus my girlfriend requested "steps" for this truck.  The kickout is just under 30 degrees.  All frame legs have 90 degree gussets.

Thanks for the continued motivation!

So, I'm not too stoked on my steering mount.  I don't think the flat pitman arm was a good choice, especially considering I didn't need one on my 88 runner (IFS Frame) and the clearance there is great, so I might cut out that section of frame and add in a totally new piece with the steering way up and out of the way.  Currently, and this is mostly weighted, still need fenders, hood, and bumper, I'm at 2.75" from my sector shaft to my spring pack.  I'm shooting for 5" uptravel, and am wondering if the shaft is going to hit my springs.  Any thoughts?  My runner is also at 2.75", but only has 3" uptravel, and is fully weighted with a winch.

Update...

I hooked up my cherry picker and did some garage flexing.  I know this isn't the most accurate, but I flexed the truck until I was not comfortable anymore.  After seeing the results I am not worried about the steering box location.  I went from 2.75" to 1.5" from the sector shaft nut to the spring pack, and could not get the springs to flatten out any more.  Also, if I hold a straight edge from the front spring mount to where the rear shackle would be with the springs fully flattened out there is still about 1/4" clearance.  Close, but should be fine.  Only a real trail test will give me my answer, but that is just going to have to wait.  Shitty night time pics.  P.S.  I really like the rear stuff.

Working on bump stops.  The steering is a complete non-issue, not really sure why I tweaked so hard on that.  I took the front axle out, and reduced the spring pack down to just the 2 mains to see where maximum bump would be.  Apparently, these bump stops compress a lot, so I accounted for 1.5" of squish.

(https://board.marlincrawler.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi366.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Foo109%2Fsoftcough%2FProject%2520Truck%25201980%2520Toyota%25204x4%2520LWB%2Fbumps005.jpg&hash=bf55bf8cf0b6e7bd78b663c6ea2b2fa4)

The springs hit the frame when they're flat.  Not quite sure if this is gonna be a problem or not.

Here is the front end all together again.  I've got just under 3" from bump to pad, and I think this will settle .5-1" once I get the front end all together, and maybe add a winch.

My 4runner has been making some awful noises from the rear axle.  I was thinking Pinion gear.  Pulled it and had multiple broken ring gear teeth.  This will hold up the 1980 for a while since the 4runner is my current daily driver, and I have to keep it going.  More to come as soon as I fix the runner.

Stinger mount.  It'll be like one big shock hoop.  I've done it on other builds with good results.  This one is just a little beefier (see earlier pics).

Rear shock mounted...

Had to go high with the upper mount, and low with the lower mount in order not to cut the bed.  5.5" up, and 6.5" down travel.

I think I'm going to try and get my bumpers built this week or next weekend, then I can get ready for paint and dialing in the interior.

Just finished adjusting the valving in my shocks and adding some sweet bump stops to the 5/8" shafts.  30/70 for the rears, and 40/90 for the fronts.  We'll have to see how that works out.  Looking like mild weather this weekend, so some paint action might be in order.

Got started on body work and paint.  Also, build a really basic push bar for the front so that I could mount the stock chrome front bumper to give this a stock/mod look.  I'll build a beefier front bumper when I buy a winch, which might be a while.

(https://board.marlincrawler.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi366.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Foo109%2Fsoftcough%2FProject%2520Truck%25201980%2520Toyota%25204x4%2520LWB%2F102_3515.jpg&hash=beca337ecdb6a160c614850220dc48d3)

to this...

Decided to go 2 tone with the paint, that makes touch ups easy.

Carpet pad glued down and vinyl floor cut to fit.

This is my first 1st gen.  I'm 6'2", so if this ends up being too tight for a daily driver then I'll just have a really nice platform for my next dedicated crawler I guess.  It's been a fun build, for sure, and is nearing completion.

Specs on the engine are pretty straightforward, just forgot to post em yet.

-1984 22r
-Master rebuild kit from Engn Bldr
-.040" pistons
-261 RV Crawler cam
-Complete head rebuild with new exhaust valves, oddly the intake valves were fine
-Weber 32/36 with K&N high flow filter
-MSD 6A ignition box and Blaster coil
-Trail Gear Bomb Proof motor mounts
-New OEM Aisin clutch
-High flow exhaust with some kind of big muffler that the muffler shop hooked me up with, I think it's for a V-8, but sounds good on the little 22r

I built this engine 2 years ago for my old truggy, but only put 1000 miles on it, so it's still like new.  Can't wait to hear it run again!  Pretty sure I'm in that 140 BHP range, though I've never had it dyno tested.  Also, I have the stock 1980 20r head with provisions for power steering, so in my down time I might port and polish that, build it with oversized SS valves, and put it on.

Few Updates, finished the 2 tone paint on the bed, and got it mounted, installed tail lights, tail gate, and rear window.  Also, started to wire up the MSD, but need a longer cable from my coil pack to the distributor.

Got the brakes almost done, just have to hook up some lines and bleed them.  Upgraded to the 1" bore master cylinder, new front calipers, cruiser rotors that I had, just got them turned, and new shoes and cylinders out back.  Stainless lines all around.  Also, while I was in the hydraulics mood I replaced the clutch slave and got the lines all hooked up.  Also, installed a new radiator and all hoses.

The Weber carburetor inlet is a metric 10 x 1.00 thread pitch, not a 1/8" NPT, so I bought an NPT adapter fitting with 1/8 on one side and 5/16" on the other, turned the 5/16 down to 10mm and ran a die on it to make a custom adapter.  This is  Holly 1-4 psi regulator.  The round ones from the regular parts store will give you nothing but headaches, trust me.  Also, not I have a chrome gauge, and that's always cool!

Went DH mountain biking at Lefthand Canyon today.  This is by far the best riding and most powerful Toyota that I've ever built.  I was pulling hills harder than my 2 friends in their Tacomas with 3.4s.

Nice truck and even better video dude! So You work for PUSH Industries or what? What did the Push re-valving do for you over the stock valving of those Fox shocks?

Thanks, and yes, I am a technician at PUSH.  We have never officially tuned truck shocks, but they are actually simpler internally than a mountain bike shock damper.  All I did was install what I thought would be a good starting point for the compression and rebound shim stacks.  Also, I installed some of out shaft bumpers and they seem to be working really nice.  I have some ideas for the valving that I want to try now that I have had a chance to get some miles on the truck both on and off road.  It's very nice being able to combine both of my hobbies and work all together!

Nice! Keep me updated if you find that a different re-valving feels better than your current setup... cause im looking to buy some of those 2.0's myself, and i might have to hit you up to re-valve mine eventually . Wish you lived closer too so we could ride together because i'm about to buy a 2012 Scott Genius LT and i need some friends to bomb the mountain with you know!

For me mountain biking and wheeling pretty much go hand in hand.  If you end up getting the 2.0 shocks I would recommend getting them from Offroad Warehouse.  The price is great, and they will hook you up with tuning shims, too.  These shocks are very easy to valve at home, it's just way nicer when you have the "correct" jaws and such for holding everything.  Enjoy that new bike!

Hey OldGold3VZE, Do you have the part numbers for both the 14 inch and 12 inch Fox shox you are using? I'm about to place my order and want to make sure they are the right ones! Thanks!

These are the numbers im currently looking at:

12"-FOX 980-02-027-A

14"- FOX 980-02-090-A

Does that sound right?

Yep, those are the same dampers I installed on this build.  Valving is Fox's 40/90 front and 30/70 rear.  I have been pretty happy with this so far, but I have some "out of the box" shim stack ideas that I want to try before too long.  The fronts are a very tight fit to the brake master cylinder with my 1.75" tubing bent on a 5.5" CLR die, so you might consider the 12" models at all 4 corners, or possibly even a 10" for the rear depending on your application, and weather or not you want to cut up your floor.  Let me know if you have any questions on taking them apart and changing the valving, it's pretty easy.

Nice! With that said i just might go with 12 inch'rs all the way around. The plan right now is RUF and F-150 springs in the rear, however i do want to keep it as low as possible. So you think the 12" Fox's are longer than the 12" Bilsteins?
Title: Re: 1980 Daily Driver/ Mild crawler build
Post by: OldGold3VZE on Jan 26, 2012, 06:51:06 AM
Yes, longer, although I thought it was a bigger difference.  On my 4runner I have 5100s on the rear, and 5150s on the front, both 12", both measure 16" from the end on the body to the top-eye mount.  The Fox 12" 2.0s measure 17.25", so only an inch and a quarter longer.  I have always had good luck with 12" travel shocks for RUF spring packs, but I just wanted that extra wiggle room on this truck, namely in the up-travel depot for a little more high speed fun.  You definitely don't want to slam your dampers going 30 through a water bar!   And 12" is plenty for 63s or F-150s.

Little update.  The truck has been doing pretty good.  Suspension is good, brakes, heat, steering, all fine.  What has been bring the suck has been my fuel delivery.  Even after upgrading my fuel pressure regulator, I'm still having issues with the engine randomly stalling out on me, middle of the road, full throttle, even sometimes just at idle.  Plus, I failed emissions twice, both due to high HC at idle.  Everything else was good to go.  I'm done with carburetors and gasoline.  Gotpropane is scheduled to be here on Wednesday or Thursday.  I'll have an install here soon.

Full and ready to go.

Getting ready for the Gotpropane kit to show up, should be here in another 2-3 days.  Pulled all the gasoline equipment off.  This was pretty simple, since I had already de-smoged the truck when I installed the Weber.  I did have to source a stock carburetor, and It's a good thing I had a whole 22r to steal parts off, cause when I switched to the Weber I lost the stock hardware, plastic carb spacer, and carb itself, plus, I've moved since then so who knows where that stuff is now.  I felt kinda bad, the stock carb had obviously been recently rebuilt, all the gaskets were perfect, and the inside was clean as a whistle.  Oh well, it's for the greater good!

For reference, her are the tanks standing up in the bed.  Not where they will go.

(https://board.marlincrawler.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi366.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Foo109%2Fsoftcough%2FProject%2520Truck%25201980%2520Toyota%25204x4%2520LWB%2Fremovingcarb008.jpg&hash=905c8b5ae9186f2483efe4e5873d5b39)

Weber carb, Holley regulator, fuel tank, pump, lines and filters all gone, and for sale!

I'm really thinking hard about building a totally spare parts "woods buggy" out of all the stuff I have laying around.  Seriously, rear engine with a Weber (more likely to run better up and down hill due to being flipped around), single case, welded 4.10 gears, home brew hydro steering, leaf springs, whatever is laying around.   Just scored some really beat 36" swampers that would be great!

Yeah, I can't wait.  I'm really torn on how I want to mount my tanks.  My local fill station said that if the tanks are permanently mounted in the bed with the filler facing out the side they could fill them without having to be removed, so that's the way I'm going to mount them to start.  $2.69 per gallon, and has been for over a year.  I hope it stays that price.

Post by: OldGold3VZE on Feb 28, 2012, 06:39:00 AM
I've got one of those Tractor Supply type places just around the corner from my house, and they fill tanks at that price, but I'm trying to get a 500 gallon tank installed at my house for doing my own fills.  The local propane company is being hard though since you have to be trained on how to use a wet leg filler.   If it works out I'll have my own filling station, and bulk price is right at $2.00 a gallon.

Check this out.  Kit showed up a day earlier then expected.  Glad I got it all torn down last night.  Should have a youtube video of it running in a few hours if all goes well.  The kit is really nice, everything is there, and Cary even wrote on the mixer OK next to the mixture screw, and he added arrows as to show where to apply silicone, pretty nice personal touch.  All his kits are tested with a wide band O2 sensor before leaving his shop to ensure proper function.  This is why you go with GotPropane.com over the other guys.  Great products, and great support.  Plus, USA based company!!

I am a little anal about these type of installs, and way over thought my vaporizer mount before realizing how dumb it was and starting over with a very simple, clean, strong piece of angle cut to the contour of my shock hoop.  This worked really well due to the height of my hoops.  Should have the water lines and tank mounted tomorrow.

Mixer, adapter, throttle body...

Another late night, but I got it all done.  Runs like a top, and I haven't even properly set it up yet, which I guess is pretty much just timing?  Seems real simple.  I have to get a longer idle speed screw, and hook up the vacuum advance, but I'm back on the road.  Emissions test report to come.

I decided the tool box was pretty crucial, so this is where the tanks will be for now.  I have to get another mount kit for the 2nd tank, but it will go right behind this one.

(https://board.marlincrawler.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi366.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Foo109%2Fsoftcough%2FProject%2520Truck%25201980%2520Toyota%25204x4%2520LWB%2FPropanealldone008.jpg&hash=cd0d0865d7cfe4e8539e76236484dc23)

Here is a shot from under the bed.  This is the bulk head and hydrostatic relief valve.  I hope it never needs to go off.

Absolutely loving the LPG!!!  It's not even that much of a hassle to get my bottles refilled, and I asked out the cutie at the ranching store where I have been getting the tanks filled and that has been working out, too.  She's even going wheeling with me and my buddies tomorrow!  I added a 2nd tank bracket, and am getting right at 15 mpg.  That was with old plugs and wires, which I just switched out for some new NGKs all around.  My mountain bike even still fits in the bed standing upright.  Here are some cheesy pics.

So it turns out a truck on bald 34s can't hang with built rigs on 38s.  This happened on a gnarly rocky hill climb.  Almost made it, was just getting through the last tough spot.  Banged up my axles a little, too, but nothing to worry about.  Worst part was getting turned around on the hill side.  Oh well, I needed another project.

Mother in Law hill.  There are 2 decent rocks that are a bit of a challenge with 114" wheelbase and 32" tires.  This truck needs to stay on the easy part of the trail.  I have the 4Runner for the fun stuff, just need to get it put back together.

The height from the base of the throttle body to the top of the mixer, including adapter is about 6.75"-7", and the filter just barely sits above the top of the mixer, but that could be relocated with a hose if need be.

Swapped in a stock driveshaft from my 4runner since this truck does not need .250" wall shaft, and am building a shaft for the 4runner now.

I want more power out of this thing, and I plan on achieving that with alloy wheels and smaller, probably 31" tires, and a 20r hybrid engine.  I think I can get into the 160 hp range pretty easily considering everything else that's been done to the engine.  Maybe not quite that high with the propane, but I should feel more power.  A turbo was my other option, but I think the 20/22r hybrid should give me some noticeable power and not cost too much to build.

Had this tach sitting around for a while, so I installed it.  I have been shifting off of how the truck vibrated due to polly motor mounts, and I think I have been shifting a bit early, and loosing power.  The tach is all scraped up looking because I tried installing it in another gauge cluster, and had to grind it down to fit.

Yeah, I know, I just have very limited gear setup knowledge, and already need to set up a 5.29 on my 4runner.  31s are in the works either way.

Rear springs at all 4 corners, 6 pack in the front using the mains from a 1st gen 4x4, rears are stock rears from 1st gen with 6" shackles.

Really nice build up.  :clap2:

Thanks

Really worn out 34 x 10.50 r17.  I'll be taking a leaf out of the front pack to level it out, and switching to 31" all terrains, though.  It's a DD.

Nice, I cant wait to see it with the 31's im wanting to lift my truck but dont wanna go any bigger than 33s but i wouldnt mind even just keeping 31s on it! I cant decide whether to go full all pro SAS kit, or get the trail gear SAS kit (only because you can get the HD springs from them and my truck we be used for my hunting rig/DD/ Weekend trail rig not much rock crawling stuff) or go RUF's with f-150 in the rear. Or i like your idea with rears all the way around. I just cant decide!!

Rears are great to work with at all 4 corners.  Less axle wrap then the chevy 63s, or F-150s, and if you use the later model (89-95) then they are longer then the early model stuff, giving a better shackle angle.   The springs that come in all the kits seem to yield pretty big lift, which is not what I wanted with this build.

Took  me a few days to find time, but here are some pics of my front springs after a few months and a few wheeling trips.  The main leaves (the ones with the eyelets and wraps) are from a 1st gen 4x4, along with the first non-wrapped leaf, then the other 3 are just random stock rear leaves from my 88 4runner.  I also made some easy anti-splay straps that still allow for plenty of down-travel.  Welded em right to the leaves.

A friend from work just moved into a new house that is on 7.5 acres in the mountains, and has a 4 mile washboard road to get to while climbing 2,000 ft.  Needless to say, I have already made my first shock valving changes and I am anxious to get back up there for some high speed chatter bump testing.  I'll post up the results here in a bit.

Current compression valving is basically the same stack that I had in there, only I separated the main pyramid stack (high speed) from the piston face with a .950" x .010" separator shim and a 1.620" x .008" face shim.  This type of stack should give much improved small/chatter bump performance, while still maintaining a firm, controlled ride.  As for gas, they were both right at 175psi on my 300 psi mountain bike shock pump.  Lower than I thought they were at, but I ended up sticking with this pressure, trying to only change 1 thing at a time for a more accurate evaluation of the changes I'm trying.  This is just the 1st attempt at some different valving ideas I've been reading about lately.   I'm pretty sure these dampers will be coming apart all summer.

Well, the front damper re-valve yielded such good results I now have to address the rear end.  I thought I would be OK with the stock springs, but they are really rough riding, and sag a lot.  Plus, I've wanted to link the rear of my 4runner, so I pulled the Chevy 63s from the runner, and will be installing them under the red truck tomorrow.

(https://board.marlincrawler.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi366.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Foo109%2Fsoftcough%2FProject%2520Truck%25201980%2520Toyota%25204x4%2520LWB%2Frearsuspension003.jpg&hash=b6a69d0b2b99eb12c0b0aa9326b33c7d)

Also, here is how I installed the front dampers after charging them with 175 psi.  Strap em down!

Yep, that's what I was shooting for.  I'm trying to add a little pre runner style into this one.  I'm resisting putting a cage in it cause once that happens it'll just become another beat up crawler.

Springs all painted and 3.5" square tube for hangers.

Got the springs all mounted up last night.  Need a slightly longer drive shaft now.  It was borderline before anyway.  I went 11" forward on the front mounts and 3" back on the shackle mount.  Shackles are at about 47 degrees with basically no weight, so that might be a little on the slack side, but I wanted to keep the truck low since it is only going to see 33" tires.  I also think I need some 10" dampers instead of the 12" ones that I put on the truck since I only have 3" of shaft showing.  Oh well.  Rides real nice.

Thanks man, yeah these are the same springs that I have installed on every rock crawler I've ever built.  I actually go 59.5"-60" and run a longer shackle.  It keeps the springs soft and really flexy, and I off set that with stiffer shock valving and good bump stops.  I don't carry much weight, and I like the soft ride.  Springs are all done, just need to cut my shackles, currently running an old set of 6" shackles.

nice DD!!  on the paint if you wanted to even out the texture just use a 2000grit wet sandpaper and sand it by hand no block. just keep sanding it till it looks flat then buff at slow rpm so u don't burn through. This wont  remove all the peal but it will make it look even kinda like factory paint.

The shaft bump stops I added are intended to compress as pictured.  I might move the cone shaped bump stop pads up, but probably not since they actually do engage on straight (think pot hole) style hits.

Thanks guys!  Here are some test fir pics, and a shot of my door release, a piece of 550 cord with a rubber grommet.  Simple, and best part, NO RATTLES!!!

nice i am thinking about making some doors for the summer

Go for it!  This is a project that I never thought I'd get into, but now that the hard part is done, I would definitely do another set.  18 gauge sheet metal, and a plasma cutter and welder are about all you need, oh and  grinder with some flap wheels.  I can't believe how much lighter they are vs. a fully dressed door.  And my doors didn't even have speakers in them!  I left the frame so that I can add a snap in window down the road if I feel like some weather protection is in order.

Yes, it uses the lever that would normally attach to the inside door release handle.

Thanks everyone.  I wheeled Kelly Flats outside of Ft. Collins yesterday.  It's pretty funny wheeling a truck on bald 34s in the rain with an open rear diff, but I was able to make it through the trail with no real issues.   I have to admit, I used to think that half doors were just for looks, but the extra visibility was really nice.  Kinda reminded me of being in my runner with no doors, except I didn't get all the mud spray.  Was about to take some pics, but forgot to put my memory card in the camera, oops!

Wheeled this truck again.  Took it through the rock quarry at Moody Hill, even though this is one section of trail I had sworn to avoid in this truck.  I shouldn't have 2nd guessed myself, the long wheel base and weight of camping gear allowed it to climb right through the rocks with ease, even with the open rear end.

I only carry loop end straps, no hooks, and prefer to just loop them through themselves around the tube, so no weld on recovery points are required.  I'll probably throw a 2" receiver on the front for a removable winch later down the road.

Bender is a JD Squared model 3 with a 1.75" tube die, 5.5" CLR that can bend well past 180 deg.  I'll get some more pics tomorrow.

Matt, We're meeting at the Estes Park visitor center at 10:30, or the trail hear @10:45.

More pics to come...

Nice build!  Couple of questions - not sure if you answered this already or not but how did you like the propane conversion? any loss of power?
Also I'm assuming that you just had PUSH stickers laying around and PUSH didn't actually re-valve your shocks? I have a Pivot 5.7 that PUSH did the rear fox on.

Love the propane.  Mileage is what you'd expect from a crawler, around 15 per gallon, but a gallon of LPG costs me only $2.69.  I have the same capacity as my gas tank, 16 gallons.  Power loss is not noticeable if it's there, this truck rips!  The motor is built, though.  Glad you like your shock from PUSH.  Matt next to me would have been the tech who tuned that for you.  I build all the Fox air shocks, and yes, those shocks on my truck have some PUSH love inside.  They are currently the only truck shocks we've worked on.

Thanks for all the feed back.  If all goes right, this truck will see some Moab action in a month.

Yeah, I know it's a pretty unrealistic number.  Jut figured I'd see if anyone out there was interested.  Looks like I'll be keeping it.  I just have very little extra cash after mortgage, bills, etc, so no new projects any time soon.   At least camping and a bottle of whiskey is pretty cheap.

Cool, thanks for the heads up.  I've got to source a long range propane tanks if I'm gonna start wheeling this truck longer distances, otherwise I'm gonna look like a fork lift tank sales man carrying a truck bed full of fork lift tanks.  Also, I'm going to Moab 2nd week of Sept, so we'll see.  I'll be getting a ride there on a trailer.

That's one of my favorite tire sizes.   Especially for trucks like yours and mine.  You can run every trail on the front range with those.  You should try and find an IFS rear axle, wider and bigger brakes, and then widen your front with some IFS hubs and cruiser rotors and calipers.  I can help with that swap if you want to tackle it.

Well, I had so much fun wheeling this truck this summer that I have decided to give it some upgrades.

Hydro assist
5.29 gears
A rear Aussie locker
Cage
(Might) Bob the bed

I put my worn 38s on cause they can still get me by. Still have to trim fenders.

Oh and kick ass first gen!

I've seen the Ranger, but never met its owner. He works at a different location, but I'm trying to get to know everyone there. I've only been there since Sept.  Thanks for the props on my build. If all goes well it should be pretty set for another season on the trails.

No way. Been running em like this for years on my other rig and a buddies with no issues. It's seriously the cleanest way to mount a ram to the axle. Grade 8 for the win. Remember, tie rod ends are single shear.

I personally wouldn't run that propane tank in my truck.  You'd be better off using it as a refilling station for your other tanks.  It's easy to do, without a pump, just takes a little longer.  There's a reason our rigs works so well offroad, the light weight of our rigs.

And I'd use that for one hell of a BBQ!!

Being able to get to trails outside of my current 100 mile radius is really important. Plus, I don't have to fill it all the way.  LPG weighs 4.1 pounds per gallon, so it's lighter than gas anyway.

:twocents: you could be a fill station out on the trail. for other guys charge top coin.....

build it on a trailer so you can refill as you drive if you need and then just leave it at camp while you wheel

Is that tank originally meant to be mounted in a rig? Cause the forklift ones, aren't DOT rated, they are designed to take a beating.  Just don't want to end up with a crack of BOOM!!  Better safe than sorry!!

Yes, this is a DOT motorfuel tank. It's only intended purpose is for automotive applications. And propane tanks are extremely safe. Thanks for showing concern, though.

Finally broke down and added a winch mount. It goes in the receiver and I welded a nut on the underside of the receiver so I can tighten it down.

that trucks looking good. does the back of the cage just run down to the frame rails? iv been thinking about building a cage like that on my 80. i dont think running a standard exo on the street would go over well.
Title: Re: 1980 Daily Driver/ Mild crawler build
Post by: OldGold3VZE on Oct 14, 2013, 11:45:47 AM
Yes, it runs down to the frame about center of the wheel well. The middle bar runs down to my slider, and the front bar runs to the fender bar. I'm now sure why an exo cage would be illegal? I just didn't want to have a bunch of bars running on the outside of my truck.  I mean, it's just a ladder rack, right?

Did you make the four link brackets and "truss" or did you get them somewhere?

I made everything except the axle truss. That is from ruffstuff, but it's a weld it yourself item. Pretty nice for under $60.

Nice work.  What kind of welder/setup do you use?  Ruffstuff has some killer deals.

It's a Hobart handler 180. And I have an everlast 50 amp plasma cutter. Oh yeah, and the most important, chop saw and angle grinder.

We do in Oregon!!  http://www.oregon.gov/ODOT/DMV/pages/vehicle/plateregular.aspx#special  Just have to tell them its a race car.  Or even classics are approved, and just has to be a minimum of 25 years old and once you get the plate, you never have to renew them!!   Aunt did this with for my uncles 64 Mustang.  Also, MrStubs on here, or used to, has them on his crawler.
