RAT-BED Yoter. Barnwood flatbed...
« on: Nov 09, 2015, 03:05:30 PM »
Not really a build, but the bed on my trusty 1st gen is getting so HAMMERED, it takes two people and tools to shut the tail gate, I'm out of decent tail lights and my wife cut her foot on it the other day.

Way back when in the mid-90s, before everything got all big, before the tube beds, we made about a half dozen of these wood flatbeds laced together with angle iron and bolted together like old buck boards.  They work really well.  We bonked them off rocks, pivoted off trees, used them to drive on as makeshift bridges, they survived multiple roll overs, etc.  We learned a few little nuances to make them more useful for loading and hauling things.  They were vastly superior for hauling everything from camp to firewood.  The best part is you have the ability to really strap things down hard, no yard sales.  Simple and versatile, they made our Toyotas into little trucks you can use as a truck.

Everyone thought we were crazy, then a few years later every Toyota goon in the area and beyond were running some sort of flatbed.

I have all this salvaged barn wood type junk laying around left over from the house, so I thought I would make one in the old style for my '80.  It will not be in the typical new bobbed style, not cool tubing, just a full length usable flat bed with a rat rod flare all in patina.

The best part is that this thing will cost nor more than the fasteners and a bit of channel iron.  So far the carriage bolts by weight at the farm supply store were about $22.

Here is the junk:

So you all don't think I'm totally nuts, here's the start of the bed.  Deck boards are from a shed a neighbor needed torn down that was made from pieces of a 70 year old grainery.  This is their third use, I think.

I am all for an original bed on a toyota pickup. At the same time I also like seeing a farm truck being used as exactly that. A friend has a 1st gen lb with an 8' flat bed with wood floor and stake pockets he build wood rails for. When we would go on dog drives, he would have about 4 ice boxes, a dog box, and still have room for standers to hop on for a ride. I've seen his truck loaded with bags of seed, hay, fire wood, cinder blocks... very useful! I can't wait to see how yours is constructed.

I'll be dinking with it probably as soon as deer season is over at the end of the month.
