Better gearbox anyway, it'll be fine.

It is a much better gearbox. I got the housings separated and spun everything in each gear and I cant feel anything wrong, so I guess I'm doing to a full rebuild. It'll be better off that way anyways. The oil looked very clean.

Nate are You sure itís a transmission concern?
I reread the description You wrote and thereís not really enough information to eliminate other possibilities.
Could it be the rear diff or t-case?

Noise was definitely coming from the transmission. I started doubting it too this morning but I know the noise was a bearing and was coming from the gearbox. It wasnít doing it in neutral or on coasting so Iím pretty sure it wasnít the diff. Also the noise was coming from too far forward to be the t-case. I appreciate your insights though.

My blown up diff didn't make noise in neutral or coast either.

I believe itís the countershaft bearing at the intermediate plate. I just canít see it until itís completly taken apart.

So like I said. ďItís probably the transfer case or the difĒ.  :slap:
Zippo got the transmission torn apart and saw nothing wrong with it. So itís getting an unnecessary rebuild. At least it wonít be a source of concern and will be a great transmission for whoever buys it after it gets pulled out for the eventual motor swap.  :shhh:

Noises in My limited experience are by far one of the most difficult things to diagnose.
I have been to war with more noises than I can count.

Zippo got the transmission done. He had to get a thicker snap ring for the output bearing. I've been meaning to go out and pull the rear diff out but with the rain everyday I just haven't felt inspired to do it after work. I need to channel "H8PVMNT".

I've rebuilt a few of these trannys, and when they really make noise, which isn't often, they REALLY make a Fuss and you Know they're Bad. I was thinking diffs as well, but could be transfer bearing. I'd check diffs first, though. Just my 2 cents, for what thats worth, better luck.

Had a good break in the weather today and pulled the diff.
upon initial inspection it looks fine. No odd scoring on the tooth faces and the bearings feel smooth.
wind storm coming tomorrow so I'll pull the T-case apart then so I can be under the shelter of my shed roof.

Don't forget to spin those axle bearings to see if the noise is coming from there.  :turtle:

When my rear axle bearings went on my 4Runner I almost had it towed home because it sounded so bad. Metal grinding. Ironically, I blamed the roughness on my new tires and it was soon after you rode in it.

Well Its definitely not the rear diff or the rear axle bearings. They are in excellent shape. I drove over to Zippos place this morning and picked up the transmission and some wheel bearings and front hub seal kits he had bought for it awhile ago. I might as well put them on and see if that was the problem. If the noise wasn't coming from the transmission it would make sense that it could've been coming from the passenger wheel bearing according to the vector of the noise. Before I dig into the front axle though I need to finish getting the transmission and T-case cleaned up and re-assembled so I can free up my cleaning station.

You mean inside the axle housing. What kind of varmints do you have over there that can chew through 3/16Ē steel. Yikes.  :yikes:
