83 3rz / matching boat
« on: May 28, 2015, 10:00:08 AM »
Hey to everyone and a big thank you to all of you that have put up the great info on all the informative threads. I have a few rigs, built quite a few for myself and with friends for them. This one will be my daily driver.
Started with an 83 2wd auto longbed, enjoyed it for a few months and built a new 22r for it. Ran it for another year or so and had a flat tire. That led to the sas. Left it 2wd auto until the time was right to finish it. But the head gasket let loose on me 3 years ago and it has been sitting  ever since.

Funny how a flat tire leads to SAS.  Years back a twisted driveline lead to a 4 link rear for me.  Sometimes just need a reason.  Any will do.

Yeah I agree. It was either $80 for a 225/50-15 tire or $150 for a spring hanger and shackles. So I went that route.

Ended up with a totalled 96 taco for a fair price and got all the goods needed from it. Unfortunately it was an auto, but our club is primarily toyota and a few of us having tacos for daily drivers rounding up a w59 bellhousing wasn't too hard. Taco had been sitting for over 6 years that I know of maybe longer. So since Feb when I got it home its cylinders had been soaking in marvel mystery oil just to be on the safe side. A few weeks ago pumped it all out and got it running. Got a fuel tank from a 94 pickup and swapped it in, only to find out it doesn't bolt up in the rear without a body lift so I put some 2" spacers in until I make a metal bracket for it. Rebend taco supply line. After mating the w56 behind it we dropped it in yesterday and discovered the engine was leaning almost 10° too far. Shimmed with washers and got it to 6°. Today I'll make some aluminum spacers. A 3/8" between isolator and frame, and a 1/4" between isolator and engine mount on block. Should do the trick. I hope so atleast. Then to address the issue with the firewall and rear of engine being only a 1/2" from each other and the wiring harness resting on the firewall.

Wow, quite a transformation.  Nice rig, dig the color.  Reminds me of my first '83 I had in the late 80's.

Pedals blasted and primed

W56 was a dirt road soldier so we had to clean him a little

Pedal assembly ready to go in. Cleaned up
R vs RZ series bell housing

Trans oil was surprisingly in decent shape
mini header swap from parts engine that's locked up

Thanks miller. I love the brown as well. Unfortunately it isn't as perfect as the west coast trucks are but after some body work and 4wd fenders it will be good enough for my liking.

Did the egr delete with some plates I made, swapped to t100 pan and pickup tube
Cleaned I up with some stuff we got to try at work. It's like clr but made by another company. Sucks on grease, but cleans the hell out of aluminum without giving it that dark look that alumibrite does to cast parts.

Does a great job on small surface rust as well

Mounts swapped, oil pan, dipstick, and pickup tube

Had to leave the original in there until a freeze plug is gotten to replace it

Some tank comparisons while doing that swap

Closest tank is efi 2nd/3rd gen, far tank is 1st gen long bed

Taco left 22RE right

Re bent the taco supply linr, was planning on having to cut and flair it, but it actually worked perfect. Doesn't look as nice as a factory job would, but for a re bent 20 year old line it isn't too bad.
3rd gen tank is not "bolt in" like all the threads on pirate and marlin say it is. They obviously have a body lift or cut the rib off their bed floor to clear it. Temporarily put some 2" long 1/4 pipe with some waters on it to space it until I can build a permanent solution.

We poked it in there last night to find the issues with clearance and leaning. After shimming still had 6° so making some aluminum spacers this evening to correct it.

Shimmed passenger side and got it to 4°. 3 and a half hours later after cutting the other side mount all apart and cutting over a half Inch out of it we got the motor to 1° . Transmission cross member looks much better now. I can live with 1°

That is 1/2 of spacing on passenger side

Thanks guys I couldn't agree more. I've always had long bed trucks. Folks say they are not as nice but I like to have a box packed with tools and still be able to haul something as well. Plan to get fror cross member finished up today, down pipe on, and a friend is coming in the morning and we will try to get her wired for detonation :fingers crossed:

It's just a 3.blow replacement. Should bolt into a 1st gen. Will certainly drop and go in your 2nd gen your building. (I'm sorry I can't bring myself to call an 84 up runner a 1st gen when the trekker came first lol)

Well, went to u pull it and got a fuse block from a mid 90s corolla to power the fuel pump and other good stuff. Also grabbed a spare valve cover and various bolts/fuses. Got home to put the v6 3 core radiator in and it would bolt directly in, however the hood wouldn't close. If folks are running body lift then it would be perfect. I ended up lowering it about 2". I'll gets pics tomorrow. Loaded it up on the trailer and went over to pops in laws house to use his nice mig welder to finish up the t case mount. Got it done so tomorrow my buddy ben (has much more toyota wiring knowledge than i) is coming down from monroeville (2 hours north) to help get her energized.

Thanks. The exhaust is a littlw cobbled there at the end my buddy cut a littlw too much off and after bending realized it was too short. But can't complain when they don't charge you for it.

done a quick easy job on the intake, do you guys see any possible issues with it?

Used a 3rd gen heater control valve. 1 hose is from the 3rd gen. Other is from taco.
