I tried to remove the crankshaft bolt with my impact but it is torqued to 265 ft.lbs. and is just turning the crank. So I made a couple tools to keep the crankshaft from turning. One for when the flywheel is off, and one for when the flywheel is on.

Did some more tear down today. Only things left are major internals (main bearing caps, connecting rods, pistons and ballance shafts)

The two shafts running longitudinally on either side and protruding from the front of the block with a gear on the end are the ballance shafts much like what would be seen on a 3rz-fe.

Measured the crankshaft trust clearance and found it to be on the very tight end of the normal range. That was good to see. I picked up some plasti-gauge so I am ready to pull the caps and see how the bearings are.

I pulled my rod caps off tonight to check the oil clearances with plastigauge. Each of the bearings that I pulled off were pitted on the wear surfaces. After checking all the clearances I realized that someone had already been in the motor and had installed undersized bearings. Fortunately the surfaces of the crank and rod caps all looked perfect. From my measurements standard size bearings will bring everything back into righteousness.

I pulled the main caps and found the exact same story as on the rod caps.
Beautiful main journals
But scored and pitted undersized bearings
Once again standard size bearings will correct this.  :shake:

I got a used Starrett Mic from fleabay. This will give me more confidence on my engine build than the Chinese dial calipers I've been using. It has 4 anvils with a 1",2", & 3" standard, which give it a range of 0"-4".

Welcome to the board! Feel free to ask questions if you have any along the way. Did you convert a 1KZ-te to a manual pump or did you find one of those rare early factory manual pump engines? If so I'd love to see pictures of it, and hear how they handled the tach signal.

Today Zippo came over to help me start building the motor. I first asked him to pull the crank and pistons so we could start assembling everything. As he pulled the the #2 piston out he brought it over to show me a chunk missing out of the side between the top and middle piston rings.
He also pulled out the chunk that had been bouncing around scoring the cylinder wall.

 :thumbdown: So as Zippo and I were discussing my options of boring the cylinders and ordering new oversized pistons and rings I texted a picture of my woes and worries to Steve who replied with "well I'll just ship you a short block"  :yikes:

You are definitely my favorite English "bloke"!
