New truck project 93 xtra cab
« on: May 15, 2015, 10:47:00 PM »
Just picked this up tonight so i haven't had a chance to over it yet to see what it needs done.
93 xtra cab, 22re 5 speed.  Has a blown head gasket.
5.29's, with lockright in the rear.
tg 4" springs, skys hanger up front.
35" cooper tires that are useable, but will need to be replaced in the near future.
Plans are dual cases, lock the front, put rcv front axles in it, add sliders and bumpers, bob the bed and get some 37"s on it.

the bed is kind of beat on the other side.  I prefer the looks/clearance of bobbed beds as well!
I paid $2200 for the truck which i think was a good deal!

So i have spent all day tearing apart the dash and putting stuff from my 4runner in it.  Put my speakers in the dash, added my clock, added 12v outlet for my cellphone charger.  Spent time getting everything put back together nicely.

Jacked the front up and it definitly has a locker as well.  It just isnt staying locked when you spin the tires by hand.  So i dont know if the lunchbox locker has worn teeth or if the pins/springs need to be replaced.  Not sure what i am going to do about this yet.

My buddy Matt who i bought the truck from said it had death wobble when he drove it before he parked it.  So i took the tires off and all the knuckle studs were loose.  One so far pulled all the threads out of the knuckle. so it looks i will be replacing the knuckle.  I didn't plan on getting this far into an axle tear down tonight, but i think i might just throw 3 studs in this knuckle and leave it for now since im not driving it.  I wanted to check the trunion bearings but i guess i will just order an axle rebuild kit

Mine would ratchet and would spin and sometimes lock from day one. I say wheel it easy one and see how it does.

I need to rebuild the front axle and i was going to pull the diff and check it out.

He told me it pulled hard to one side in 4wd so i bet the locker isnt locking for whatever reason.

I need to order a rebuild kit, honestly i was thinking of tg eliminators since the only real problem i had with my last toy front axle was killing upper trunnions every so often, but havent decided yet

Here is some more pictures of the truck.

As you can see it has aftermarket hid conversion lights, which i am going to pull out i think because i don't want to be "that guy" who blinds all oncoming traffic.

Here is the 22re that is going to get pulled out shortly.  It has a blown headgasket and sounds like it has a knock.  Anyways i found a 22re out of a 90 4runner that has about 150,000 on it.  I can get it for $400, basically a long block, just valve cover down to oil pan.  No intake, exhaust, accessories, etc.

I don't think it is at a bad height on 35"s, compaired to my tacoma on 265/75/16's.   :dunno:  we will see what it wheels like before i go changing suspension.  Although, I may change the rear leafs out because i believe they are skyjacker springs in the back.  I am not positive but they seem super stiff.

Went through and added the clock from my 4runner, fixed the heater control that wasn't working, swapped out broken vents/cupholder.  Also pulled the ignition out because it had a broken key stuck inside when i got it.  After trying to use picks to get the key out i just ended up grinding down a pair of needle nose pliers and it got the broken key out super easy.

Also ordered a full axle rebuild kit from marlin which im waiting to install into my extra axle, but i need to order knckle gussets first and weld them on.  Today, I also went and bought back my old calipers/wheel hubs/wheel spacers and bling rotors and a ubolt flip kit.  I just wanted to upgrade from the solid rotors that are on the truck now.  The rotors were surface rusted so i hit them with some brake clean and steel wool.  the rest of it will go away once it is on the truck and driving.

You can see the high pinion diff sitting there in the corner.  Still debating ordering a set of 5.29s and a detroit to throw in the front.  For now though, the truck is pretty clean for what it is.  the passenger side bed is kinda beat but im not worried about it because i will end up making it worse eventually.   I plan on bobbing the bed which maybe i will get started on this weekend.  I am just trying to collect parts so i can get this thing wheeling.

I am hopefully picking up a budbuilt dual crossmember for $110 soon.  And another buddy has a turbo trans he said he would sell me for $550, which i want to get.  I already have my 23 spline input gear for the crawlbox and my 23 spline 4.7 rear case.  So i either way all i need to do is order a dual adapter and i can either stick with the w56 or go pickup that r151f and have 23spline through out.   I am most likely going to end up ordering an AA 23 spline adapter from work since i can get a good price on it.  I would love to have marlin parts again, but i need to get this thing out wheeling this summer, i may not have too much more time since i start Chico state in a few months.

Got my knuckle gussets and diff armor today so i got my housing cleaned up and the stuff welded on it.  Also picked up some jb weld to fill in a small groove some minor pitting on the knuckle ball.  So ill let that set overnight and then hopefully get to sanding it down and assembleing this front axle tomorrow.  I at least want to try to get the knuckles installed on the housing with the right preload.  I still have to pull the 5.29 diff from the front axle of the truck, and if everything looks good there then i will throw the diff into this housing and the whole axle under the truck, freshly rebuilt.

Aint that the truth. Same goes for 1st gen Runners. Actually for any toyota come to think of it. Oh well we will get top dollar when we sell our rigs!  :ha_ha: like that will happen.

I havent really touched the truck.

I put the rebuilt axle under the front, swapped out the leafs to a ruf pack i had under the 4runner which pushed my axle forward a little.  Drove it around the block a few times, didn't over heat, there is still no signs of a blown headgasket.  :dunno:  i might have to pull the head and take it to a shop or something to see what the loud ticking is from the top end though.

Hey Mike, are your valve cover bolts to tight, get a piece of wooden Dowel, old shovel, even a good branch, use as a stethoscope

Valve cover bolts are not too tight. But at this point i need to get a new valve cover gasket and half moons cause it leaks oil like crazy out the back there. Regardless, there was no marks under the valve cover from any contact.

Using a long screwdriver the loudest ticking/"knocking" i can hear is from the valve cover bolts

I have the same loud ticking in my 22re, but think its because of my unevenly worn cam..
