DIY plate bumper kits
« on: Apr 08, 2015, 10:05:04 AM »
Just wondering what ya'll think about this. I started a plate bumper for my 87 pickup and was thinking about making and selling DIY bumper kits. I'd shear, bend and prep the pieces, ship them out,  you do the welding yourself. I imagine the problem most people have with building a bumper is the design and prep work,  since a lot of guys have welders that's usually the least of their worries with building one. I'm thinking 10G, 3/16" and/or 1/4" for options, sell them for around $300ish. Thoughts?

Sorry, had to get access to a computer to resize the pics. This is my first attempt at a plate bumper, going to do more work on it tonight. After this one I'm going to build a kit using the same measurements then tack it together and make sure it fits good. When/if I get to the second one, I'll be selling it since I obviously don't need 2. If I can actually sell these things then I can convince the wife to let me get more shop time in. Any thoughts or input are appreciated!

You should also post a side view.  Looks good from the front, but I'm curious of how far out the bottom would stick

Thanks guys! So far I'm very pleased with how it's coming along. This is the best I have for a side view. Originally I was planning on adding a winch but I don't think it's deep enough. Last night I welded all the seams, tonight I'll be making a couple mods for extra strength, cutting out holes for blinkers and lights, then it's paint time! I'll be bolting it up tonight so I'll take some more pics and add them tomorrow. I used 10 gauge for this one, weighs around 50#. If I go through with building kits I'll probably use 3/16" and make the winch plate deeper. Any other sugestions or features you guys would like to see? I'm also thinking about tacking kits together and shipping them as 3 pieces instead of about 7, not sure.
