Inner or outer seal?
« on: Nov 12, 2014, 05:18:32 PM »
So what turned into pulling my rear pinion and putting a new seal and stud eliminator kit, became a headache. By this pic can you tell me what's going on? First off I hate drums and only dealt with disc brakes. But I think outer seal needs to be replaced.

Is it gear oil or brake fluid?

Your there, May as well replace axle bearing and seals, I would replace wheel cylinder, New shoes and drums, if paint is gone off backing plate, I would clean up and paint, that way everything is good to go

So basically just get a rock assault rear end minus third member lol... Little more cash but a lot less head ache.. Already have 5.29s on both ends, figured its about $1500 for new housing, disc conversion, axle shafts, and maybe bearings and seals.

nothing wrong with a stock rear end, unless youre bashing housings id keep the stock one. freshen it up and run it. they last forever, im running a stock 87 or 88 ifs rear with stock everything but drum shoes and its never given me problems and its seen a ton of wheeling.

if the bearing feels good, rock auto has everything for 130, wheel cylinders, drums, shoes and seals, plus a can of paint

Just basic maintenance!  I've had wheel cylinders go bad, and the inner seal is easy to change out.  And word of advice, if you have to tear into one side, do the other at the same time.  If you don't, the chances are the other is soon to go.

And don't forget to make sure your diff vent is clear.

I just ordered a diff vent extender to raise it up to be out of most water. I think that might have been part of problem, getting submerged and sucking water.
Is the heavy duty Eco seal that trail gear sells worth it or should I just go with a basic kit for inner?

As for outer seal don't I have to press bearing off to do that one? What would you used to clean drums to get out all that oil and grease? Just a degreaser?

So I guess I need a sst tool to pull and replace both inner and outer seals? Is there another way to accomplish this without those tools?

So for about $250 I can get a complete donor rear end. The reason I'm thinking of going this route is no where local for me can press out these bearings, been told they cut them out and I feel there I'd too much risk in that. What do you guys think? It's $140 before shipping to get the axle service kit for both sides and what ever pressing the bearings will cost. I know there is some risk that the other axle would need the same thing, but if outer seal is blown I won't pay for it.

Stay away from TG stuff.  Marlin has a better service bearing/seal kit.  And any mechanic should have a press, and if your replacing the outer seals, just put on new bearings anyway.  I'd spend the coin and do a full service on your axle.  Instead of buying one that you may have to do the same thing in a year.  This way, you know you have a fully rebuilt axle housing, and you really don't have to worry about anything for quite some time.

That's how I think!

And a seal puller is cheap at most parts houses!  Or if you have a Harbor Freight nearby, even better.

Your question was inner or outer seals. The inner seal would be the ones that keep the gear oil in the axle housing, the outers if Im not mistaken are to keep stuff from getting in from the drum area to the bearings. Replacing everything while your in there isn't a bad idea but if you think the bearings are good you could probably just clean everything good, make sure the wheel cylinders aren't leaking, replace the inner seals, check or replace the o rings. Marlin has eco inner axle seals.

Just noticed Cheese already posted the link to the seals.

what is leaking? gear oil, brake fluid, or is it just dirty water from the axle being submerged?
