i would be leery of putting a lot on weight on pivot point that was not a double shear point.  Having 100 pounds of tire and wheel plus 10 gallons of fuel on a trailer axle hinge is getting down right scary.

I'm really digging the Expedition idea.  And of all those ideas, the only one that looks scary is the Lambo style.  I can see somebody getting hurt very easily.

I have done some thinking about this as well...  Seems like every setup I have seen sags... So I did some thinking and this is what I came up with:

Get a toyota hub, wheel bearings, spindle, birf, and free wheeling hub to use as the hinge.  Cut and weld the birf to the bumper and bolt the spindle down around it (so it is aligned as it would be on the front axle).  Build out the hub assembly the way you would on the front axle but with no rotor (use old crappy wheel bearings and preload the hell out of them).  Use the lug pattern to bolt the "swing" portion of the tire carrier to, or just weld to the hub.  The wheel bearings should be able to hold a huge load, as long as you attach to the hub properly.

With the birf being welded, it can't spin like and axle shaft would.  SO you could open the carrier, lock the free wheeling hub, and it would be locked open...

I wouldn't use it to lock it shut, I would still use some type of clamp.  But it would be cool if you have to open it up while you are off camber to be able to lock it open.  Also, add a shelf that folds down when the carrier is open.  Build the table shelf top out of a thick plastic cutting board, and you can use it as a workbench, or table.

I don't really want a tire carrier, because I want the COG advantage of having the tire under the truck and right above the rear axle.  However, I have been leaning more and more towards adventure wheeling, so a swing out carrier good for water cans, gas cans, shovels, axes, chain saws, ect... would be very useful!

...why buy when you can build?

this has since gone away on my truck (should have kept this edition, regret getting rid of it)

Modified the rear Marlin bumper to a swing out:banger:

it was made about 6 years ago, got rid of it when i bobbed the truck..
