steering arm wobble
« on: Aug 03, 2014, 11:04:26 AM »
The bushing on the left side of my stock steering kit arm has recently become loose and at both low and high speeds causes the tires to dance around the road and when I brake hard, the truck swerves(to the right usually). When I have the truck stationary and running, I've had a friend turn the steering wheel slowly while I'm under the truck and I can see the assembly of the bushing, arm and mounting hardware being pulled apart, making a knocking noise. How would I go about replacing this bushing and tightening the connection?  Thanks

-Noah

The tie rod end? You'd replace it.

I also agree. You just replace the tie rod end. This is not a bushing, but a rubber boot that covers a ball and socket joint. It is called a tie rod because is ties the right steering arm to the left steering arm. When you have your alignment done the tech adjust the length of this rod by turning it thereby either lengthening it or shortening it. Over the course of time the ball and socket in the tie rod end will become worn due to repeated force being applied to turn the wheels. Replacement of tie rod ends is considered a regular maintainance item.

Thanks for the info. Right after posting I spent a little time surfing MC and learned how elementary the fix was. Hopefully this fixes my death wobble!

Should help quite a bit. Also, check your shackle bolts...
