86 4Runner 2rz swap "Chuyota" 1st build
« on: May 25, 2014, 11:56:15 PM »
My buddy has been in the 4x4 scene for a while now. So the story goes like this.  He convinced us to join him for a ride to Bald Mountain for some 4x4ing. Even though we rolled lol, I fell in love with the fact that you can explore Mother Nature in your truck! Climb things most trucks can't. This isn't my first Toyota truck, during our high school years all us had Lowered Toyota trucks (bagged) I introduce the birth of "Chuyota"  I picked her up for $2,500, she had a bad rod knock.

Donor truck, 98 Tacoma.
We  buddy sold most of the parts before I remembered to take pics.  The truck had "blown head gaskets" so we thought all we needed was head gasket, pressure test and a resurface. . When we took the engine apart we found the cylinder walls filled with rust! The machine shop had to resurface the block in order to get all the pits out of the block.  In the end we had to do a complete rebuild.

That sucks about the rust. It always cost more then you think it will.
If you see it, its for sale.

So you're going to put the 4Runner body on the Tacoma frame and use the Tacoma full wiring harness?

No, Tacoma items are going to be installed on the 4Runner.

Engine is out, now it's time to install the bell housing from the Tacoma on the 4Runner

Sold all the 22re harness and engine.

The goal is to make the Tacoma dash work on the 4runner.

Went to Pick A Part and found these bad boys today. 1/2 price!!
For some onboard air.  The Volvo only had 80,000 miles.  Now I have to figure out how to mount and use it.

Front hanger is in. We cut and welded a receiver.

We used the old 22re engine mount brackets, just cut the inside out. Seem to work well. Motor is level.

Welding on some homemade  frame reinforcement

Cut some holes and getting chewed out for working on the rig to much, I am sure we all can relate:)

Cut out the section so you can still see the serial numbers.

 A little paint.

Here is the start of the York to 2rz mount, going to drive this off the alternator pulley so we can still use air conditioning from the factory 2rz compressor.
Started by welding a 22re Ac tensioner pulley to the end of the alternator pulley. Once the bearing is removed from the Ac pulley the socket will go through and you can tighten the alternator pulley to the alternator.

Next is to make the mounting brackets, one sits behind the power steering bracket the other two are for the York, one will be a tensioner. This is going to be very similar to Marlin's York mount.

Dash is in, we managed to keep the 86 HVAC unit. Cut and welded the support brackets off the 86 onto the taco dash support bracket.

Extended passenger side  tail light and fuel pump harness. We kept the factory 4runner  tank and pump.

Disassembled donor Tcase and prepared it for new gears.

She's ready!!

Removed transmission- time to clean years of dirt and oil!!

Prepping for adaptor

Ready for install

Ready for install.

Installed gear box.

Finished reinforcing the driver side.
Next is shock hoops. Which I need to trim, to long.

After installing the transmission, I am really considering a "flat belly" much of the forums say its worth it.  Now it's time to wait for some more parts.

For some reason the shock hoops are to long for my truck.  Maybe cause it was a straight axle to begin with..? Frame seems to set higher than a IFS. I had to cut 2- 1/2 inches. I couldn't cut my wheel well, all of my Evap and  fuse box are setting on top.

Time to add brackets to the Tcase support cut out.

Added a lil protection to the rear diff.

Since I couldn't get the lift I wanted with the 63" Chevy leaf springs I had to bite the bullet and buy  5" TG leaf springs. Luckily I found some used ones for a good deal.

I CANT WAIT TO TAKE MY BABY OUT FOR A RIDE!!!!!!!!
