2014 Crawler
« on: Mar 02, 2014, 05:13:58 PM »
Hey guys and gals.  Y'all may think I'm a bit crazy.  But I bought my new taco to be my dd/crawler.  After experimenting, wheeling, and testing stuff on my two previous Toyotas, I have a pretty sweet plan for this rig.  I'm a Canadian connection for wheelin!

Here's the 86 that we sasd...regret selling it now.

Then I got a 2006 tacoma and fixed it up.  I figured out a few flaws...and I'm using that knowledge in my favor.

And now...

Meat

Will be running total chaos long travel in front.

Other parts I have
Probably swap bumper from the 2006
Swap winch from 2006 for sure
Swap differentials
Swap OBA

Parts yet to purchase
Marlin 4.7 Tacobox
Raceline beadlocks
Rear suspension(might do apron under but keep good clearance)
Armor(rear bumper, DIY sliders)
Gussets and extra extended cv axles

Wow nice trucks.  Why did you feel the need to upgrade from the 2006?
What kind of wheeling to you do up there?  Why are you staying with independent suspension?  Just curious Im not criticizing.
And how big are those tires?

Thanks for the interest man!

I wanted to move up from the 2006 for a few reasons. It is a double cab long box, the longest tacoma available.  I get hung up on a lot of stuff, and I can't take the hard lines like I want.  140" wheelbase and a pretty low frame height really gets annoying sometimes.   This new truck is a double cab short box.  So the wheelbase is shorter by 13".  Which is a fairly large difference, and it very noticeable on the trail.  The 2006 is an automatic.  Which drives really nice, and I have never had one problem with it on the trail.  But I wanted a manual so I could run a crawler and be in complete control.  I've also always been a sucker for the DCSB looks over the DCLB.  Shorter looks really slick I think.  The 06 also has 225000km.  And by no means is it worn out.  It still runs and drives amazingly.  But I wanted to start fresh with a brand new vehicle(I've never had a brand new vehicle before).

Wheeling up here is a mostly mountainous, dirt, mud(hate mud!), a little bit of rocks, combination of everything.  I prefer rock crawling by far...moab and the rubicon were two amazing trips I took in 2013.  I'll be going back to moab in may with the 2006 tacoma.  I'm hoping to get down to the hammers & dusy in 2015 with the new truck.

I'm keeping IFS at this time, because it costs a lot to have a nice sas!  And I don't have the skills to make my own 3link.   I don't really have anyone I know locally that has the knowledge either.   And it costs a lot....one day I will sas the 2014.  Put it on tons and 4Ds or somethin.

The tires are 37s.  I'm running 35s on the 2006.  They work great.  However I want to upgrade.  I will see how the front diff and cv axles respond to them.  Only time will tell.  Having a crawler will help.  I'm a careful driver and have never busted a cv on the 2006 from wheeling(I did break one shaft that had been compromised by rubbing though).  So I'm confident I can make 37s work.  I'm trying to find a steering upgrade, as well as a brake upgrade.  My steering already sucks when I'm aired down on the 35s.  37s will be worse.  Braking isn't bad with the 35s.  The 37s are only 6lbs heavier.  But I would like to have really good brakes.

It's all trial and error.  If something doesn't work...change it.

Test fitted the wheels this afternoon

Piss tons of room with 4.75" bs.  There will be tons of room even with the spindle gusseted.

While I was at work I changed the outer boots on my spare LT axles. I prefer the oem boots to the Allpro boots I had.

 Axles ready to go

The furkid standing by as usual.
