stuck differential plug
« on: Sep 19, 2013, 02:43:20 PM »
I am not sure if this goes here in this part of the forum or in the differential section since this could apply to multiple areas. I have a stuck differential filler plug. Normally if I was just an ordinary stuck bolt I would douse it in a little penetrating oil then a bit later get after it with a torch. However I am a little concerned to hit the plug with heat. Any suggestions here?

Worst ones in the past I have welded a piece of rod to as a breaker bar, then you can usually get them out no problem. It gives you the heat and something to grab it with all in one motion.

I definitely never thought of that one. Unfortunately I do not have a welded I wonder if I  could epoxy a rod to it. I guess I could always take it down to the local weld shop

I'll bet a liberal amount of JB weld would work as long as you make some grinder marks for it to bond to.  I would probably heat it up too.  It would be fun to see if it works anyway...

Rod stock, an old wrench, whatever seems to fit the occaision.

Don't put them in so tight...

Is it stripped? Use a cheater bar or pipe wrench.

Thank you for your help, it finally came off after hitting it with the torch and PB Blaster.

Another trick could be to use a Dremel to cut a ridge into the side of the plug facing the counter clockwise direction, and use a hammer and a flat head screw driver or dull chisel on this ridge to hammer and slowly rotate the plug out.
