IFS parts on solid axle = 3" wider front end,???
« on: May 09, 2002, 03:04:23 PM »
While I was down at the shop picking up my 4.70 crawler,, I heard Marlin mention there is a way to widen the solid Toyota axle by incorperating IFS parts?

we are going to be doing a solid axle swap on a 1988 V-6 Runner,, and if we could get the info on how to widen the axle that would help greatly,,!!! :)

Thanks Jaime

Ok, I've got it

IFS uses wider bearing hubs in comparision to live axle bearing hubs, and the bearings are the same size.

So this wider IFS bearing hub (the part that the rotor bolts to, so behind the rotor) will bolt directly to the spindle of the sold live axle.

However, if you use the vented rotors from the IFS, now they will be off by about 1/2 an inch. So you will need to make some kind of a spacer to get it back in line.

Front Range Off Road sells a special kit just for this.
If you call them, you need to ask for Brian. He is one hell of a guy!

Check it out here: http://www.frontrangeoffroadfab.com/wide.htm

BigMike

ps. Brian, I know I need to get your parts posted. I will jump on it here...

:moon:What if I use the standard rotors off the live axle? Will this just be a bolt-on situation??

:b_s:You will need to make an 11/16" spacer to fit between the axle hub and rotor. Use an IFS axle hub, rotor and brake calipers. Every thing else is from a SA front end. Hope this helps you out!

You use the 30spl SA Lockout potter85, a 27spl IFS lockout won't even try and fit if it tried to lol

Here's what my buddies and I are running on our front ends.

if you want the 58" IFS front width... here is what my buddy did on his 81 front axle he is using for rear steer on his 78 Toy.

FJ60 Rotors (I got 1981-1985 FJ60 Land Cruiser Premium Rotors from Napa, Part Number # 4885799 $31.99)
V6 Calipers
IFS Hubs
(4) 2"x0.5" Grabe 8 Bolts w/ Locknuts

We used a 1/2" Drill bit to drill out the ears on the Knuckles & the mounts on the Calipers
Then drilled out the holes on the Rotor so it could be bolted down to the IFS Hub.
You must very carefully remove material from the mounting surface on the calipers.... til the rotor sits inside correctly as it will be slightly off.
taking very little material off the caliper ears.... is much easier and safer then the mounting ears on the knuckle.
Be careful you can take too much off the caliper.

All the spacing is correct and no spacers or "conversion" parts needed.

the hub bodies from SFA and IFS are EXACTLY the same dimensions... the flange is just cast on 1.5in out on the IFS Hub.
No need to by Spacers or Sky's Conv.

I drilled 4 new holes and enlongated the two OEM bolt holes.....
my buddy's reasoning.... 6 strong holes... rather then drill all 6 new holes and have 2 weak ones by having soo many holes all right by each other.

dude...i didnt get it either. it makes a bunch of sense now though. caliper sits on the other side of mounting ears and you redrill the rotor to match the samller 6 bolt pattern that the IFS hubs use.  then use SA lockouts and its legitimified.

Check out my build thread I used IFS hubs and Tacoma brakes for a drop off rotor so no messing with wheel bearings to replace a rotor.
