ImmortalYota80's First Gen Build
« on: Jul 02, 2013, 10:22:46 PM »
Hey everyone I figured it was time for me to start a build so i can get some motivation and to document my build. I picked up a super clean 1980 yota 4x4 for $2500 last august. Heres the story behind the truck. Im the second owner i bought it from a older man who bought it new in 79 and has garaged it since new. Its super clean the whole under-body, frame, and axles are all black still. Its got 126800 miles on it.

Heres the plan, i not goin to do anything crazy just doin the usual RUF/63" chevy build. I have all the parts to convert to powersteering(truck didnt have it stock). And of course high steer, wheel spacers etc... Further down the road I plan either a 22RE or 3rz swap with dual cases. The trucks my DD so it needs to be reliable yet somewhat offroad capable.

So ive collected the majority of all the parts needed so far i have:
-Powersteering parts
-Highsteer
-IFS Box
-IFS Box Mount
-Chevy Leafs
-Skys 63" chevy swap kit
-U-bolt Flip kits
-Rear Leafs for my RUF pack
-Shock Hoops
-And a bunch of other misc crap i cant remember

What im ordering in the next week:
-Shocks
-Axle rebuild kits with wheel bearings
-Front Crossmember
-Boomerang Shackles

Now Today i started the tear down. Tore a bunch of stuff off the truck pulled fenders, axles, driveshafts, steering box, cut the torque rod bracket off etc...

Ran into a little problem seems my torque rod bracket was about ready to shear off which is no problem cause im ditching it except it cracked my frame

I'll weld it up tomorrow and throw some plate over it just to reinforce it.
Let me know what you guys think and throw some suggestions my way please this is my first build so i want to do it right the first time.
Thanks,
Bryan :turtle:

wow! clean pickup!  PLEASE don't give it any body damage haha.  My suggestion is to get some sliders and rear bumper on that rig before it goes off-road at all

So i did a little work this morning before it go too hot. Got all my powersteering stuff hooked up and bolted to my block just have to pick up a belt and mount my resivor.

Got my Sky's package in the mail today!

63" Chevy Leaf Swap kit man these parts are beefy glad i went with them
Cleaned up and painted my rear axle as well as welded new lower shock mounts on the axle

That white stuff is oven cleaner. For those of you that dont know this stuff works GREAT to remove dirt, grime, grease, oil etc.. Got it at the dollar store so its pretty dam cheap too

And lastly finally pulled the old arm off my ifs box. Man what a pain in the ass that was. Also cleaned it up threw some color on it and installed my new pitman arm for it

I'm hoping to have my rear end all put back together by saturday. Just have to weld the Sky's kit to my frame paint the leafs and hang em. Now i just need my knuckle service kit and leaf hanger to show up so i can get the front  suspension all together. Also if anyone has a pair of rear leafsprings I need a set for my RUF pack.

Got some more stuff accomplished. Got this pretty little package in the mail today

So I cut off my stock mounts and got everything square so i could weld up the leaf hanger. In the process i broke a damn chisel?! Never seen one break like this damn cheap Chinese tool steel :pokinit:.

I backed the hanger with a piece of 1x2x3/16th angle iron this things not goin anywhere!

Got most of it welded up but the wind started to pick up and blow my shielding gas away so i got a little porosity in a weld or two. I'll grind those out in the morning re weld them and finish all the other welding.

I'm also gonna try to have my rear end all pulled together and finished by tomorrow we will see how far i get.
Also found a few random pics of my truck before it was in pieces lol enjoy.

Nice truck.  Nice pics in the green field.

I've never seen a chisel do that.  And oven cleaner...I'll try that, it sounds interesting.

If ever sell that thing I'm sure Hawaii wants it.  We love our Yotas.

Finished welding up my front hanger this morning

I did 3 passes on all my welds for it. Overkill you say? This thing aint goin anywhere.

Got my old man out to give me a hand getting some brackets cut off

Everythings becoming one big clusterfuck I need to clean everything up and re organize it

Managed to finished my rear suspension today!

Ended up moving my front leaf spring hanger froward exactly 11 inches and its pretty damn close to the stock axle location. I moved my rear shackle hanger back about 3 inches and got this shackle angle,

It was almost exactly a 45 and a little too steep of an angle for my likeing so i moved the shackle hanger back to the end of the frame and got this

Much better angle IMO

Tomorrow i gotta work a little in the morning but i hope to have the rear axle mounted up and have the truck on its own weight in the back. I'm really moving fast with this havent really ran into any problems hopefully I can finish this within the next week. After tuesday i have 9 days off so I think i can get it all accomplished. Wish me luck i may need it!

Kick ass yesterday. Got my rear axle hung and the rear of the truck on its own weight.

Then i decided to dive into my front axle. Didnt take any pictures of taking it apart but  it was pretty dam easy me and a buddy had it completely torn down in a hour or two

So today after i get off of work im going to go pick up my axle rebuild kit, some new cone washers, grease, and order a u-bolt flip kit for the front axle. Hopefully by the end of tomorrow i have everything cut off the axle my diff armor welded on, and the knuckles and housing cleaned and painted. By tuesday I should have the front axle done and be able to mock it up to place my steering box and my shock hoops. My main goal is to have this thing driving by Saturday. Theres a toyota swap meet here in town on saturday and id like to be able to drive my truck to it. Wish me luck guys!:smokin:
