Author Topic: New Forum Alert system for improved notifications! (Read 4699 times)

Hello

Community,

You'll notice a small opaque

image to the right of your user name at the top of every page. This is our new Alert System!

What it does is frequently checks the forum for new activity relating to any of the following:
-New topics and replies in subscribed boards and topics
-Quotes of your own posts
-When someone likes one of your posts
-New PMs
-New buddies
-~~And when someone gives you +/- Turtle points~~ (disabled 6/12)

Requirements are the following: 1) You must be logged in, and 2) your browser must support Javascript.

When you click on the

icon at the top of any page, it will open a new Alert Panel. From here you can access a display page of all Alerts broken up by date (see here) and you can disable any of the above Alerts as needed (see here). You can also control how to be Alerted to topics and boards and even enable automatic tracking whenever you post without having to use the "Notify" function (see here).

I am still working on the placement of the Alert Panel. I plan to make it appear right beneath the

icon (just have some CSS issues to sort through).

I really like this because I am notified when someone Likes my post ~~or sends me some Turtle Points~~, a functionality which did not exist before. Enjoy!

Whats funny is, now since it's been installed, nobody has been messing with my Turtle Points.

I saw that. After opening one "link", viewing, then pressing the back button, the others were gone. I can only check one, and the notification disappears. So I can't check the rest.

I like the idea though. BTW, I am liking this forum more and more over others. Even though I have a Taco and most here are earlier, I am still learning and enjoying. Thanks.

I do not see this as a good feature. It takes all the fun out of giving or taking turtle points, no more anonymity. It told me somebody took a turtle point from me for placing a want ad. Who cares?

I like the other features and find them useful, but this seems too invasive

Do Turtle points really matter? I see some long time members here with big negatives. They seem nice and helpful to me. Is it just their friends giving them a hard time?

This is certainly a valid point. I can disable individual types of Alerts so this wouldn't be any trouble to do. Anonymity is the key word here. I'll ponder this for a bit...

I think it's great that Big Mike listens to the will of the people. We might not get a say in how our government runs our country anymore....

If you don't earn enough in a set amount of time you're banned forever. It just means you have to make the cut. Otherwise everyone here will hate you and troll you on all the other boards.

I mentioned this in another thread and it's worth repeating here. The script that ran the Magic Turtles was only compatible with our older forum version, but since then I've vastly improved my PHP, SQL, and JavaScript knowledge so I should revisit the system and see if I can make it compatible once again. They were a ton of fun!
