"Pumba" the '71 FJ55 w/ diesel swap
« on: Dec 16, 2012, 10:38:18 PM »
I just sold my 4Runner last week and found this pig hanging out in Ridgecrest, CA. Hadn't really considered a FJ55 until someone threw out the idea of a trade and by then I had already sold the Runner  :smack:
So I went out and looked for one, here's what I found:

1971 FJ55 Land Cruiser
lifted with 35's
6.2L Detroit diesel engine
Banks sidewinder turbo
700R4 overdrive automatic
Dual cases
Custom bumpers and sliders
64 gallon tank

I'll try and post more pictures as I resize them below the 140KB limit. For now that'll have to do

Thanks! So far it's been pretty fun. I need to work on the brakes though, I'm daily driving it and it stops like a 40yr old rig would. Looks like they put a GM Hydroboost system in. The "pig" is so heavy, it needs more stopping power. Would anybody know if simply rebuilding it would fix this or should I try and squeeze a brake booster in there (very little room, I'll have to post pics of the engine bay). Talked to a diesel guy and was told that diesels have vacuum but very very little. I'm not sure if the vacuum brake booster would even work.

The front has disc, the rear has drum. Does your 55 have a vacuum assist or is it just a bigger master cylinder?

I've done a little bit of research and the Hydroboost system seems to be the way to go. I talked to a friend of mine who drives truck for a living. He tells me that diesels have little vacuum (some people say no vacuum). The Hydroboost doesn't appear to run off of vacuum but hydrolically through the steering pump somehow. I'll have to read up more on that system but I think I'll start by bleeding the brakes and maybe replacing the master cylinder, $18 reman'd and about $50 new.

Took a couple hours off work today to clean her up. I really haven't done much to it except for a new radiator cap and fix the radiator overflow. The hose from the radiator to the overflow tank was rotted out. We'll see how much more I can get done.

So far I am really enjoying my 55.
Spent some quality time with the degreaser my wife put in my stocking. Also changed the oil, washed and looked over the truck. I didn't have time to degrease the underside but I think there is a transmission leak somewhere.
Looks like the doubler is a NP203/Toy split case from Advanced Adapters. Found a ViAir 1 gallon air tank hanging out under there (no compressor found... yet) a Lokar shifter and an anti wrap bar. I'm pretty sure someone started to build this as an expedition rig or it may have been at one time.
I pulled up and threw away the sound material and rubber matting in the rear passenger area. No old coins or tools but I did find a couple pennies, dimes and rust. It was wet under the matting from the recent rains so I'll let it dry out and take care of the rust then. Saw a friend at REI Tuesday and he suggested the roll on bed liner without the gritty stuff. I will probably go that direction.

Yeah, been on Pirate since 2009 and never had been flamed until I was selling my 4Runner. A guy actually created a Marlin account just to flame me here. Mind you, I wasn't selling the truck on Pirate. Apparently he thought the rig I bought from a guy on Pirate I stripped for parts and resold at a higher price. Been avoiding that site ever since.
Marlin and ih8MUD seem to be great resources so far. It's been a while since I last posted and I found out the mini truck calipers on the truck are from an early model pickup and not the ifs calipers. The hydroboost is the way to go per you and many others I've talked to. Just need to get the proper calipers and rotors on there.
I'll try and update more here soon.

Just bookmarked Matt!!

From a quick search, what power steering pump are you running on that Detriot diesel?  Cause this site says you need a GM pump that puts out 1200-1500 PSI.  And what steering box you got?  If your not running a GM PS pump, your probably not getting enough power to operate the brakes.  Just a thought.  Here's link.   http://www.thehollisterroadcompany.com/hydroboost.html

With all the torque that Diesel is making, you may want to give your T case mount a little help! If that square tube cross member is sound, you may be able to get away with replacing the tabs that are in use now with some triangular pieces of plate. Ive been eyeballin that Front Range brake kit too, looks slick!

Well, I found a registration to a non-op'd '88 Suburban. I'll aas-u-me that the pump is the GM unit off of that. Steering box is a Saginaw (spelling?). I took her up to the snow and it did pretty good, a little heavy but I think that worked to my advantage in some situations and I had plenty of power. I got stuck trying to pull a buddies FZJ80 out. It's embarassing to admit but another buddy ending up pulling us both out with his 4Runner. Made me miss my 4Runner a bit.

I'd like to see if a fab shop could do a "budbuilt" type of crossmember. If the Front Range brake is the one on the back of the t-case I would love to have that working. There's no cable going to it. I need to pull it off and see what it will take to get it working.

Can't believe how long it's been!
Had Pumba up into Red Lake doing a trail opening and digging new pit for the toilet  :puke: . Better appreciate that one guys, 1.5 feet of dirt and 1.5 feet of granite, got to play with a gas powered jack hammer though  :_order:
Still learning that the diffs are on the passenger side, that caused a lot of hangups. I was concerned about the width and the height. This is the first full sized rig I've run and after seeing the pics from Deans flop I get nervous.
Going to try and post some pictures later. Been doing a bunch of stuff:

front breaks upgraded to fj60 rotors with the mini truck ifs calipers

had the radiator cleaned and a couple leaks fixed

mounted some new gauges

ran some BG109 through the motor (awesome results)

and swapped in a Marlink with fj80 tierod ends.....

Very handsome FJ55.  I am working on a 79 FJ55 and would appreciate your sharing with me the builder of your bumpers and sliders.  Thanks for the help.
