R452 Overdrive gear set
« on: Aug 14, 2012, 07:04:17 PM »
I have read the posts about running a R452 5th gear set in a R150/151f trans to get a .69 overdrive ratio.  I got excited when I heard about this option, however that elation was quickly deflated when I found out about the availability of the R452 transmission.

My question is this; Why cant the gears be made new in the US (or perhaps a willing manufacturer), and sold as an upgrade for the R150/151's

I think with gas prices being high many would welcome a better overdrive. And would make a R150/151 a more viable option for V6 and V8 swaps that don't run
3000+ rpms cruising.

I admit to being selfish and wanting someone else to make it for me, but i have money.

Because people doing a v6 or v8 swap are running 4.10s not 5.29s

That's not an answer.  I have a 4.3L V6 with 4.10s and could use some higher gears I'm turning 2800-3000 around 70-75mph.  I live in an area where the speed limits are 75mph and 80mph I'd like to keep up without blowing my engine or over heating it.

Its really a question of "is there money in it".  I would say yes, not only wheelers could use em with 5.29s and such, but stock daily drivers and the "tuner crowd" as well.

I daily drive my rig with 5.29s and a 22re on 35" tires. In 5th gear at 65 mph I'm running 3250 rpms about. I honestly just think a more viable option would be stepping up in tire size or running a numerically lower ring and pinion ratio.

I have 33's or rather 285/75 R16's but I have another truck with 39's already 33s are a good size for the street.  Also its in a Samurai so 35's wont fit well.

What are you running for a tcase? If you have a Sammy case then you could run different gears to change your final drive.

God no, the only things good on a sammy is the body and frame (as long as its properly braced). I used all yota engine and drivetrain then swapped the 4.3 later.

For the record sammy drivetrain is crap, I seen 4 axle shafts snap all at the same time, ripped out t cases, burned clutches, twisted driveshafts, broken flanges, all this behind stock 1.3L's. I even saw a guy who had his intermediate shaft come loose on the freeway and bang up his transmission tunnel (it scared him soo bad he promptly sold his rig).
