rear fender trimming on a 4runner?
« on: Aug 07, 2012, 05:23:27 PM »
how are you guys going about trimming the rear fenders on first gen 4runners and sealing things back up?                                                              the 4runner im building for my dad just clears 33" swampers at full stuff with chevy 63" springs. when he decides he needs bigger tires im gonna need to trim those fenders. i see lots of runners with trimmed fenders so how are you guys sealing them back up? i searched this topic and found nothing. pictures would be GREATLY appreciated.

Sheet metal, welding and Bondo, sorta of like tubbing a drag car.

I have also seen the whole wheel well, inner and outer cut out and cut in half, stretched and filled in and welded back in place

Started by splitting the inner and outer pinch welds. After that cut out a section of the inner portion of the wheel well, then made vertical even cuts long enough to bridge the gap. Tacked then and bondo. I easily clear 37's with 63 inch springs.

THANKS! ideas and pictures like this is what i was hoping for. so that last pic was the final step befor bondo? i have no experience with bondo i was un unaware it could be used to fill actual holes.

I forgot a step. I used fiberglass first to fill the big gaps. Then I used the Bondo to shape the edges. It was the first time I worked with that stuff also. It wasn't that difficult. Ill try to find more pics for you.

This is after the fiberglass. I painted the inner wheel well and then bondoed the edge to shape it. Its been done now for about a year and has proved to be pretty durable. The second pic you can get an idea of the room it creates.

I have a 2 inch lift on my 4runner and I am planning on clearing 38's to 40's under it with all the fender trimming.  I took the fender up to where the body flares out and opened it up from there.  I build new inner wheel wells and welded them in and flared out the outer flares 3 inches.  It is a lot of work, a lot, a lot of work but a supper low center of gravity.  This is the build:

I did something similar on my build.  I only run 35s but I had a wheelbase stretch to deal with and just had to make the openings a bit longer.  I just plazed out a bit leaving enough to work back in and re-weld to the inner wells, a bit of bondo and paint over...
