Topic: Need clarification on difference between 1st and 2nd gen. 4Runner alloy rims

I have an '88 4Runner SR5 and on the side of the stock Toyota alloy rims in raised letters are TOYOTA in one section and 15x7JJ-15 DOT in a different section. I bought 3 4Runner alloy rims, which appear identical to my original rims, but in addition to TOYOTA they have 15x7JJ-8 DOT and OFFSET 8 written in separate sections.
 By reviewing OEM 4Runner alloy rims for sale on Ebay it is apparent to me the OFFSET 8 rims are from 2nd generation 4Runners. Can anyone tell me what the difference is between the 2 types of rims and if the OFFSET 8 rims can be run on a 1st generation 4Runner?

In doing some research on the internet it appears the offset 8 and offset 15 are measurements in millimeters and are often referenced to as negative numbers. I believe it refers to the distance of the mounting surface of the rim from the center of the rim width. 8mm=0.315 inch and 15 mm=0.5906 inch; therefore, these rims must mount about 1/3 inch farther in/out. Question is which one provides the wider track?

So the 2nd generation rims (OFFSET 8; really minus 8 vs minus 15 for 1st gen. rims) move the wheels  0.276 inch farther out providing a wider track.

I would like to use the offset 8 wheels on my 88 4runner as I cannot find any of the first gen version (offset 15).  I plan to wrap them in 235 75 15 tires.  I hate for tires to stick way outside of the fender.  Anyone see any problems with this?  Will I even be able to tell the slight difference (0.25") b/w an offset 8 and the offset 15 wheels?  Thanks

Not with 235s.........

I know the plastic center hubs are also different (even though they look the same).      So they may not fit correctly up front with the hubs up front if you use the 15 version on the 8 wheel.

If the offset is -15 for the 1st gen wouldn't they make the rims stick out further considering the mounting surface would be further back?

I really don't think you are going to have too much tire sticking out with any of the stock wheels.

I added roughly an inch and a half per side to my rear end when I swapped to a different rear end, and honestly, if I didn't have side by side pictures of it I wouldn't notice. It still stuffs the tire in the fender well. I really doubt you would  be able tell a 1/4 of an inch difference between the two. that is on the rear of a 1st gen 4Runner
