Marlin Crawler 6th Annual KOH Thread (Feb 2012)
« on: Feb 08, 2012, 02:59:47 PM »
UPDATE: Full report from the event posted here!

KOH updates are long over due so here they come!! This year's King Of The Hammers will be our 6th entry into the event. Including the first year's pre-run KOH group, we are very proud to be amongst only 2 or 3 remaining teams who have completed all 5 events, a true testament to the reliability of Marlin Crawler products! :_order: :turtle: :_order:

Now on to the updates! These are all coming from our team driver John (desertoy), posted over the last couple of weeks:

Quote from: desertoy
Well, this will be my 6th KOH. We sold the Formula Toy after the 2010 race. Last year I did some major upgrades to my X-Chassis and raced it.
Here's the prep thread from last year. http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?t=893262
This year the plan is to race my X-Chassis again. It was pretty much ready to race. But I thought, heck, I've always wanted to turbo charge a Toyota motor, so I started doing a little research and found out that a 3RZ is a great motor to boost. I found a website called CustomTacos.com. This is where all the crazy Turbo Tacoma guys hang out. They were alot help in this build.

I started out with the most important mod you need to make before turboing. HEAD STUDS along with a good aftermarket head gasket is something you have to do. I got everything I needed from my friends at LC Engineering.
Here's some random pics of the head stud install.

Next I had to cut and weld a turbo drain in the pan and tap the oil filter housing with a oil feed port.

I originally bought a complete turbo setup off of a Tacoma for $1500. It came with a T-3/T-4 turbo from Turbonetics, Blow off valve, waiste gate, turbo manifold, intercooler, variable boost controller, it also came with piping and exhaust to install it on a Tacoma.
I installed the turbo for moch up and found out that the turbo manifold made the turbo stick up really far. I would have to cut a hole in the hood to make it fit.
I wasn't really excited about this.

I ended up purchasing a new turbo manifold that would place the turbo a little lower.
I got this from a website called www.treadstoneperformance.com
I also ended up getting alot of turbo parts from www.frozenboost.com

The next thing I bought for this turbo install was the most expensive thing I bought during the whole project. It was also the coolest. something I have wanted for the past 10 years.

It's a Synchrowave 250DX with a pulser kit.

I already have upgraded fuel pumps and an engine management system. All I had to do was upgrade the injectors and swap the map sensor to one capable of handeling boost.
I also installed an additional set of gauges to monitor the turbo system. The gauges include Boost pressure, exhaust temp, air/fuel ratio, and water injection flow (more on this later).

As you probably already figured out, I didn't install the intercooler that came with the turbo. The reason is, it wouldn't fit. I just didn't have any room to put it.
So I did a little more research and decided to install an Aquamist water/methanol injection system. This is just another way to cool the pressurised air. The addition of methanol will also act as a knock inhibitor.

The bad part of this system is, it is kinda complicated.

Once I got everythign installed and got the motor to start, I took it to LC Engineering to have it dyno tuned. Gabrial is the dyno guy there. He's like a mad scientist with the SDS fuel management system.

Lst year when I first installed the 3RZ it put 100hp to the rear wheels. It was a night and day improvement over my old 22re.

This year, at 10psi of boost it put 160 HP to the rear wheels and 186 ft/lbs torque. It truely hauls ass.

The car is at Impact Signs in Victorville today getting the new roof wrapped and a couple new sponsor stickers.
Marlin Crawler would like to welcome:
AMSOIL
GOODSPEED RACING FUEL
ALLTECH MOTORSPORTS

to our list of valuable sponsors. THIS WOULD NOT HAPPEN without their support.

Here's a couple fuel pics. the sticker is on the side of my semi trailer.

Back to the race prep. Last year I had Anzo LED lights kinda set into the front visor. they didn't work very good at all. The main reason is, they lit up the hood soo much, I couldn't see anything else.
So this year I decided to build a light bar with a lower visor to block the light. I also added a couple 4" HID's to see out further.

Well, everything is pretty much normal for the week leading up to race week.

The IRC satelite tracker mount is somehow lost in the mail.

my car is getting new sponsor logo's put on it and it's going to take an extra day.

Walker Evans hasn't got my spare wheel done yet.

I keep thinking of little things I forgot to do.

I found out yesterday that Poly Performance is hooking us up with Black Cat race cathiders though. That more important than you think.

The car is STILL at Impact Signs. I'll pick it up on my way home today.
It's as ready as it's going to get.
Mike Hendricks and I will tweak on it a little during the week. Then I'm just going to race the pregnant dog and see what happens.
The only thing i'm still a little worried about is the Exhaust Temp is still alarmingly high. But I've tried everything and I cant get it to run cooler (It's runs 1250 to 1350deg). If I can't get it down by next Friday, I'm going to unhook the gauge.

You guys can keep track of "Team Marlin Crawler" on IRC's website with our satelite tracker. Please use this cause it was expensive and I want to get some payback on it.

Next Post will be........................The Race Story.

those looks like 295cc 7mge injectors, those should be good for 240-260 hp on a 4cyl

Nice job, BigMike!  Curious to hear how your EGTs are when you're on it for an extended time.   Cool system, but yeah that is a little involved.

Hey sf, I believe they are 290cc 5S-FE injectors from a MR2/Celica

Thanks esh but the credit goes to desertoy, Mike Hendricks, freds40, and the rest of our crew,  & not me!! 8) :clap2: I know the EGTs were reading high but they got it dialed in before the race. I don't have any numbers myself on it..

Regards,
BigMike

To answer your question, the EGT's are through the roof. At 85mph, 4th gear, 4000rpm I was letting off the gas because the EGT gauge was reading 1550. I have been playing with fuel and timing for the past month trying to get the exhaust temps down. I even cut 4feet out of the exhaust. Nothing I have done has made a difference at all. I was convinced the gauge is a couple hundred degrees off.

Any suggestions?

Here's the other funny part. I averaged 3.5MPG. This did not change with the addition of the turbo. I averaged the same last year. The stock V-8 rigs were averaging 7-10MPG.
