Here's a tire/tail gate I just got done making for my yota. Came out pretty sweet. I ended up using 1.5" tube. Would do it again in a heartbeat if I had a chop saw and a notcher

I did this all the cutting and notching by hand.....

I made it the be mounted this way. I'm sure if my brackets are straight, then I don't see why you couldn't mount this as an outie
