WillyNilly 2.0- Making a comeback
« on: Sep 22, 2011, 08:30:48 AM »
I know I have been gone for quite a while, hopefull some of the older folks here remember me.  Anyways I have been gone due to my jeep/shop fiasco here in 2009/10.  And since then its all settled down, I graduated grad school, started up my own practice, got myself a house with a shop and I am going to start over on Willy Nilly!

I havent been a total 4x4 looser since I was last on, I did mannage to build a pretty cool little red wrangler heres the album for the build.  I did build a race truck also but I didnt take any picutres as I went, its a stock class ranger, I will try and get a pic of the final product.

http://s60.photobucket.com/albums/h13/spencer66hwt/Lil%20Red%20Wagon/

and a picuture of the final product.  I wheeled it once a week at least during my whole last year of school... Great way to clear the head!  Swapped in an OD auto, built a lowmax dana 300, did alloyed nine locked, and dana 44 locked, hydro-assist steering, 37in pitbull rockers on beadlocks, built fenders, sliders, and bumpers with a tubing bender I made...  (that was handy) and the end result----- 14in ori struts up front 14in fox air shocks rear.

So those of you who dont know the project run down, this rig started as a bone stock 53 Willys Jeep, I lifted it farm boy style wheeled it till it wouldnt run then started the rebuild.

and in the background you can get the gist of how I got it back

I dont want to spend alot of time in the past, the short is I am tearing it down and starting from scratch.  Heres the specs Im going for.

Tune port injected 350
atlas 4 speed
turbo 400
14 bolt rear shaved with discs
dana 60 front shaved and air locker
Tube chassis
Ori struts 16s on one end 14s on the other
22inch belly height on 42in tsl's
116in wheel base
7inches of up travel

I have all the parts but the alloys for the front, the locker for the front, and the turbo 400, other then that I have everything for the build including the tubing, 1.75in dom.  and the rock rings for the outside.

So far what I am doing is breaking things down I got the centers cut out of the hummer rims and the new centers pressed in and trued.    Hope to have the new tires mounted up this weekend and on rollers so I can start designing the chassis.

Day 1 Deconstruction

The end result should look like a willys on steroids, it will be wider, will have aluminum skins.  I will be taking my time making sure things are perfect and hope to have the chassis, axles, and wheels powder coated next spring.  So it will be a bit slow of a build, critique me as I go cause when the powder goes on I hope to have a rock solid rig!

Thanks Dave good to be back. I hope to have it done by next spring.  Im taking my time making everthing just how I want it!

I got a designated shop night and got quite a bit done, got the axles out and mocked up, and got the rim centers ground out clean, and put the new centers in.. making those true is a bit of a process but it went pretty well.  Hope to have the old cage and body off this weekend and then get the drive train pulled and put in the mock up position.  Anyways heres the pics.  I am sure glad to be building around those tires instead of trying to fit them in a rig, ive never dealt with tires that big.

Anyways heres the pics from last night, had to throw the tires up, and put a few chairs in and imagicrawl for a bit!

Ended up wide awake at 3 am this morning so i went to the shop and finnished welding in all the centers  mounting the 42s on the rims and mounted them on the axles.  it only took me till 6:40 LOL....  But I did get a final width of 86in up front and 84 in the rear.  And got all my measurements for turning so I can start tube work this weekend on the lower chassis.  Definatly want to be able to turn clock to clock without interferance with anything.  Definatly alot easier to accomidate when your building from scratch then it has been on past rigs.

K I will see if i can track down the old pictures.

Jade is a pitbull boxer mix,  shes awesome!

Heres what I got done last night, pulled out the plasma and went to town got it ready to put up for mock up.  hope to start on the chassis next week sometime.  Sorry the pics are fuzzy their cell phone pics i a garage with all the doors and windows shut  after 45minutes of running the plasma!

This is the rear section representing almost 800lbs right there in those two pieces!

And the middle section their buch lighter at almost 125lbs for those little pieces cut from the transmission to the motor on each side

and last but not least the front bumper.. representing some unknown ridiculous weight im sure

And heres how it looked after said event.  keep in mind that these are not at ride height their at full compression.

Tonight was designated shop night.  So I spent some time cleaning up and the rest of the time getting the rig mocked up so I could start building a chassis next week.  So here are the pics.

Side shot rig at full compression, belly height 12 inches wheel base at 112 inches.

Heres just a shot from the back showing the engine clearance.

Heres how much engine clearance I have at full stuff its about 4 inches from the motor and 1 inch from the bottom pulley

So didnt get much time in the shop today,  but i did get  a outline for fourlink mapped out and started bending up the chassis.  got my first tube bent out and it came out just like I hoped.

I dont know if I showed you guys my bender 2.0

I have used it before with good luck but this is the firs time I have bend long paralell rails,  and at the bend I ended up at 29inches, and at the end I ended up at 29.75in.  Not too shabby since I use a saw blade to determine my angle.

Heres the pic with the bent piece sitting in there.

and one with the grill sitting in its new spot

Alright so thurs night shop night is going strong.  Heres what I got done today.  Got the d-train hoisted and in its properish place, got the axles squared up, got the rear wheel wells rolled and bent the upper portion of the cab....  also got the front bumper stripped of sway bars an winch gear, and the old skid plats off and stripped down.

Heres the rolled wheel well and the upper cab

and another angle

and from the front.

I am not sure if I am thinking too big but the cab outside to outside right now is 63in wide. which is 4inches wider than my wrangler body but it just barely covers the tires which is important to keep it street legal.  The qustion is this going to be uber wide on the trails.   its still 23inches narrower than the track width?

Ok so im gearing up for a big day in the shop on thursday most of my gear to get fabing will be in early this week.  Got to start off today with a gift from ruff stuff.  I knew what I was ordering but had no idea the magnitude of these things till i pulled them out of the box today...

I know none of you guys know me but I have some pretty big hands, these things are impressive.

Got excited about the new parts so with the wife out of town I took a torch and grinder and got the axles cleaned of old brackets and paint and ready for the new suspension to go on.

also built this table for my cousins gym... will be painted black and have a glass top on it.

and a friend got me these lights for millitary hummers their pretty awesome

and got the new tranny all mounted up, got the atlas mounted and clocked level which really improved my rear driveline angles allowing me to angle down the whole d-train...

With all the excitement of new parts I took my son to the shop and taught him how to mark and bend tube, he did half of this.  I also taught him how to put in 5min of hard work and then spend 15min staring and admiring what you have done...

Thats funny. im going to have to quote it in my sig.
"Never make your passion your occupation. it will loose it's luster and become work. that's why i never wanted to become a gynecologist!"

Well I almost didnt use my shop night, i was bummed out about something that happened at work and didnt feel like doing anything.  Then i ended up on you tube watching tim cameron videos and ended up in the shop, but only for about an hour.  I was glad I got out  I got the two lower frame rails bent up and the outter pieces of the floor/body.  I hesitate to show pics cause I dont want you to be jelouse of my high end equipment I have for holding things in place  but here we go anyways.

The precision chair

And the level

The block of wood

Anyways everything is all bent going to get it notched and tacked together so I can put some seats in and start planning the cage.

A pic with the lights my friend leeland donated to my project!  Some very cool H1 lights.

Got the frame marked cleaned and tacked the floor piece to it.

Checked turning clearance (2.25inches) at full stuff full turn which in theory will let me jump to a 44 in tire without clearance issues.

and with the frame set back on there got to mock the rear wheel well back in too see what it will look like at full stuff.

My frame clearances are about 4inches at full stuff but I dont have enough suspension to articulate it and see if there will be issues with flex.  But I may move the floor piece forward in front of the tire so if I decide to go rear sear some time I only have to put a steering axle in and not redoe some of the body...

I ended up with a 54in body width, thats 4inches narrower than my jeep body and without sliders like my wrangler its 12in narrower

I got in my springless high steer, not bad for a hundred bucks.  I didnt have them drilled for heims because I am going to put in a plate to mae them double shear and box them in and it will be easier to drill through both when its done

And i scored an air compressor on cl last night 175 for a 220 volt. the guy says its an 80 gallon I not sure but it sure pumps out some air.

so with a few hours of shop time I got some of it put together

here is the front truss mostly welded up (they forgot to ship the two passenger side pieces to it so that keeps me from getting any farther on the front till next week some time.

Front truss on the axle

Front truss with ram mount and skid.

a better pic of the skid

the rear truss is completly welded up, just have 15 more minutes to finnish weld part of it to the axle and it will be done

and with the pinion guard and bridge.

I will have the rear truss finnished today and the front skid and hopefully the four link tacked in the rear
Life is too short!!!   Do something with it!!!
