2RZ in an '82
« on: Sep 18, 2011, 07:04:52 AM »
Yes, plans for a 2RZ swap into my '82 truck to replace the 22r/weber setup in front of my A340F-dual cases is coming together.  I found a good deal on a '96 Tacoma that a guy is parting out. So I bought the engine with all the accessories, includes the PS pump, complete wiring harness front to back with everything that goes with it, fuel tank and lines, exhaust, and the tilt steering column. It even has an A/C compressor so I can setup OBA, sweeeet. Pics on the swap to come in the next few months(too busy to do it any quicker). Oh, I still have to get it all pulled from the Taco first. Oh' I don't want to hear anything about getting a 3RZ instead-I picked this motor for a reason.
Here's what I'm starting with-locked front and rear-dual cases-blah, blah, blah, it works.

I finally made it home with the engine. Yeeeeehaaaaa!

More cool stuff in the mail from Chilkat Designs, T100 oil pan.

The motor mounts from Chilkat Designs installed. These maybe show some real quality.

Pulled all the '82 wiring out, installed the '96 body wiring, may it was so easy, bolts right up, retrofits right on. Next thing to do is get the Taco instrument cluster to fit in the '82 dash, also will finish filling holes the previous owner cut in the dash, you know clean it up a bit. One neat thing was the Taco harness grommets fit the existing firewall holes perfect. I was impressed, and pleased I didn't have to try to cut bigger holes. Still have to cut a hole for the ECM wiring but that's just a simple 2" hole on the passenger side and a couple studs or nuts to weld to the body to hold the bulkhead fitting.

Had to make a new mount plate for the Taco wiper motor, figured a 3/16" aluminum one would be a good choice. PIcs show old setup and new, had to swap arms. And then all plugged in!

Wow, liking this!  Why not just put the Taco dash, complete in your 1st gen?

Too much plastic and not really layed out right for what I have already in dash, like my GPS and winch controls. The first gen dash is steel, easy to weld, grind and repair, even a little body filler to make it look nice if needed.

Yep, the metal dashes are hard to beat.  Looking forward to seeing this all finished.  Nice work.

Tacoma fuel tank mount on drivers side-DONE! Next is cut a hole in the bed for fuel filler tube, (small detail) then do the final tank install and run the fuel lines, did a test fit with the Taco lines. Yes I ran them in from the front clear to the tank, sweeeeeet.

Had to notch the cross member a little, I just welded back in the piece I cut out up a couple inches.

Rear tank bracket between frame rails.

Well a 2RZ has more horsepower per liter (I did the math)  :gap: than any of the other Toyota 5VZ or 3RZ motors, and the low boost non-intercooler turbo option make it a perfect choice. The dollar per HP spent makes it a bargain, IMHO, others may disagree but it's my baby. :disturbed:
Thanks I can't wait to get it rolling.

Slow night, got the new throttle cable installed, did a bunch of wiring research for the few loose end to wire in. Made a to do list today, maybe 20 items on it to finish. This weekend will be busy I hope with most of the major stuff knocked out. Then the list will be getting shorter and rewritten again, then probably a couple more times after that.

Made a filler for were the old dip stick was, and made a new plate and tubes for the filler neck to connect too. I'm using an EFI tank filler neck on the Taco tank.

2" out of the stock Taco down pipe and a little rotated toward the motor and presto, exhaust. Now I need to get the exhaust fromt there back connected, should be fairly straight forward since I don't have to do a crossover and the gas tank is out of the way. Pretty much like the 22R exhaust just on the opposite side.

The State of Washington, right on the Idaho border, just north of Oregon. So the real SE-WA. No one else live near here, I'm all alone in the middle of nowhere.

Slow week, so far. But the cool thing was about a year ago I helped a freind part out a couple cars, a Caddy w/Northstar and an Olds Aurora with the battery under the back seat, sooooo I snagged the 6ft long battery cable out of it. Now this week while wandering around the shop in a daze I spotted a batery cable in a pile of stuff(I may a bit of a horder) anyway it was perfect length to reach from the battery to the 2RZ fuse box. I bought a junction stud to connect everything to, the pics show it all connected and the junction stud I used and its routing.

More on the exhaust, custom billet CNC machined O2 bung, and some interior work, Taco gauge cluster and a new cup holder for the passenger, stupid vent kept falling out anyway.
