arp hub studs
« on: Aug 09, 2011, 01:59:29 PM »
So i had a buddy that drove through fresno last week and was makeing a stop to get some parts.  i asked him to get me some arp hub studs from tg :disturbed:.  along with the arp knuckle studs.  I went to go put them in and looks like the made the head on the stud on the wrong side.  here is a link to the issue... http://pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?t=992779 ...  I put the studs in with the head in instead of head out so that it would get more bite on the hub body.  but now I have people telling me to turn them around and run the short threads in, and others telling me to leave it.  wish I would have done a bit more research on it and bought from brian at FROR instead and not have to deal with this issue :smack:.  please read the post on pirate and let me know what you think.  this is the only tg part i have on my truck besides the hydro assist kit.   I installed the tg arp hub studs in backwards from the way they are suggesting you put them in.  just want to hear your guys opinions on installing them backwards or the with the short threads in. thanks in advance for the replies

here is a picture from the link on pirate for referance to what i'm talking about...

I'd leave em. To me having to put in extra washers to take up the gap is just silly for something that was supposed to be designed as an upgrade. I know it's too late now, but I have the FROR ones and haven't had an issue.

so you guys think i'm ok leaving them in the way i did it, with the hex head in the hub?  i'll just leave it i guess and hope i never break them.  i can't imagine trying to drill and easy out them if they shear off.

i just can't believe they made the studs with the head on the wrong side.  i was half way tempted to put the stock studs back in and send them back.  it was really disappointing to see.  but i figured they went in the way the stock ones did, but with the hex head on it.  I guess we'll see how they hold up at the roundup.  if anyone see's me broke down, you'll know why  :rivers:

FROR sell a none-jacked up set. Just FYI.

.......... wish I would have done a bit more research on it and bought from brian at FROR instead and not have to deal with this issue :smack:

It does not matter which way you install them, they work fine either way as long as the shoulder bottoms into the hub before the stud end bottoms in the hub. The nuts are the problem, they are the wrong grade..

I have no idea what the size and pitch are, as far as grade I would go with an 8.8 but would try and find some 10.9 grade, maybe a bit overkill but that is what I do.

thread pitch is m8x1.25. i used my old nuts, and with metric hardware its class, not grade.

i stripped 2 of the nuts out already that came with the kit.  i have the factory toyota ones that are 25 years old and they torqued down fine.  maybe i'll swap them out for the factory ones instead.  thanks

What is the point of getting highgrade studs and weak bolts? This defeats the point.

i guess i'll get down to the local hardware store and pick some up.  the stock nuts tightened down just fine without stripping so i figured they were ok  :dunno:.

it's irritating that i have to go out and buy new hardware for this when it came with hardware.  not to mention the studs made with the on backwards.

Their supplier sent them the wrong nuts and I guess they did not check them, they say they are a grade 2 but there is no such as a grade 2 metric nut.

I think all you have to do is give them a call and they will send you the right class nut, or go to a hardware store and buy some. Using the stock ones is fine also, they are the right class.

I am not a big fan of TG either, but mistakes do happen.

i don't know?  i tightened them down to 17lbs.  i can't find a set of torque specs for it.  some say 12, some say 20, what is it supposed to be?
maybe the stock ones will work lose over time from the threads stripping away?  i'm really not sure  :dunno:

Not a lot of hardware stores carry 10.9, I get all of my 10.9 hardware at a fastener store. If you are using the stock nuts, I would not worry about it.

what are you guys torqueing them down to, not inside the hub, but where the hub body torques down onto the cones and washers?

I agree mistakes happen, but when most places find they built something upside down they would fix it before selling it?

Its more important to torque the studs then anything.  If you dont get the studs tight enough they will not break but rip the threads out.  On hub studs I would torque them to 20 and then the nuts to the same.
