Need your opinion and experience with 4.7's
« on: Jan 27, 2011, 02:49:35 PM »
Background Info/ Reason Why I am posting:

I don't have enough money for a dual set up because I know it will give me all the options I need. And If I do get enough money I will still need to get the 4.7 trans or crawl box so I might as well switch to a single 4.7 transfer case.

Ok guys I have read big mike's post, http://board.marlincrawler.com/index.php?topic=4310.msg38627#msg38627, and it's a no brainer to go MC. My problem is that I'm wondering if I should switch from 2.28 to 4.7?

According to big mike 4.7 gears are weaker than 2.28 due to more teeth on a same diameter ring. The only reason I am wondering about the strength is because I ride on a lot of soft sand. When riding sand (with my 2.28 transfer case and 4.88 3rd), the best driving is in 2nd gear and 5000 rpm. I sometimes go in the mountains and want the option of the 4.7 ratio giving me a drive ratio of about 90.7 in 1st gear.

Theoretically I will be able to get around the same ratio with a 2.28 transfer case in 2nd gear compared to a 4.7 transfer case in 4th gear. Will this work in reality due to the engine having to first turn 4th gear and then going through the transfer case?

Drive Ratios w/ 4:88 3rd's
Front             Rear   1st   2nd   3rd   4th   5th
1.00:1   1.00:1   20.9   11.3   7.3   5.3   4.5
2.28:1   1.00:1   47.7   25.8   16.7   12.1   10.2
1.00:1   4.70:1   98.3   53.2   34.4   24.9   21.1

Two final questions:

Will a 4.7 transfer case handle a constant 5000 rpm rev?

Will it work well on sand? Has anyone else use their 4.7 to ride on soft sand?

Some pics so you guys know what I'm working on.
Thanks ahead for any help.

You should not be at 5k rpms constantly. That is so hard on your engine, trans, t case, rear and front end. Sure they can take it for a bit, but I wouldnt be worried about the case. Power comes on its best right around 4200 IMO. I have 4.7s in a truck, single case. Its cool for crawling. If you wanna have momentum, its not the best choice at all, IMO. The distance between gears is sho short, by time you shift it loose stuff, you have lost half your speed. They work fine for crawling and I just use 4th gear when i wanna move, but its still slow.

Thanks for your input. It's good to know that you have 4.7's. I forgot about losing momentum until you brought it up. I lose momentum going from 1st to 2nd with my stock transfer case, I couldn't imagine what a 4.7 would do. When I hold it at 5K is only for around 5 minutes and my dad and I built it to rev higher with stiffer valve springs and a full rebuild, but it is hard on all the components.

I've got dual cases, 2.28 in the front and 4.7 in the rear case. I do good mix of everything. Driving, Dirt roading, crawling and snow wheeling. In the snow I've used either the 2.28 or 4.7 pretty regularly but not both. Honestly for an "All around rig" i'd go with duals first. Then you have the option of of low or low low.

i'd suggest a wider tire and 5.29's

I have been pumping 200+hp into my 4.7's for years now, and they hold up fine.  About 9 years my Marlin gears have held up to abuse, even at high RPM's. Thanks Marlin.

Thanks for the input. With all this help I decided to save money for duals. A lot of people seem to be saying that there's no momentum with the 4.7 so it just wouldn't be appropriate for riding on soft sand and occasionally going into the mountains.

I have a single 4.7 case it is low but you still have all five transmision gears to choose from. I can start out in fifth gear though. I would go duals. I can't wait till I have dual ultimates and get my 2.28 back.

4h and toyota dont mix well, at least none ive driven. 4.7s are cool, I can brake stand 36s in 1st lo at idle, and it will not stall, tached out in 4th barely registers on my speedo, it just bounces. Like others have said, re gearing your difs, and trying a dif tire would probably be your best bet.

u guys r the bomb. but sparkplug is true about 4h because wen i try to start in 4h in the sand it bogs really hard. i guess the only way to go is duals! ill have all the options i need. i just need to fork up for balanced drive shafts because of the higher rpm driving i do. any ideas on home made balanced drive shafts? or is it impossible? Maybe modify stock drive shafts because i know the front driveshaft has to be longer and the rear has to be shorter. cutting the female and male side?
