Can't Find 16.5" wheels- 6 Lug wheels
« on: Aug 19, 2010, 10:29:10 PM »
I just bought some new 38.5x16x16.5 TSL's, and they are mounted on 8 lug Ford rims.  I Hope to put these on my toyota, but it seems like nobody makes a 16.5 wheel that is 6 lug.  I did find a company that will custom make the wheels, but they are kinda spendy.  Any one have any ideas?

Stockton wheel will make any wheel you want.  Or pro-comp sells one.
http://www.4x4groupbuy.com/store/procomp-xtreme-rock-crawler-series-165x825-4inch-p-1268.html

But seriously, a 16.5" bead tire, you will need bead locks for sure.  Cause a 16.5 wheel has no bead lock bump to hold it in place.  Only air pressure is used to hold the tire on the wheel.

I would have never bought them.   :shake_head:   Cause now you have to get an abortion job of a wheel just to use them with the hopes that you don't loose a bead everytime you air down.  Sell them off, and get the right tire you need.

You can do some recentered H1 wheels, but the tire industry is doing away with the 16.5 tire.  Everything is going 16, 17, 18, & 20" wheels now.

I am starting to think I messed up.  I should have known there was a reason they were so cheap.  Seams odd that a 16.5" tire has such a hard time keeping a bead, when a 16 or a 17" holds just fine.  Is it the tire, or the wheel that is the problem? It sounds like it is the wheel that does not have a "bump" on the bead to keep it in place.  Is the only solution to get bead locks, and if do you need to get the double bead locks?  Does this even solve the problem?  Sounds like I should just sell them off.

6 lug 16.5 wheels are rare.... i have seen some chevys with em...

Its a bit of work...  but it does work.....

http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?t=340906

or

http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?t=289706

when it comes to the 16.5 bead...
where the tire meets the rim they sit in a valley sort of like  rim (|) . tire (__) . safety bead (/\)    inner part of wheel (\)

|
| __          <- 16.5 rim
       \

|
| __  /\  <- not a 16.5 rim
           \

does that make sense..... its sort of hard to describe and i cant find pics...

BTW These tires are 16.5x9.5 with 35 14.5 boggers on em and i had em down to single digit pressures in sand, mud, rocks never had em come off...

if your in oregon, and still want to get rid of em..... let me know.... i could buy em

look on craigslist.  you can find them all over.  right around $200 for a decent set.  I made the same mistake, ended up buying a set of 16.5x9.75 stocton wheels new, paid a bit over $400 for them almost 10 years ago, sold them a few years back for $100 to someone on the board.

16.5 doesnt have a safety bead, like most do. you can run a chevy wheel. there are tons of options. procomp was big on 16.5 wheels for a long time, as was weld racing.....

Thanks for the info guys.  I think I will keep my eyes open for a set of 16.5 wheels, and at the same time try to sell the Tires and wheels.   If I sell them before I find the right wheels, then I will just move on to find something with a 15" wheel.

i would probably try to go with a 17''.  tires are starting to get a bit limited for the 15's.  once my tires are gone, i'm going to sell my 15's ang go 17's so i can still get the tires i want. just my  :twocents:

This is a very good point, the industry is leading away from the 15", 16.5", and it is becoming a thing now that the tires we want to run are in 17" or bigger wheel diameter size.  So, what I would do is to look at your future in offroading.  How long do I want to keep doing the very technical and challenging stuff?  If I ruin a tire what is available when I'm away from home?  And etc. and see where you want to put your money at.  If you want to wheel a long time into your future, and the industry is doing away with the now oddball tire sizes, maybe it's time to invest into the future, say 17" or 18" wheels and tires.  Cause I don't want people go out and invest in something now, and have all their money tied up in oddball sizes, and then put out more money to get back into the standard later on.  It boils down to, do you want to spend $ on wheels twice or once?

About halfway down is a picture of what a 16.5 vs a 16" tapered wheel looks like.  http://www.toyojapan.com/tire-technology/wheel-rim/  Great page to read on wheels and tires.

This is a very good point, the industry is leading away from the 16.5"

True, bfg no longer makes at least the a/t in 16.5, and has likely discontinued others.

BFG's website shows All Terrain T/A KO in 33/12.50-16.5 and 35/12.50-16.5..... but that's about it.

16.5s are definitely a dying breed. If I ever wear out my 33s, I'll be shopping for 16" wheels.  :gap:

Weird, word on the playground is they're discontinued, or maybe I took it wrong and they were to be discontinued.

I thought maybe America's Tire no longer carried them (figuring they are on the way out) but their website still shows them so :dunno:

The site is flawed in that it only shows what's in stock currently.  Good for searching for something like this, but if you want to look into all possible options it leaves you hanging.

In the seven years I was in the tire industry, there was a huge selection of 16.5" tires, and by the time I left, it was fading away.  There was a point in time, when alot of 1 ton vans and trucks were running the 8.75/9.5-16.5" tire size.  Cause at one point in time, that was the standard for really heavy loads.  Hence, the 6 lug wheels with the 16.5" wheels.

A budy went to 4wheelparts and bought a set (4) for little over 500. It's a little steep if you ask me.

Treadwright here is South Dakota is retreading 37x12.50R16.5 that they sell for $205.00. The only thing I can think is that they are using the old carcasses of Goodyear Wrangler MT's that the military once used on the Hummer. I have seen these same tires for sale on the Internet for $99. That’s a great price for a tire of that size but someone here made a good point of getting a replacement easily if you trash one. I have seen 315/75R16 and 315/70R17 (35" equivalent) retreads selling for as little as $157.00 my problem has been finding inexpensive 16 and 17 inch 6 lug rims that would fit a tire of this size. I.E. 16x8 or 17x8 aluminum. I have seen some nice FJ rims for cheap on ebay but stock rims only come as wide as 7 inch. Has anyone run a 12.50 wide tire on a rim this narrow? If so what was your experiences, pro/cons?
