getting a tooth pulled. Its out and pictures.
« on: May 17, 2010, 08:29:37 PM »
So I have to get a tooth pulled next tuesday. Its gonna cost between 199-350. I don't have dental insurance so does that seem like a fair price? How bad is the pain. I've never had a tooth pulled before, this tooth ache is the worst pain I've delt with, I have 7 tattoo's and have broken my collarbone, wrist, ankle, few fingers and toes. I'm just wondering what I'm in store for with this. Any one got any advice?

Right now I'm on amoxicillin and vicodin for pain and stuff the dentist gave me today. They also told me I can rinse my mouth with wiskey for a minute or use warm salt water. I'm going with the salt water as the thought of having jd or something in my mouth for a minute would just make me probably yack.

Any one got any home remidies to make the pain less intence?

Have you tried baby teething tablets? Crush the tablet on a spoon with a little bit of water & put it directly on the tooth.

For now you are gonna have to tolerate the pain.  As for getting the tooth removed, that is no biggie.  Let me take that back.  Which tooth is getting pulled?  If it's your wisdom tooth and its impacted, that may be kinda fun.   Sometimes, they have to bust it up to get it all out.  But a standard pull is nothing.  They numb you up, and then yank.  There will be some slight discomfort afterwards, but nothing like the pain you have now.

for now yes I'm good with the pain aslong as these vicodins keep doing their job and tylenol pm for when I really can't sleep. I have not tried those baby tabblets I'll have to look for those tomorrow. I heard clove oil works but safeway did not have non so I just came home and been icing it.

Thanks for the support guys. I'll be much happier once this is gone. Oh and its the furthest back molar but they might have to take out the wisdom tooth I hope not.

Had 2 wisdom teeth pulled last year and never had any discomfort.  Just don't sneeze, cough or blow your nose and you'll be fine  ;)

My lower two were impacted, and had to broken up to remove.  And the top ones, had the roots in my sinus cavity.  And that was really weird having the blood clots break loose when I sneezed.  But I was knocked out when I had those done.  I've had enough dental work that I really hate sitting there while they are working on my teeth.

I had my wisdom teeth pulled about a month ago and it wasnt too big of a deal. They knowcked me out and gave me norco for pain afterwards. As long as I kept up on some sort of pain pill, even Ibuprofen I was ok after a few days. I hated not being able to drive because of the norco. Overall though even wisdom teeth werent a big deal. :twocents:

Also, Iv found a postive attitude towards it will help a lot.

They gave me a prescription for norco or vicoden, but all I did was take a few ibuprofin the first day and never felt a thing.  Never got the prescription filled cause I saw no point in it.

You can get it done cheaper by having it done at a dental school. Helps you, the students, and is done under close supervision.

I always get a GOOD prescription filled!!  Even if I don't need it at the time.  It's always nice to have a couple of those pills around for when you really are hurting.  I get pinched nerves in my left hip, and that is the only thing that helps.  But Dr. won't prescribe anything but Ibuprofen for that, and they don't do anything for me, except upset my stomach.

I've had 3 root canals and 6 cavities filled in the last 5 months.   The root canals were $1200 each and I have no dental insurance.   That's what I get for not going to the dentist for 12 years.  I'm still paying off the credit card.

all of my wisdom teeth had to be impacted, lower 2 were coming in horizontal along the back of my jaw (tiny mouth). definetly didnt feel good, but after the first day just took tylenol and rinsed with salt water.

if your cheek starts to swell or hurts put some ice on it and gently massage the sore spot, helped me alot.

It won't hurt as bad as the pain your in now.  When I had my two upper wisdom teeth pulled they knocked me out and I didn't feel anything.  After I got home I took or two pills and was fine after that.  It felt like someone had punched me in the jaw.  I've never had a normal tooth pulled, just the upper wisdom and a baby tooth which is different.

I would make sure your dentist has a lot of experience with wisdom teeth as it can go badly if they don't know what they are doing.

I had a root canal recently and it was more annoying than anything else.  My root had already died a long time ago, I remember the weekend when it did (I didn't know what was happening at the time), but I headed for the ER/Urgent care multiple only to have it stop hurting.  It was a couple of days of the worst pain I've ever felt and it would go 20 minutes on and 40-60 minutes off.  When it was hurting I would have agreed to just about anything to make it stop.

My advice is to avoid comedy movies during your healing process.  Dumb and Dumber made me bust a stitch with my wisdom teeth.

And, your lower teeth are more difficult than you uppers because they don't drain naturally.  I don't think you specified upper or lower.

Bottom line you hurt a LOT more now that you will then.

My wife just called a few minutes ago and asked, "What are you doing?"  My answer was finishing a post on Marlin about teeth.  Not really a common answer for me.  In any case, she is a PA and worked at a community medical clinic for several years recently.  She said that community clinics often have dentists associated with them that are setup to work with people without insurance.  You might be able to get a better price.  It could make a huge difference if your wisdom teeth need to come out.

As for a root canal for $1,200 without insurance, that's a great deal.  I paid over $900 with insurance.

its lower bottom left its a molar not a wisdom. Its a oral surgan I'm going to so they have quite a bit of experence. I tried to find dental schools and things to help people with out insurance. The closest one is in portland about 4 hours away from me so thats no good. I got money I was justg tryin to see if that was a good price. I'd rather not get a root canal because thats a big waste, you get old and loose teeth anyways. I'd rather honestly get all my teeth pulled and get dentures.

You really do not want to go in that direction if you don't have too!!If you you lose teeth you really need implants are the way to go, they have a great track record of over 97% still there  years after placement!! Good luck with your extraction of 18#.

i paid 700 cash to have two molars surgically removed

a regular extraction with just novacaine and pliers should be around $100

Well they wanted $650 to pull it knocking me out. I said I don't got that kind of money when you told me no more then $350 on the phone. I had $500 with me but I was not paying that much. So they gave me antibotics again some clindomicin or something like that till next thursday when it gets pulled out.

What really sucks about this is I live in a small town with 1 dentist who was booked till middle of june could not even get me in to perscribe me meds. So I went to a dentist 1.5 hours away 1 way. I've been there 2 times so about 6 hours of wasted driving and $88 a pop on dental visits $25 on meds and I have to go back again. So about $40 in gas also plus next visit of $250 is what they told me I got it in writing and had them put quote is good for 3 months signed by the dentist and front desk lady.
I'm pretty p.o. right now about them. but its hurting like no other and needs to come out.

Hopefully, it won't start hurting worse.  If you're still comparing cost vs. benefit for having it removed your tooth isn't hurting as much as it could.  When I had a root die a few years back I might have agreed to a chainsaw extraction if I was promised that it would make it stop hurting.

There are three levels of pain:

(1) Not Hurting
(2) Hurts but known fix isn't worth it so I'll just let it take care of itself
(3) Make it stop now!

got it out this morning. Got 4 shots. they let me get numb for 20 minutes. dr came in along with 4 assistants 2 to hand him tools, 1 to watch my blood pressure and one in the corner to watch the thing happen. He said your going to feel a slight pressure and that was about it. I felt a lil pinch and it took about a minute then he said tooths out gonna give you some stiches and you will be on your way. about 45 min total. Was not even as bad as I thought it would be.

Heres some pics not for the light hearted.

sorry for the cell phone quality. I'll get the digital out later when I'm feeling better. took 3 vicodin per doctors orders and been sleeping and dizzy for a while now pain is going away and the pain I got now is less then the pain the tooth was causing so I'm happy.
