The difference between an R150 and R150F?
« on: Nov 30, 2004, 08:20:11 PM »
Hey all,

I'm new to the board and to off-roading in general, but have driven a Toyota ever since I learned to drive. I've been contemplating an SAS somewhere down the line on my '89 1-ton pickup. It has the 3.0 V-6 and the R150 trans. If I were to go ahead and do the SAS, would I have to swap out the tranny for the R150F, or could I get away with using what I have? Any feedback would be appreciated.

Depending on what front differential you chosse, if you go with a stock Toy 8" (passengers side diff) or a D44 with a passengers side diff, then your stock drivetrain is fully compatible since your IFS is also passengers side diff.

As for the differences,
The bellhousings are different. R150F uses a bellhousing for a VZ-family engine and the R151F usea a bellhousing for a R-family engine and it has a hole at the bottom with a rubber plug, the R150F's bellhousing does not.
The tail housings are different. R150F uses a tailhousing with a boltpattern for the VF1A chain drive t/case and the R151F is for the RF1A chain drive t/case.
The shifter socket, selector, and selector shafts are also different between the two.
The output shafts are the same.
1st gear is different. R150F uses a 3.83:1 first and the R151F uses a 4.31:1 first gear.

That should about cover the differences until Marlin comes in here and really start throwing around some numbers :ack:

Thanks for the feedback so far. I asked this same question on the Yotatech forum and was told that I may be able to get away with using a tailshaft from an R150F because the R150 is virtually identical.

Oh wait, are we talking about a 2WD R150 and a 4WD R150F??

Man I've gotta take a break from the forum, im :hammerhead:

I would imagine that the tailhousing and tailshaft from the R150F (4WD) could be swapped onto a R150 (2WD) transmission if you wanted to convert the 2WD tranny into a 4WD..

'F' denotes 4WD in the R-series transmissions....

R150F = 4WD 3.0l 3VZ-FE & 3.4l 5VZ-FE V6
R150 =  2WD 3.0l 3VZ-FE & 3.4l 5VZ-FE V6

R151F = 4WD 2.4l Turbo 22R-TE
R151 = 2WD 2.4l Turbo 22R-TE
