87 extra cab "project parts truck"
« on: Nov 27, 2009, 07:18:28 PM »
well hello everyone I started a project 3 weeks ago. I got this for a parts rig then I decided I will just build it instead.

got the truck 11-8-09 looking like this drove it about 65 miles home in the rain on the back roads to my house.

I pressure washed the mud off and pulled it into the shop to start taking it apart

I gutted the cab and removed the wiring harness and saved anything that was still useable for me or someone else.

the cab on the frame and I put the suspension and axles back under it so I could move it around the shop easier.

so thats what have done so far. I would have a little more done but I was hunting for 4 days and not working on the truck. I also got a really nasty infection in my arm that took two doctor visits to get a medicine that worked after they cut into my arm to drain the gunk.

so my plans at this point are to lower it and fix the SAS that was done on it by the previous owner. The front shackle is done kinda wrong you can see that in the last pic. I am going to redo the front spring hanger to get it lower.

My plans are to install a dual case with a marlin 10 degree adapter.

I don't think I will have the money for a 4.7 gear set for a little while. So i might run the stock gears for some time.

I am going to be doing rears up front and chevs in the rear. I want to run a 37" tire with no rub issues.

I will build a flat bed and sliders for it.

feel free to give me opinions, suggestions and pointers. I have thick skin so feel free to poke fun at me if you want.

i geuss my qestion is how low are you going, and how far are you moving the axle forward, so you don't rub cuz there is a thread on the forum that shows the cab fire wall being trimed.  that you can do for more clearence.
also keep up the pics bro.     :beerchug:

I would like to have a low CG. To be honest I don't have a real number on how low I am going a guess would be 3" of lift and trimming as needed to clear 37's

I going to do the drill front perch pads gain a inch, put the springs forward a inch and then the rears up front should push the axle forward a little also. then I will cut as needed.

I will post more pics when I get more done

I got a little more work done lately that I need to update. I ordered a few items from marlin. I have a dual case adapter, a clutch kit and a clutch master cylinder, and some bushing and top shift keeper clip.

I cut off the front hanger the previous owner installed on the truck.

I also cut out the front factory thin cross member so I could install one that would be a little more heavy duty with a receiver for installing a hook.

I cut the front shackle mounts off that the previous owner also installed.

The new shackle tube installed in the frame.

I got my front springs built and ready. I  did some work on a local kids truck in trade for his used rear spring from his 87 toyota and his 81 toyota to build my new RUF springs.

his old springs

what is left over of his springs

The top spring is the spring that was on the truck and the bottom spring is the one that I put together for it.
My new springs

I used 1/4" wall tube and receiver tube to build my new front cross member do you think it would be strong enough for a receiver winch set up or should I just weld some plate on top and mount the winch that way? I would like to a receiver winch set up so I could use the winch on the rear also.

I would put a winch plate on it, its a pain lifting 125lbs of winch when your truck is standing on the back bumper. Plus its stronger. Nice lookin build man

X2 on that.  If you want a rear winch, get a 6k for the rear.

This looks nice! I like the nice clean start. That is what I am itching to do to my truck, with and 85 xtra cab frame!

I like the build, keep up the good, clean work!

Pz
92 xtra cab, with some stuff...

...why buy when you can build?

well I have my hanger installed and springs installed. I put the engine in and to get some weight in it to check my shackle angle.

1987 rear springs with 1981 rear springs mixed together to create this pack. I didn't do the axle relocation of one inch with the perch drilled like I planned because my pinion angle was bad.

Next up is installing my new marlin items. Thanks again Brendan

Then get the engine running and start on the rear suspension.

thanks for the compliment 84toy I like your extra cab the bed cut looks good. I have been kicking the idea around of doing a bobbed and cut bed because tube benders are so expensive.

hello everyone its been a while since I updated. I had to put the toyota on hold for a little bit due to work and getting a new puppy that I have been training. I decided to put a bed on the truck because I have been sinking all my money into paying off some bills. I would have liked to go with the tube bed plan but I couldn't make my self spend that kind of money on a good tube bender and then the tube, so I picked up a bed for cheap and bobbed it. I cut the tunnel out and lifted the trans and T-cases. I bought a budbuilt T-case mount and got that installed. I need to get a rear drive and start the fuel system next,

The rocker panel on the passanger side was smashed pretty bad so I cut out that area and welded in a new section. You can see in the last pic of the clearence that the Budbuilt crossmember gave me with the custom lift crossmember.

this is the new puppy that I have been training he's blue pit
