'93 Xtra Cab 4x4 w/ B05B Axle Code= 3.15 Gears!!!
« on: Nov 15, 2009, 03:24:51 PM »
I just bought a '93 truck. It doesn't run yet (bad rod in the engine), so I don't know how it drives. I was looking at the axle code on the VIN sticker; it reads B05B. I'm used to the old style code, so I had to look around to find a chart for this later coding scheme. Everything I've seen so far indicates that this translates to 3:15 gear ratio! I can't believe it. Since when did toyota make a 4x4 xtra cab, 3.0 V6 5spd with a gear ratio like that? -- Matt

Where is the VIN number on the frame of a '93 truck?  The VIN on the door jamb and at the base of the windshield match the one on the title.  The truck has a VIN that begins with 4T instead of JT like all my other older Toyotas. I've read that this makes a difference. -- Matt

3.15. Not likely. The term 3.Slow would take on new meaning. Check the second chart, way down the page for the new axle codes. BTW I'm in Wisconsin, the frame ID prolly rusted away a long time ago. You will notice that 4.30 is not listed. I think they substituted 3.15 for 4.30 by mistake (on the chart). -- Matt

I checked the frame number. It's nothing like a VIN number. My frame # is VZN110-N001996. -- Matt

Finally, at long last the mystery is solved. The guess I made in my post of - Nov 16, 2009, 05:41:07 PM - was spot on. I cracked open the dif today for the first time and, sure enough, 43 teeth on the ring gear and 10 on the pinion = 4:30:1. I am rebuilding the axle with new/used backing plates and a clean up and repaint of the housing. I can get my hands on a front axle assembly with 4:56 gears, So I am thinking of changing out this rear ring and Pinion for 4:56 as well. Or I could go with 4:88 gears. I am only running 32 inch tires right now and planning to stay with that size, or maybe go with 33s.

32's and 4.56's are doable, and you will notice a performance gain if you have been running the truck w/the 32's, however, if you are buying new gears, I would go with the 4.88's, better to be a little over geared and have the option of running 33's.
