98 Taco with a big SAC

« on: October 11, 2009, 05:11:26 PM »

Im totally a newbie to the 22r and its components. I took the shifters off because there was a huge leak. The tranny shifter had all bolts finger loose. The T case shifter had 3 different size bolts that where not holding either. Once I got the shifters off I notice more then just a gasket.

So I have decided to rebuild the shifters as best I can. I have attached pics, cause this thing was put together so funky and also wanted to make sure it goes back in correctly.

I am confused on the whole oil slinger, the tranny had one that was metal in between the gasket and shifter, the Tcase had one that was rubber. I have a list of parts that I have found on marlin's site except for the oil slinger from the tranny. Any advice would be of help!

http://marlincrawler.com/transmission/parts-upgrade/heavy-duty-shifter-seats

you will need a white one for the tranny and a blue one for your tcase

http://marlincrawler.com/transmission/parts-upgrade/shift-handle-boots
i think one of each

http://marlincrawler.com/transmission/parts-upgrade/heavy-duty-shifter-socket
and one of these, for the end of your tranny shifter

Is there an oil slinger for tranny and tcase? And what about all the bolts for drain and fill replacements and bolts for the shifters?

I think I am going to re paint the metal on these shifters, or crap the whole shifter! Shifter plate red, stick in black!

If I take the tranny shifter shaft out, is it just a clamp and spring in there? Should I disassemble it and put it back and add grease? Or replace anything in there?

Is there an oil slinger for both tranny and tcase like the one that came on mine? Or do I not need one of them?

Took the shifters apart for cleaning until I can get enough scratch together to order all the replacements for the rebuild. I just have 2 questions,

1. Whats a good method for removing the top long shaft of the shifter to put in the new shift handle boot?
2. Whats a good method for removing the shifter socket on the tranny shifter?

Pics of the cleaned tranny & Tcase shifters! They almost look new again! Smile

Also, the Oil Slinger that marlin sells, is a different shape then the one I am replacing. Not sure if its the right one. Look at the shape of the t-case shifter Vs the oil slinger, its not the same.

RF1A T-case Parts List

1.    Shifter Retaining Clip
2.    Oil Slinger
3.    Heavy Duty Shifter Seat, Forward Shift (BLUE)
4.    Boot, Transfer case Handle
5.    4 New Shifter Plate Bolts (No Link on site for these)
6.    All New Drain And Fill Plugs/Bolts (No Link on site for these)

G52 Transmission Parts List

1.    Heavy Duty Shifter Socket
2.    Heavy Duty Shifter Seats (WHITE)
3.    Shift Handle Boots
4.    4 New Shifter Plate Bolts (No Link on site for these)
5.    All New Drain And Fill Plugs/Bolts (No Link on site for these)
6.    Oil Slinger

I have a few basic questions:

I cannot find a replacement for the oil slinger that came on my G52 shifter.

The oil slinger for the RF1A T-case has one made of rubber, is Marlin's metal one replacing this the rubber one?

What is your recommendation for removing the shifter socket on the tranny shifter?

What is your recommendation for removing the top shifter shaft from the bottom half to replace the shift handle boots?

And last, what type of grease do you recommend when assembling all parts back together, and do i need to apply the same grease on the inside moving parts around the shifter forts and what not? Any help would be great!

Fred answered all the above questions. Thank you sir!

Alright, lets see if I can answer a few of your questions.

1. We do have oil slingers for the G52 if you need one.
2. The thin metal slinger we offer for the RF1A does replace the rubber one.
3. I always use my bench vise. Open the jaws to just wider than the ball. Turn the shifter upside down
4. For the shifter boot, if you lube (I use dish soap) the boot and pull down evenly it will stretch enough to go over the large part of the handle.
5. Marlin uses a high temp disc brake grease on our assemblies. Usually a bit of grease on the bearings and couplers is a good idea since they won't have lube on start up.
