Formula Toy #31/Re-building my '83
« on: Oct 30, 2004, 05:59:26 PM »
This will be the slow re-build of my '83 Toy. It had been complete, wheeled pretty well, and now it is back under the knife in a serious way. This definately won't be moving as quick as other builds (got a 6 month old daughter) but I'm still hoping to get at least 1 snow run before the end of the season.

This was it in July of this year. Best pic I have.

The replacement frame after bending the original. @ this point I've hacked all the old crap that was welded on, and a couple of excess feet hanging off the back.

This is the beginnings of my new front spring hanger. I'm using Marlin's 4" springs with a leaf or 2 removed. These move the axle forward 1" themselves, the new mount will move it another 5 1/2" forward.

This is the how it sits today. Haven't worked on it since the rain so it's a bit rusty. The spring eye mounts are about done, there will be a few gussets to the dropped section and it'll be cleaned up a bit more.

Another angle. The stock front crossmember was a bit tore up so I replaced it and beefed it up a bit. Also worked better with moving things forward this much.

The one colosest is going in the back. Got the one in back first but didn't want to deal with boring the spindles. The one in front has the spindles bored for 35 spline shafts already and it was free from a buddy so I figured I'd save myself some work and use this one.

60's front and rear?  Are they full width or cut down?  What coil springs are those?  Looks like this is gonna be a badass buildup.

Fullwidth 60s. The springs will be outboarded but with the shackles through the frame. 3" Rubicon Express TJ fronts. Wife's got a conference out of town in a couple of weeks so I might take a day off work just so I can get something done while my daughter's @ the sitter.

Again, the spring mounts are 5 1/2" forward, the stock rear mounts are under the body mount. BTW, there will be gussetts for these big dildos, just didn't want to chance waking Hazel with the harmonious sounds of the chop saw and 9" angle grinder.  :sleepy:

Got motivated with the little time I had. Ran out got the springs for the most part in there (still need to make the inside shackles) and threw the front under there.

I will have to check to see if I have any good ones on the computer when I get home. The bed was originally done kind of like Geiger's old yellow 1st gen. As time went on, it lost more and more material. In the pic @ the top, there is nothing over the tires and the deck is about 6" off the frame @ the highest point. A month or 2 later, the deck was lowered to the top of the frame and made rails about 6" up to retain the crap in the back. For tube I made a front bumper with a stinger, sliders, a main hoop over the cab, and some runners from the main hoop to the back of the bed. Never completed the exo with that setup but this one will eventually have a completed exo. I'll search for some pics.
