Picked up a 1980 long bed for $250!
« on: Jul 12, 2009, 08:02:11 PM »
I picked up this retired ranch truck for $250.  It has a bad clutch slave but other than that is tight and runs strong.  Only has 109K (allbeit pretty hard) miles on it.  The interior smelled like a filthy cowboy and a wet dog but after tearing out the carpet it smells alot better!

I've always wanted one of these early trucks in original condition and trim!  I'm going to lock up the rear, get some cheap 31" muds, sanitize things a bit and just drive it around.  Maybe some mild trail rides and camping duty...

Changed the oil and slapped on a new clutch slave from napa for $12 today and it disengages fine now.  Had the truck up to 80 on the highway this evening and it doesn't even have any bad vibrations or death wobbles!  This weekend I will change the gear oil out of everything, maybe take the doors off to keep cool and start daily driving it for a while.

We got the cool new "museum of the rockies" Montana license plates with a t-rex skeleton.  Now my boys are calling the truck "Rexy".

So I took it on it's first road trip, about 240 miles and got 20 mpg!  Pretty low geared with the 4 speed, 4.37s and 235s though.  I could keep up with traffic on the interstate but it was pretty wound out at 70.  Felt like 5.29s and 32s on a 5 speed truck.  I think some skinny 31 inch tires would put it about right...

Anybody have one of these early trucks with the 20r and power steering?  Wouldn't be a bad thing to do for wider tires if I can source the parts.

We are going wheelin'/campin' this weekend so just for kicks I slapped on the 34" swampers on beadlocks from my "superbeater" '81 trailblazer... and to my suprise the don't even rub at full lock!  They barely even rub at full stuff!  These older trucks really do have some good fender clearance compared to the newer pickups.
