How to make rear disc brakes with tacoma front rotors and 86-95 ifs 4 cyl or v6 calipers.

First u need to pull the rear axle shafts and remove the drum brakes.

everything came off really easy, just needed a 12mm and 10 mm wrench

next the backing plate needs to be removed, u can press off the axle bearing to get it off, but i dont need the backing plate anymore, so i cut it in half with a 4" angle grinder with a 1/8" cutoff disc.  and smacked the studs out with a hammer

now the axle shaft face (where the rim mounts)  doesnt fit inside the tacoma rotor, so u can send it to a machine shop, and have them turn it down.  or get after it with a gringer. it needs to be ground down till its level with the stud gasket.

after about 30 mins it finally fits.

then i mocked it up on a rear axle housing and it works great with the brackets that i already make.

this setup will need an adjustable proportioning valve to keep the rear from locking up before the front.

Have you checked the setup for interference between the caliper and rim? Or, were you planning to use a spacer or adapter, or some light grinding on the caliper? Also, where is the bleeder valve located on your mock-up? I couldn't tell from the pics.

Looks like it is going to be a really clean install. It's good to see the different setups that can be used to do this. Thumbs Up

the caliper that is on there is actually for the other side, but it was just for mockup.  the bleeder valve will be on the top side.
and there wont be any interference with the caliper and rim without wheel spacers.

This pic scares me.  Is the typical setup to us 2 nuts to space out the spacer?

You are going to need a big MC to work those.

the 2 nuts can be replaced with a spacer.
as for the master cyl. i dont know, im not running this setup yet.  to  make it work, its gonna need a manual proportioning valve.  but i will try it with a 1" master with a dual diaphram booster.

I'm running the v6 calipers and  vented rotors up front and Chevy rotors and Eldorado calipers in the rear with a 10lb residual valve  and 1" MC and it just gets the job done.

cool, i just like to keep it all toyota and with parts that are easy to find.
i do have a set of rear calipers off a supra that i could also make fit, but they are gonna be harder for the average person to find.

I'm sure the supra's are the way to go. Other wise you will have to use a non Toyota MC.

yeah the rears are pretty small, but like i said most people have access to the ifs 4 cyl front calipers, so it makes it easier to assemble this setup.

I used a '92 2wd front single piston floating caliper on my rear upgrade (with custom fabbed brackets). Using the stock booster AND MC. retained the LSPV, and have plenty of stopping power and do not have to pump the brakes. Total pedal travel is less than half of the full swing. Braking can be felt almost immediately as the pedal is pressed, and quickly builds to the point that the wheels finally lock. It takes less pedal pressure now to lock the brakes than it used to, to just slow down.

Oh, and I also replaced the axle bearings when I did mine. That probably helped by reducing the runout of the axle, so it doesn't push the piston in between uses.
