22R exhaust manifold studs
« on: Mar 03, 2009, 04:36:25 PM »

What size are the exhaust manifold bolts, on 82 22r motor ? I need to helicoil a couple of them I called
Toyota in my area, and they did not know. I have a header leak.

I was going to make a brace from the motor or bellhousing to help support, the header from any flex in the
future.

Any ideas or suggestions while I'm doing the work?

not sure about the stud size, but if i remember correctly, there should be a stock support from the header to the bell housing...Maybe yours just needs replacing and not a custom fabbed one

Give LC engineering a call, they have information on size and thread pitch.

Vince if you're talking about a stock exhaust "header" or downpipe, I have the stock support bracket that bolts to the bellhousing off my 83, let me know if you want it

I used threaded inserts for a 3/8" stud.

The stud is slightly smaller, but it shouldn't matter.

The advantage is that threaded inserts are stronger than helicoils when going into aluminum, and less likely to pull out.    The SAE sized threaded inserts are also lots cheaper than helicoils or even metric threaded inserts, and use common tap sizes.

I think the OD of the threaded insert I used was 1/2x13  ID 3/8x16.

The drill size for the 1/2x13 tap is just slightly larger than 10mm, so it's easy to drill out the hole, and tap it...........

Check for manifold warpage, and get it surfaced flat if it is warped.

BTW, I tried to cheap out and replace 1 broken stud, with a trial fitting after the 1 stud replacement another stud broke, so at that point I replaced them all.........
