Factory solid axle Tacoma
« on: Jan 12, 2009, 08:47:15 PM »
This is old news but Im jazzed up about this. Apparently the axle is out of a Land Cruiser and it was built by TRD or something like that. Its a 4cylinder and a manual shift transfercase. Since no one seems to be developing an SAS kit yet, I sure hope Toyota or TRD will at least market this as a kit.

I had a 05 fourdoor 4x4    loved it       I do wish Toyota would offer a small rugged straight axle truck again, oh well, at least the old ones are still around to rebuild

yup, that's an 80 series landcruiser axle.  they even used the landcruiser suspension on it.  and i think it's a 4 cylinder 5 speed.  that's what gives it the SR5 designation.

however, don't count of toyota offering this as a kit.  that'll happen when they start offering toyota diesels again.

If they would offer something like this in the states, there would be one in the driveway next to the cruiser.

so....why does or did toyota manufacture solid axle trucks in foreign countries for many years after 86? I understand the emissions thing and that "the american buyer wants a smooth ride", they must have been cheaper for them to make, since I see them in 3rd world countries or are they preferred there for their stoutness? anyway I really dig the 3rd gen crewcab solid axled truck straight from toyota.

Oh man - I'd buy it - shoot, I'd sell body parts to get in line at it first.

With Jeep evidently going down in flames with Chrysler, there's just nothing new available for real off-roading.  There's a huge pent up demand for exactly this truck.

From what I've read International is going to pick up the jeep line. Which means no more crossovers, solid axles in the entire line up, and turbo diesel options too.

wow....I have a 2001 Taco with the IFS...and I am looking more and more at doing an SAS of some sort. I like the idea of using the 80 series stuff as it has the right width and the birfs are pretty massive.  I hope somebody does come out with a kit.....maybe even a drive-in/drive-out service.

w/ the 80 front axle, the diff drop is on the wrong side for a taco.  You'd have to get a different T-Case to run it.

or flip the housing, a friend of mine did that for his 85 axle on a tacoma

it's more involved than just flipping the housing.  You have to keep the 3rd going the same way which means welding up the stud holes for the third and redrilling them upside down, and also cutting off the knuckles and reweld them to the opposite side upside down.  If you just flip it over, the front axle would turn in reverse when you engaged it, and the steering would be all f'ed up.

it'd be alot easier to just get a right side drop t-case.

hmm...I guess that would be an excuse to get rid of the left drop chain driven case. Ditch the case...get an adapter...probably get a single gear driven case with the 4.0 gearset and that should be about all the gearing I need for this auto. I would like the dual case option with 2.28 gearing in both but I am concerned that it will have alot of rattling noises like some have reported. In a DD that is quiet inside, that would bother me.

Stout and Reliable. If you look at Toyota models around the world from the 60s to the late 90s, they really did not change that much. Cosmetic changes here and there, drivechange changes here and there, but the overall idea, or theme, largely remains the same. Same with the parts and designs. I can't find the statistics now, but in the United States, you are at the most less than 50 square miles (I believe it to be much less than that) from a paved road at the most REMOTE locations in the country, and I believe they are all in Alaska.

When you travel to other parts of the world, you may find yourself in incredibly remote areas. Going to Napa to find spare parts is not an option. AAA doesnt exist. You may be 100 miles from the nearest actual settlement. Parts need to be interchangeable or common enough that the BumF*ck Egypt gas station has the fan belt or alternator for you. It probably did save Toyota a LOT of money not needing to change their vehicles for every other year to satisfy the average ADD American auto consumer, but it also made sense... the rest of the world did not demand constant revision or "new" features to keep them interested. They needed vehicles that would take them there and back again, no matter what happened. When your life depends on your vehicle getting you home alive, heated seats, satellite radio, back up cameras and auto-parallel parking features aren't worth anything.

Its for these same reasons we will never see that prototype SA Tacoma hit the showroom floor. The off road industry and community is massive and constantly getting larger. BUT, the American automobile market is much, much greater. Even out of say, 1 million offroaders, how many would actually buy a brand new, SA Taco? I can guess not nearly enough to make it worth Toyota's while. Look at the FJ. It was marketed as a Rubicon killer offroad geared SUV. But I maybe see a handfull out of every 100+ that I see driving around actually built or geared towards actually wheeling. Just like the Dodge Powerwagon. I think they are BAD ASS but I see them very rarely and as far as I know, their production run was only a year or two. The market here just does not cater to people like us. The US market is all about cars that take the intelligence, logic, and skill out of driving. I saw a commercial for a car (want to say BMW) that will actually SLOW YOU DOWN when you come up on another car without ANY user input. Then when that car moves, it will accelerate you back up again. Then there are the cars that will parallel park for you. We (I use that loosely as I know many people can actually think outside the box here) are just too damn spoiled for our own good. It reflects on all aspects of our society. Auto manufactures need to sell cars to stay alive, and that means producing what the public wants. That ends up being the last thing any of us would want. Sad, but true.  :shake:

It was in the March or April issue of Petersen's if I remember correctly. I imagine it was mostly speculation but who knows?
