22re knock
« on: Nov 02, 2008, 10:49:53 PM »
I've got a 94 truck with a 88 or 89 long block that i installed used about two years ago, never had any problems with it. but for the last six months or so it has been knocking while its cold, only with throttle. untill it worms up a bit then it sounds ok, (after its worm theres some minor tapping, hard to hear over the tires ).

My question is dose this sound like something major, or somthing that can be fixed cheap?  I know its hard to say with out hearing it but its seems to be getting a little bit worse since I started daily driving it.

If I can record it I will try to post it on here so you can hear it.

Thanks in advance!!

sounds like a rod bearing.
replace them before they get any worse.

Do you know how many miles were on the engine before you installed it? If the person before didn't change the oil then you end up with a film on the rod & main bearings. Then when you change the oil the detergents clean this film off causing rod & main bearing failure. You can try rolling in a new set of rod & mains, just hope that the crank hasn't been damaged. You might want to try an engine flush then replacing the bearings.

depends...... if its a rod knock, you shouldnt be driving it.....

22r engiens however are notorius for being loud engines, with nothing wrong at all..... without being there, there really is no way to tell what it is....

could be valves, could be piston, rods, bearings, crank issues...... could be almost anything

If it sounds like a diesel until it warms up, it's probably just piston slap.

when its worming up its cool untill I give it gas than it knocks a little. once its worm I dont hear it anymore, just a small amount of tapping.  it has about 150,000 on it.

can I just buy stock size's and put them in?  sorry I never replaced them before.

You can but if someone had the crank ground you will end up installing oversize bearings.

pull a compression check,  and pull the valve cover and see if you have a valve adjuster loose

what weight of oil are you using??

The noise after it is warmed up and the knock goes away could be the injectors. Toyota's are known for very noisy injectors as they get older. The bottom end knock bothers me, I'd be worried about the rod bearings. Also a bent rod on a Toyota can sound like a lifter tick on a V8 if it isn't bent too bad.

I dont know if its bottom end or top, but its loud untill its worm. I need another set of ears to listen wile I drive around (notice it more wile driving rather thatn just sitting and reving it )  after its worm it seems fine. I drive this truck 45 miles each way every day, 90 miles a day, so I need to figure this out rather quickly.

hold the rpms at 2500 if it gets worse then its more than like the rods.
but like someone already stated the 22rs 22res are nitorious for being loud motors.
try adjusting the valves, Im sure they need it either way
good luck

Mine also has very VERY noisy lifters and injectors which sound the same.  I've given up trying to figure out where all the noises come from - lol.  I just drive it gently till it's warmed up and don't get it over 4K rpm.  It's gone close to 100K this way, according to the previous owner.  When it gets worse I'll yank the head and rebuild it.

Note - if it's an oil pressure problem and lack of lubrication, it also could sound like garbage when it's first started.  Mine makes noise when it's first started unless I slightly overfill the oil(maybe 1/4-1/2 a quart extra).  I suspect that my old oil pump isn't pushing nearly as much oil as it did when it was new and it's taking a couple of miles to get the oil properly flowing to the valves and lifters.
