Wampum's 85 EFI (Sold)
« on: Oct 02, 2008, 11:57:16 PM »
So here I got a 1985 EFI SR5 Xtra Cab Short Bed Pickup  :pimp: . This things fully loaded, but it's pretty rough, and it's got over 300,000 miles on it. The motor is supposedly rebuilt with 50,000 on it. It sits on some kind of 33's and its got a detroit "soft" locker in the rear. Its got 2" blocks in the rear and a 2" body lift. Anyway, this is my first build-up and first build-up thread. Any advice or criticism is welcome.

Let's just say it needs a little attention. To-do list:
-Put new bearings and seals up front
-Discover and solve its shudder problem
-Plate up some cracks in the frame
-Do away with the  :stopit:  shocks it has
-Eliminate the cat pee stench  :hammer: (had the doors off over summer)

So I collected an assortment of new/used parts, and I'm gonna give this pile a little love. As of now I am:
-Putting new bearings and seals up front
-Upgrading to vented rotors and V6 calipers (I also have a FJ80 brake master cylinder that I'm probably gonna throw on)
-Installing All-Pro's Hysteer kit
-Installing 4" marlins up front (got 2 inch blocks in the rear)
-Plating frame/ mounting IFS steering box
-Steam clean the seats or something
-clean/ get new battery cables

Once all that is done, I can start driving it again. Then I will:
-Throw my ifs v6 rear end in the back
-Acquire some bigger tires (35's to 38's)
-Install a stereo and my CB radio/antennae (need to fix my door locks first)
-(Maybe) Get sky's widening kit to match the new rear end
-Gears and Lockers
-Paint job (Possibly Orange)
-Shock hoops and better shocks
-Continue to fix stuff (clutch, shudder, whatnot)

I'll get some shots of my front end rebuild up here tomorrow.

lol, just a little joke. figured it might get some people's attention. it is a little misleading, though. someone probably wants to see that done. they will be disappointed when they realize it's just a goof.

Ehh, I figured some people would get a laugh out of it. Didn't want to cause any confusion though. I changed the title accordingly.

Well today I finished up getting both of the axle shafts out before it started to rain. (Maybe snow in the High Lakes?) But my steering arms are pretty frozen on there. There might be something I'm not doing right, but those things won't budge. Didn't really give it a good effort though, I was starting to get wet. I'm considering setting up a fort out there so I can work on it.  :camping:

Also, I got a question:  Will this FJ80 Brake Master cylinder work on my rig? It has the little cord that must be for Anti-Lock Brakes? Not sure. Let me know.

Cord goes to sensor and makes e-brake light go off when brake fluid is low right?
Bobbed 84 xtra cab, pickin up parts as I go.

If at first you do not succeed, put it in 4low and try again.

well i'm not sure how the e-brake works on an FJ80, but on my truck, there is a little button or something that the e-brake handle hits when you push it in.
on the FJ80 MC that marlin sells (below) it shows that there is no cord. I got mine from some other site (it was the cheapest one) and it had this cord. I just assumed it was for anti-lock brakes. hopefully it will still work on my rig.

Yeah that is all that little plug is for. It makes the ebrake light turn on while driving to let you know the brake fluid is low. The master cylinder I got from marlin didn't come with the plug and since I check all my fluids pretty much every time I get gas it was pointless anyway. Don't worry about it, it was just a "fancy" option in the 80s.

Nice rig, definitely a good start. I like the gray/black contrast, looks good.

Just ran outside and checked, my 84 has the cord coming off the cap. Youshould just be able to use your old cap on the new mc if you want.

OH, I see what you were saying about the e-brake and brake fluid now, I was a little confused before. Plus, good call on running the old cap, I'll do that.

I got that MC at JTOutfitters.com, here is a link:
http://www.jtoutfitters.com/-c-1199_1200_1266.html?osCsid=6gjcquuobpa56dpspgspdtb4o1
i believe i bought the cheapest of those. little bit cheaper than marlin offers, but if i remember right it took a longggg time for it to arrive at my door.

Thanks for the interest everyone.
Everything's pretty wet today. I managed to split some wood and get my FJ40 in the messy shed rather than under a leaky tarp. So that's good news, doesn't really pertain to my build-up though. It's starting to clear up abit. I think I'll head out and see if I can't get my knuckles and steering off.
