jd2 bender (update)
« on: Sep 19, 2008, 08:11:02 PM »
I've had this bender for a couple of years built one bumper but never really had a good way to mount it and couldnt justify spending a grand to go hydro until i found this kit from copperheadfab cost around $70.00 and uses a harbor freight long ram 6ton air jack another $70.00 on sale built a stand used 2x4x3/16 rectangle tube that used to be my front bumper got some cheap casters and painted chevy engine orange here she is pretty good  for the price.

I have $150 or so in the air over hydro setup bracket  kit and ram. the stand was pretty much free all scrap i had laying around. the bender its self was like $350 couple years ago not including dyes.

How does the stand work? I just converted my JD2 with the same kit from copperhead and I'm looking for ideas on a stand. I was wondering if it felt like it would tip over if you have a long piece of tubing hanging out of the bender?

Also, is your ram hard to push back in by hand once it it extended?

the stand seems pretty sturdy i haven't had a long piece of tube on it yet but i tried to rock it side to side and it really doesn't move to much its pretty heavy and having the die stored down low helps too.  the ram was fairly easy to push back in when i first finished it but i flipped the curved piece over that the ram pushes on to make it easier to re pin and after that it was hard to push back in I'm gonna leave it the way it is and get a heavy spring to help it.

Thanks. I like the looks of your stand. I'll probably do something similar.

I also thought about the return spring as well. I wonder if a trampoline spring would be enough to return the ram? Maybe an old ford hood spring?  Any other ideas for a big spring?

One more thing, did you have to open up all the holes in the brackets to mount the ram?  I wasn't really impressed with the quality of the copperhead fab bracket kit. The plates were cut with a CNC plasma and all the holes were too small. We had to open up every hole with a die grinder to get all the bolts to fit. They needed to open up all the holes about .030" and it would have been fine. They also had some massive burrs around the edges, but I guess for the price it was worth the $.

ya i had to open up the holes on my kit also even the big hole support that goes around the front of the cylinder. i was thinking maybe a garage door spring for the old style tilt panel type door.

Used the bender with 1.5 inch tube for the first time and it was pretty shitty the stroke wasnt right i couldnt re pin the die the ram wouldnt push the bender arm far enough and when you pushed the arm back to re pin i couldnt get the pin in thru the arm and die had to use a smaller diameter punch thru the holes to bend the tube a couple more degrees then pin with the heavy pin the whole deal was a pain. the solution get rid of the coupler from the ram to the bender arm (part with the arrow in the pic) drill hole in the arm to 5/8 and use a grade 8 bolt. Changed the geometry of the whole set up more then enough to re pin and moved the ram away from the tube hanging out of the die.
