Steve's 85 Xtra Cab Re-Redone Front Suspension... Sorta
« on: Aug 28, 2008, 01:17:50 AM »
Well this is my first post and my truck certainly isn't the most awesome. So dont make too much fun of me. lol here it goes :rockingout:

Was my grandpas as a kid, then my older brothers. He trashed it and gave it to me at 18. I thought YAY! 4wheel drive and didnt know a damn thing. I have been working on it for four years now (used to be my daily driver). But high school and college doesnt leave too much room for extra money, so it is coming along SLOW!   :wall:

I am currently working on the motor just to keep it going until I can afford to do something about it. I have heard so may ideas from v8's to chevy 4.3s to supra motors, to 20r heads. i dunno i might just get a rebuilt 22r and be done with it. any ideas?

It has 32" x 11.5" BFG All terrains strapped to Downey 3 inch springs (they arent that great), and some beat up Bilstien 5100s. Some custom front bumper work and some aux lights. Had a nice sound system but it got stolen and they left the truck haha. I love this thing and one day i hope for it to be a great trail rig.

Back in the day all covered in snow

My buddy and I, the first time I took it wheeling. I had 31s and some WAY too long shackles to get some clearance with my frowning springs

Notice the "Death Trap" decal on my windshield

At Gorman in Southern California. Put the shell on for campin

Common I had NOTHING else to test my new springs out on gimme a break.  :dunno:

Funny thing was it snowed the night before

Dry lakebed after a dust storm

Pismo Beach and my buddy

Welded up the front bumper

With lights and 32 inch tires

My girlfriend actually likes it! Shes a keeper

And thats where im at. Im green with envy at some of your guys trucks   :bounce:

truck looks good :) i like the second gen trucks w/ xcabs

do you have the 22r or the 22re?

i personally liek the 22r i have, everyone says go 22re or bigger, but i don't see the need, my truck moves around pretty good, i can still pull @ 90 mph on the freeway, and that's faster than i need to be going anyways

22re. I can barley get it to go 70 on the freeway. I think the motor is just tired. Long story short, when my brother owned it, he got it stuck in the mud and the engine sucked in water. When I got it i was naive enough to think i could rebuild it at my friends fathers garage in a weekend. haha. That was a disaster. It was my daily driver and i had to get to work so I went to a salvage yard, bought a used 22r and had some shady character put it in. God i wish i hadnt done that lol. I wanna do a fresh start and have my homework done the second time around.

I just took the intake manifold off to clean all the filth. It was gummed up bad. And what started as a small project just got big and expensive (relatively). I almost have it back together but i have a couple of electrical connectors with no home  :smack:

so its fuel injected still or not? you said it has a 22re but you put a 22r with a carb in it?

i too have a junkyard engine, i've persoanlly put this engine into 2 of my toyota trucks..... i blew the engine that was in my 85 2wd, so i went and got this engine for that.... a couple years later i rolled that truck, so i got an 84 4x4 xcab without an engine, and just put the engine into that one.... been driving it for about 2500 miles now.....

Future plans include:

Rebuild the motor
LC Engineering Performance Head??
Install the 4" trail gear springs sitting in my garage (i dont have a big enough welder to zap the spring hanger on)
Put new shocks on all around (bilstiens again maybe?)
New high clearance rear bumper (the old one scrapes the ground. luckily i havent high centered on the bumper yet)
rock sliders (maybe, i might go with high clearance running boards. people complain about getting in and out)
lockers (im not sure what path to go on this one. i still want it to have manners on the street)
regear the diffs
new body panels, paint, some interior work, stereo (for the lady)
roll bar??
I dont like playing on the rocks so i am debating whether i should get a crawl case or not
33" tires
stuff.....

you should get lockers, the aussie is pretty good with street manners as well as the powertrax no slip, you could always retrofit e-lockers than you would have fully selectable, open diffs for street, and spools on demand when you need it.....

you can make the sliders stick out enough to use as a step, otherwise leave the running boards off, they are useless.....

if you don't plan on rocks, then you don't need double low or any of that stuff, i'd keep it a good reliable, stock type rig....

i may do 4.7s in a single case eventually, but i don't plan on more than 33s or 35s.... so i know what i'm going to do will be fine, i do want a welded rear and a locker up front though

Do you plan on driving it on the street? Or do you plan on just keeping it a trail rig? I have heard that welded diffs can be harsh on the street and although it makes complete sense, Ive never tried it. I dont have anything to tow with, and plus i like "taking the truck out" for a sunday drive  :smokin:

fortysixandtwo aka Nick, on here... sold me his Aussie Locker, because he got used to his welded rear and how it drives...
and said it wasnt much different, besides the differeniating part.

good luck with your project.

Im thinking about the detroit no slips on front and back. I think that would be more than enough for what i want to do. The goal is to restore it, and have a nice weekend trail truck at the same time. I dont want to bob it, chop it or destroy it on the trail. Too much sentimental value. Besides i think the stock body sitting on some 33s looks REALLY nice. But thats just me

an aussie is more like an LSD on the street as is unlocks on the street (designed to)
a welded rear... cant do that obviously

Yeah sure did. It looked nice and thats what sold me. But I already had my dirt toy and what I wanted was a daily driver. That truck was a salvaged junkyard rebuild that I bought off some body shop. They didnt do that good of a job mechanically and the price to keep it running was climbing fast. But yeah, it sure looked nice. The only thing I really regret is that I never drove it around with the top off.  :shakehead:

No offense because I had an 86 that had the same interior and exterior color combo but whoever at toyota gave the go ahead to put :pokinit: brown interior into these things should be slapped a few times.
YOU ONLY NEED TWO TOOLS IN LIFE - WD-40 AND DUCT TAPE. IF IT DOESN'T MOVE
AND SHOULD, USE THE WD-40. IF IT SHOULDN'T MOVE AND DOES, USE THE DUCT TAPE.

IF YOU CAN'T FIX IT WITH A HAMMER, YOU HAVE AN ELECTRICAL PROBLEM.

I was wondering if anyone had some welding tips for me. I have a set of 4" trail gear springs that i want to put on. The only thing is i have a small 120volt Lincoln mig welder. Is that strong enough for mounting the front spring hangar? Because if it isnt, then i have to take it to a shop which means more $$$

Whats the AMPs of the welder. Mine a 120 volt too, but the AMPs go up to 140. My freind and I have built a truck with a welder that only went to 110amps and it held.
