85 runner

« on: July 26, 2004, 02:45:57 PM »

I am about ready to start buying parts for the build up of my 85 $runner. The question I have is how high is to high and how high is just right. IT WILL BE AN OFFROAD RIG ONLY! I was thinking of 6" Aor orbit eye springs w/ orbit eye in both end of front and rear w/ the axle pin 2.5" forward in front and 1.5" back in the rear, 1" lift shackle in front and 1.5" in the rear w/ 2 or 3" body lift on 37's. Any suggestion w/justification would be very helpful

Wow that would be freaking huge!  Id do those springs but in a 3" version and use maybe a 1" body lift.

I gained my clearance by cramming the transfercases inside to use like an arm rest.

Kansas, Flexin on cowpatties

« Reply #11 on: December 17, 2004, 03:37:39 AM »

I think with 6" of lift and any type of bodylift is too much.  I am running a 5" All-Pro lift and 37" tires and I had no rubbing really.

I would lightly touch the rear fenders a little, I trimmed em up a bit and that was it.  My front never rubbed.

Now, you may see my rig and ask, then if you didnt rub, why cut the fenders out so much.  I did it due to body damage from flopping over and slamming into and draggin past rocks.

I will tell you this, being too tall is what I think caused me to flop 3 times.  I was too tall at 5 inches.  Well...........................It may be because I didnt care too much if I flopped and did damage but I was very top heavy with a 4-Runner and very tippy with a softer type suspension.

Now that I have wheeled it a lot and taken a leaf out inthe back, It flexes much better and I am not as top heavy as I got rid of my hard top and doors and about 20 something inches of bed on the back of my Runner.

Oh yeah, If your not affraid to trim out fenders and move your front axle forward 2-3 inches and your rear axle back a couple inches, you could run a 3-4 inch lift and 37's.  You must not be affraid of the sawzall though.   I Dunno...  Beer

My front axle will be 3" forward and I would like to keep the triming to a minimum thats why I went with the 35"s

I run 38's and I have 5" of lift front/rear and I had to cut the hell out of the frenders. My fire wall is all the way back to the body mount and I still rub, and my springs are moved 2" forward. I cut the inside fender wells out in the rear and they rub every so often.

I'm not sure exactly what your asking however if you are talking about the orange hose it is a hose I made with parts from the hardware store and it leads to the air manifold on the firewall, where the soloneiods(sp?) for the arb's are also. If you want I can take an updated pic and post it.
