Dann 44/ Toyota Hybrid Questions
« on: Jun 22, 2008, 10:16:01 AM »
I have a 1/2 ton dana 44 that im putting the c's and knuckles on my toy front housing to make a hybrid front end with open knuckles. The idea is to have a custom set of chromo axles made to fit the purpose. I was wondering if anyone had any insight on how to put the 44 inner c's on the housing or could point me in the right direction. Thanks for the help.

tired of dealing with broked birfs and its something different. Chromo 44's are going to be plenty strong for the type of wheelin i do not so much rocks but alot of trails and i hate having to spend and hour fixing a broken birf on the trail just to go home with an open knuckle rig i can just unlock the hub and drive home.

seriously though... instead of trying to do this, why not just run the 44? If you really want an open knuckle axle, just build the 44 (or I would prefer something larger like a 60). But you already have a 44, so just build it. RCT has a 44 front under his truck.

just get a birf eliminator kit.  it uses a D44 chromo shaft and u joint.  a toyota and D44 shaft are so similar in size that all that is needed to run a D44 shaft in the toy housing is a different pitch on the splining, hell they are even both 30 spl. inners. as for the outter shaft all they do is spline it to 30 for the toy hub instead of 19 for the D44.

Chromo 44's are going to be plenty strong for the type of wheelin i do not so much rocks but alot of trails and i hate having to spend and hour fixing a broken birf on the trail

problem solved since a chromo D44 shaft ( birf eliminator kit) will be strong enough for you (although a 30spl birf has been tested to be stronger and cheaper) you will never have to do a trail fix again on your toyota axle running D44 shafts inside it.

just remember that a regular u-joint inner will bind before a birfield joint will.

What if you do break those birf eliminators?  Think you're going to be able to find a spare or a replacement in a junk yard?

I agree.

Just put in a D44 instead of running a toy/d44. Once you put in d44 shafts on the toy axle you will most likely start breaking the ring gear.

The toyota shafts are partly what made me decide to run the toyota front. I laid a toyota shaft and a scout dana 44 shaft side by side and the toyota stock toyota shafts made the dana stuff look weak. If only I had known how weak stock birfs were I might have went with the dana stuff instead. Now I have long 30 spline superaxles and I couldnt be happier........well a 35 spline narrowed, dana 60 would be SWEEET.

For what I have invested I'm satified atleast.

yet the 44 still turns sharper than a toy axle.

you might be surprised on how strong a cromo 44 is compared to a cromo 30 spline longfield.  my buddy has a toy/44 hybrid and breaks a shaft every other trip guranteed.  was breaking the hubs, he then put slugs in and now he is breaking the shafts.  stick with the 30 splines.

Would not want to bet on that would you. This was a better made kit then the one that Randy's sells. When I broke the DS it took out the U-joint on the PS along with the hub and R & P. Forget the 44 stuff and just get 30-spline Long and hub gears and go off wheeling.

I am still running one of the very first redline birf eliminator sets. I run 33" tires and am easy on the pedal. That said I think you are better off going with the longs, they are a stronger product hands down.

first question. you say your tired of breaking birfs. what birfs, stock ones? kick down some money and buy the 27s or 30 spline longs and be done with it. will be way fast, way more affordable and you will be out on the trail a lot faster then doing all this custom stuff. think about this to, IF you DO break, your going to have so much of a custom part no one can go "here you go" throw this stock birf in there so you can get off the trail.

I went with 30 spline longs and started blowing up diffs, took 3 sets to convince me to toss the toy axle completely and go with a 60.  Either dump alot of money in the toy axle, or dump alot of money in a 44.

That is what mine was with high alloy axles. I ran it for five years and I was not always real easy on it. Then one day it just could not take it anymore.  :gap:

Yep, I break one & I cannot find a replacement. At least with longs you can carry a stock birf with you & toss it in on the trail to get you out.

Thanks for all the info guys i did alot more research and pricing and the 30 spline longs and hub gears will be cheaper and easier to do than my toy/d44. I just thought something different would be cool but facts dont lie. Im putting a Fuel injected 302 into my toy so i wanted to make sure the strength would be there with the 30 spliners. Thanks again for the input.

You fail. These pics are from this year and he has a closed knuckle toy front end still

This is what really impressed me about wheeling with Marlin.  I was right in front of him on Jack Hammer at the 08 TinBender Jambo.  I even got to spot him a couple of times.  (that's me in the second pic!)  He was slow and steady the whole time.  Very technical, awesome driving.  Its hard to get a spectacular pic of him because he is never doing anything crazy!
