*Project Caribbean TurboCrawler* ('86 4runner)
« on: Jan 25, 2008, 01:44:57 PM »
This is going to be fun.......and I need tons of tech advice.

I decided to start my thread to keep up with TurboCrawler since we both have 86 factory turbo runners that we are swapping 5 speeds into.....here is a quote from my post on his thread...."just got the front and rear 3rds back with a detroit in the V6 Rear and an Aussie in the front............I need a drivers side fender and maybe a new door....I bought the truck with a blown turbo...swapped in the TEC upgrade and took it on the trail with street tires it got unstuck out of a gnarly hole but the strong turbo pretty much toasted the crap Auto trans........I found an old W56 and have remove auto and began cut up of all IFS crap upfront......I found this truck for a decent price and it has virtualy zero rust which is pretty impossible in the Caribbean."

if the turbo fried a auto trans, i would look into running an r151f

the w56 is good, but not as good as teh r151f

The R151F 5 speed came in the turbo. It is the strongest tranny Toyota made for the 4 cylinder. The R150F was in the V6. Same tranny, but the bellhousing is different and it uses a gay chain driven case. Both are 23 spline. Let see some pictures.   P.S. my 4runner wasnt factory turbo. The xtra cab truck I started with was. Im making my 86 runner into a turbo on top of all the drivetrain upgrades. :smoke:

Yes you can. you need the bellhousing from the turbo tranny. The R151 is the same a V6 tranny but  has a gear driven case.
